My new 10te is 570327. For another number to record, there is one for sale on Astromart right now. It has serial number 970427 (which is quite close to Mike's #970311). It has square wood legs on the tripod.

Here are my two 7te5 serial numbers.

761356

961793 (edited)

I have edited this post. I had used the registration number on the case and not the serial number on the scope. I had put 57500 and realized that was the same number as Beth in Arkansas gave for hers. I had wondered how Preston knew it was a 7te5 by the serial number only! Now I know it wasn't a serial number! It's OK Preston... You still da man!

It seems the 10te scopes listed here (aside from a few anomalies, southern hemisphere what ev ) have 7-0, 7-1, 7-2, as the second and third digits in the serial number.
Of the 7te5 scopes listed, 60 - 62 are in the second and third numbers in the serial sequence. Do these numbers correspond to a likely date of manufacture?

I thought I had already contributed to this accumulation of Tasco/Royal Astro numbers. My 7te-5 has 861347 on the focuser plate. The wooden box has the styrofoam dividers and a l964 date on the manual.
Clear skies all. It's raining now here, but that will put the forest fires out so It will be clearer when the clouds go away.

Hey Darrell,
The Royal Astro I have is 90mm 1400mm, 990141. If you contact J. Siple or look for the Sears 90mm thread, there is a listing of all the Royal Astro Optical numbers for the Sears 90mm. Don't know if you want anything other than the Tascos. Rich

7TE = #862700

15TEA = #670161 (this is the rare pier mounted model)

And I have a focuser from a 7TE with #962159 on the label.

Not mine, but I'm considering it, and I don't know what it is - a 7TE, or a 7TE-5, or something else? - serial #'s are in the ad:

Sorry, I'm real late for this discussion. If anyone is still watching my serial numbers:

15TE = 771201
10TE = 271201
7TE-5 = 760986
Sears = 872399

The differences between the 10TE and 15TE is more than just the motor. The 15TE's tripod legs are significantly beefier, the clamps are one piece casts as opposed to the 10TE's stamped steel, and the center tray is about 50% larger.

Darrell,

If you are still keeping track... There was another thread discussing Royal Astro serial numbering as well, but I couldn't find it tonight. In that thread, it was suggested that the Royal Astro number sequence on the focuser label started with the year of production. A serial number starting in 5 would be 1965, a 9 would be 1969. There wasn't any accounting for say 1959 or 1969 or say 1960 or 1970. Both would be either 9 or 0. I have an old scope with the serial number 070180 and assumed it was from 1960.

There is currently a 10te on the Houston CL which the seller says was given to her husband in 1955 when he was seven. First I thought, wow lucky kid! Then I thought that is A LOT of telescope for a 2nd grader, but assuming the timeline is right and the scope is 1955 vintage... what are we supposed to make of its serial number 070106???

If you are still keeping the numbers for R. A. scopes current, I gave away my 570327 (Kaleen) 10te last month. Seemed like a good idea at the time

other Keith

Rod,

No, no, not my list, Darrell's list. Darrell, where are you?

Rod, what makes your scope a 15te besides the clock drive? Can you photograph the tripod triangular accessories tray, or at least tell me the dimensions and number of holes in it. Mine has spaces for 7 eyepieces not the 4 holes I had with another 10te scope. I just realized tonight I may have a 15te, and not a 10te after all. Tripod legs that the round part is 1 1/4" diameter not just 1 1/8? Can you confirm these differences? Mine did not come with the drive but perhaps that was lost decades ago. Thanks.

Perhaps this has already been discussed, but has anyone noticed that the second digit of the serial number seems to correlate with the aperture diameter?

Tasco 7TE-5 X6XXXX 60 mm
Tasco 10TE X7XXXX 76 mm
Tasco 15TE X7XXXX 76 mm
R. A. 90 mm X9XXXX
R. A. 108 mm X1XXXX

Or is it my imagination?

-Tom
