New here, after lurking (and thoroughly enjoying) the site for the past few weeks. I'm just getting back into astronomy after many years away...and became the proud owner, last week, of a Coulter Odyssey 8 (circa '87-'89) found on SF bay area craigslist for $75. Seems to be in good shape (even decently collimated) but the mirror is coated with dirt. Trying to decide if I should clean it first or just get re-coated. Views through it seem pretty damned good.
Also, I've been wanting to ask if anyone saw that 1969 blue & white C-8 being offered for free a couple of weeks ago on NYC craigslist? It had been stored for 15 years and fungus (or something) had severely rotted the paint and there appeared to be damage on the corrector plate too. Still, a thing of beauty. No mount, but looked like a 70mm finder. I tried to convince him to ship it to me, but unsurprisingly no luck.
Sorry if this first post is a little OT. Here's a Criterion Dynamax 8-inch on ebay I don't think has been mentioned yet:

Hi terrapin and welcome to CN! Might as well try cleaning it first - sometimes that's all they need. If it doesn't help then no harm done and you can have it re-coated. And don't worry about your post being a little OT - you brought it back around with the link to the Criterion Dynamax . Again, welcome!

Thanks. Good to be here. I spent the past month pouring over craigslist and ebay looking for a cheap dob and in the process developed quite an interest in classic scopes. Craigslist has really opened up the potential for some amazing finds...wish it was there 20 years ago.
Here's a "classic". A classic toy, anyway:
Operation Skysight
(I'm not the seller.)
Looks fun to play with, but not for $90.

Thanks for the link!
I also would try to clean the mirror. Just take your time and use VERY light pressure. If there are dirt particles on it, just try to soak them off. If you can get the mirror off, I often clean optics and diagonal parts in Dawn dishwashing detergent in the sink (like doing dishes )

Don't feel bad. I was the first to contact him half hour after he listed it. I tried everything. He had his heart set on giving it to a science teacher.
Glad you decided to join us here at CN. You may want to try cleaning that mirror first and see what you have under there. Congrats on the scope.

While browsing the advertisements for the Detroit, Michigan Craigslist, I happened to notice a listing for a vintage Unitron #114 2.4-inch F/15 alt-azimuth refractor telescope. There are four photographs of the seller's Unitron telescope. The ad was posted on March 15th, 2009, and the link to the website is:
http://detroit.craigslist.org/for/1076469493.html (I am not the seller of the telescope.)
A guess as to the age of this collectable would be the 1960s or early '70s. Any other opinions on its year of manufacture?

Nifty viewfinder brackets! This style is found on some of Royal Astro's better refractors.
Comments? Is this in fact a classic Sears, Roebuck & Co. achromatic refractor?

While browsing the advertisements for the Denver Craigslist, I happened to notice a listing for a Vixen (d=102mm f=1000mm) optical tube assembly. The ad was posted on March 11th, 2009, and the link to the website is:
http://denver.craigslist.org/sys/1070858403.html (I am not the seller of the telescope.)
Is this model still being marketed by Orion Telescopes and other companies, or is it now out of production? Is the telescope featured in the Craigslist ad an achromatic or apochromatic refractor? How can one tell the difference between the two optical types if you cannot see the label?

Is this a circa late 1970s/early 80s Meade Research Grade 12.5-inch F/6 optical tube assembly? Or a photograph of a smaller 10-inch F/6 model? Too bad the seller pictured in the image didn't give his height! The interesting advertisement is found on the Inland Empire (of California) Craigslist classifieds. The link for the post is:

A large D & G Optical 6-inch F/12 complete equatorial refractor system on the Hawaii Craigslist. The advertisement was posted on March 9th, 2009, and the link to the website is:
http://honolulu.craigslist.org/big/for/1067779723.html (I am not the seller of the telescope, but a trip to Hawaii sounds nice.)
Is D & G still making these 6-inch F/12 optical tube assemblies? I had the chance to look through one a few years back at a local star party and was very impressed by the optical quality.

I would't call the Hawaii D&G a classic or "vintage" yet. The 6" f/12 is an awe inspiring scope. It is available from D&G currently and if you happen to be in Hawaii this scope appears to be a great value. I can tell you I wouldn't dream of selling my OTA for 1,500.00. It is a great price depending on condition of course.

New guy here!
Kind of crazy, but I joined the forums to get info on this exact scope. I've already contacted the seller. I'm new to everything relating to telescopes and had set myself a $500 limit. Is this telescope any good? Can I find a replacement for the hand unit fairly easily? Sorry if this was posted in the wrong thread.

Replacement parts would probably be extremely difficult to get. Celestron is not obligated to have them. Most C-8s have suitable optics with an occasional kludge here and there. There's no way to tell without looking at/through them.

I think the hand paddle is only necessary for fast/slow electric motions for guiding photos, check to see if the drive runs without it and it'd be fine as a visual scope. Alternately, check the Astronomics and Company 7 websites for a scanned Powerstar Manual, and Astro Parts Outlet usually can supply missing stuff as well.

On the Powerstar, it will NOT run without the hand unit. I had one recently and had a devil of a time getting the HC to work. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.
Also, I advertised for a replacement both here and on Astromart with no luck.
I doubt things have changed for the better in that regard.
(I no longer have the Powerstar).

The Vixen Polaris mount alone is probably worth $150 or so depending on condition. What's a 4.5" Japanese (Vixen?) OTA worth?
Plus, I've rarely met a Craigslist seller who wasn't willing to come down on his/her asking price.
If I was close, I'd look into it.

There is a Royal of Tokyo Model R74 Telescope in Wood Case at the Goodwill site: http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem.asp?ItemID=4601957. The ad says local pickup only but maybe something can be worked out.
I got all excited about this but I noticed that the mount looked more like the one on my 60mm Tasco 7 TE-5 than on the 75mm's I have seen. Sure enough, on the picture of the focuser the partial label indicates it is a MIZAR product with glass by Hino Optical, and what's more it is a 60mm. scope. Ah so. The seller is not willing to ship but they suggested hiring a 3rd party packer to do that. If the scope stayed near the opening price it might be possible but does anyone have experiece doing this? How costly is it? I didn't think Mizar made top notch scopes but if it has Hino glass, it must be pretty good. Ponder Ponder. Hmmmmm. Glenn

I saw this and came to the same conclusion.
I even got additional photos from them. They did not have the focuser picture up at first - only after I asked for more detailed shots. If anyone would like them, send me a PM. I'd be glad to forward them over. It looks like the Royal manual somehow got into the box along the way. It's definitely a 60 - but at 1000mm focal length.

We are all so good, independenty performing our due diligence. I also had the entire photo shoot and at first was excited that it might be f/20. After studying Hiroki's, (Galakuma's)Mizar catalog Tuesday evening, I gave up that notion and accepted that the focal length was just 1000mm. Oh well. Glenn, last year I had UPS package and ship a few 76mm scopes w/wood cases for $75 each. Last week I arranged to have a 60/910 w/wood case packaged and shipped and was quoted $159. And this was only traveling about 500 miles, one half the distance of the other larger, heavier scopes. UPS also charges an additional $25 to pick up the package from the Goodwill. At least that was my experience last fall shipping from the Indiana Goodwill. The extra charges are significant.

I found out last week here in our area this. FedEx charges on average about 30% cheaper than UPS. I had a video camera sent in for repairs packaged at 21 pounds. UPS wanted $41 and be there on Thursday. FedEX wanted only $27 and be there on Wednesday. You've got to shop or you'll get it where the Sun don't shine! Mike

Hmmm, at least for the past two weeks that would be where I live! Good to know FEDEX is cheaper. I have used all three major carriers. I have used UPS for craigslist buys because they package/ship and are everywhere telescopes are. I don't know if FEDEX is affiliated with a package store where the whole job can be done. This service takes the burden off of the seller and sometimes makes an out of state sale possible. Another UPS advantage (for me at least) is the driver will leave even insured packages without a signature on my porch, whereas, the FEDEX driver won't, even when I leave a note. I have to drive a lot the wrong way from home, to pick it up from their warehouse. The UPS guy says he's been delivering in my neighborhood for 25 years and packages left on the porch have never gone missing. This doesn't exactly justify a 150% rate advantage over FEDEX however!

I am definately out of this chase. I am looking for the 76mm Tasco or a Royal Astro or another rebadged unit to keep my Tasco 7TE-5 company. That's IT. I don't need any other scope. I don't need more scopes, but---- 60mm f5 Comentron, 30 x 40 3 draw brass Unitron, 20-60 x 60 Tasco spotter, Russian 10 x 42 half binoc, have all mysteriously appeared stuffed into my rural mailbox and I understand a model 841 Swift Spotter is en route. HOW IS THIS HAPPENING???? If I don't get all this stuff I can buy eyepieces, mounts, a winch for my heavy observatory lower shutter --- all that good stuff I think I really need. But no, I keep growing junk and nicknacks.
My shrink, after a 10 minute evaluation claimed I have ADHD, but my counselor tells me that it is really Ausbergers syndrome. I don't know what it is, but I am really glad I can tell my wife that it's "'cause I have a condition." (wonder how long that will work?)
I think it is the lack of warm nights and clear skies that drives me to z'Bay and Craigslist. Ya right, Blame the almighty!
Well clear skies will come, will come, will come, ??? Glenn

Some recent research suggests that autism results from the over masculinization of the left hemisphere, but slight underdevelopment of the right (which controls social skills). Not really a 'condition' per se- really on a continuum. The opposite type of development produces very social people who can't tie their shoelaces, cross the street, or change a lightbulb on their own.

Hi All:
While scanning the web recently to feed my bad habit, I came across this interesting listing for a PARKS REFRACTOR ON EVILBAY - Is this for real?? I know Parks stuff can be pricey at times, but this takes the cake! Could this little 60mm refractor have ever really had a list price of $2K?!! It looks like most any generic cheapie 60mm with plastic knobs and the works -- or am I missing something? Cheers...

Amazing as it seems that's the price listed at the PARKS website
And that's $800 off the MSRP.
Can't imagine they sell many!
Is that a finder jammed into the diagonal?

I could never figure out that Parks ad and the one on EBay yeilded $400? These pop up now and then, used , for $70-$100. Parks must really be trying to target the ignorant if they're selling a 60mm acro for over a grand

Hmmm looks like he's selling it for someone else. I wonder if someone is trying to run a scam through him? His feedback of positive so I don't think he would try it. Obviously something's wrong. OTOH it the picture shows the actual scope, I'll gladly trade my $1500 Parks for it!

I'm not the seller, it just caught my eye. I asked him if he how he knew it was old and not a fake: He said:
Only because my Grandfather got it from his Grandfather when he was a boy. There is no documentation for the item only the story. So how old I have to guess, but that means nothing with out a document to support. I have looked for any markings to support where it come from or one similar, it looks like turn of the century probably isn't worth anything, but $125.00

I emailed the seller. He says it's a Mayflower and that he doesn't know what the diameter of the objective is.
Following the links to the Royal refractor catalogs, it looks like this one is most similar to the R-73 pic, though the OTA looks shorter, more like the 1200mm R-74.
What do you folks think? It's close enough I could probably pick it up on my way home. Is $150 reasonable? Or a bit large?

This is just me but, if the glass looks good yeah, I'd probably pay $150 for it. In fact I have a 22 rifle. It's a semi-auto though, and it's kinda hard fighting off rabid foxes and racoons with a telescope.

Don't know why my edit didn't show up. I looked up Robert Provin's Mayflower catalog, and this scope seems to match the #816, so it'd be a 76x1200. The seller is going to look in the box for the badge, and let me know what eyepieces are included.

I'd say it's worth $150 AND a trunkful of weapons. I have that same scope. Mine is Royal Astro (OTA exactly the same as a Tasco 10te) The mount and tripod are better, identical to the famous 7te5 Tasco. If you don't pick it up immediately...well, may I suggest you be shot? Growing up I remember Echo Park as a pretty tough part of L.A. With the light pollution and the crime rate, the rifle, unfortunately, may be more useful than the scope.

Well, shoot. The seller wants to trade it for a rifle. The scope was his grandfathers, vintage 1974. He wants to surprise him with a rifle, and said that I "don't qualify" because I don't have one.
Easy go, I suppose. Though I may try one more time...

I don't get it how much does your average 22 cost? If he's that stubborn I'd make a quick trip to WalMart.

Clint: You mean this particular seller thought his scope was 1906? Odd, since his grandfather bought it new in 1974!
Well, I'd sure hate to make a trip to Wal Mart and end up stuck with a 22 rifle when this dude changes his mind AGAIN.

It's not as easy as picking up a .22 in California. The gun maybe purchased by you, but it will remain your responsibility as the recorded owner until a legal Firearms Dealer transfers the ownership of the rifle. (Not free.)
California is really whacko with firearm regulations, and I'll bet the "trader" of the telescope doesn't realize the hassles of trading a firearm in the state of California.
If it was legit, sell it for cash, and purchase the firearm yourself.
Something seems fishy about this deal. Better agree on a CASH deal.

Caveman:
Regrettably, I don't have any Tinsley eyepieces to trade, but I'm curious about your Mayflowers, to give me an idea what I should offer (if not simply the $150 asking price) for this one in Echo Park. I like that 2 of yours are mint, and if you're really interested in parting with one, I'd be interested to hear what you believe it to be worth.
The Echo Park Mayflower isn't mint, so far as I can tell from the highly-compressed pictures he's got in his ad plus a couple he emailed me. And though he says there are "lenses in the box", I can't see any eyepices, unless they're in the barlow, focuser, diagonal in the pix....
Oh for cryin' out loud! I just opened the ad again to look at the pix to make sure I remember what I was talking about, and the seller has changed the price to $450.
I'm going to email him and say "no thanks."
Sheesh.

Well, wish me luck. I'm on my way to check it out. He said he just changed the ad to reflect what he paid for the scope originally. Guess he's hoping that a gun dude will think he needs to have something fancy to trade.
Here's to hoping it's complete and in twitchen' shape!

Hi All:
I saw a rather interesting collection of eyepieces, barlows, a unihex and some other bits on eBay - HERE - There's been 15 bids and it's up to $313 so far. I'm just wondering if there's something really special in the batch that has caught folks eyes? The Unihex isn't in the greatest shape, there's a couple Unitron eyepieces and a Galoc EP. Not sure what the big EP is? Anything else special in the lot? Cheers...

I've seen some of those Criterions go for $30-40 on 'Bay. Assuming each item has an auction value $30 average, you're looking at $1000 worth of stuff. An hour to go, wish I had the money!

I'd call or email and ask if the Circle-T design is on the nameplate. That would be a Towa made scope. These were nice reflectors sold under a number of brands like Tasco. If they can tell you what's on the plate we can go from there.

Thanks, David. Actually I was asking more out of curiosity (and to inform other folks) since the scope is on the other side of the country from me.
Meanwhile...somebody in San Diego needs to go pick up this old 6-inch reflector for $15!

I have an eyepiece that looks just like the one in the focuser of this Edmund Reflector. Except mine is 1/4" FL instead of 1/2". No other marks are on it and I often wondered who made it. I don't know why, but the seller has broken this telescope up into three separate auctions of optical tube, mount, and legs.
