Craigslist, eBay and other vintage scope ads

This is a continuation of the previous thread, which is located here :

Previous ad thread

A few reminders :

1) do not post your own ads or the ads of your friends. This is considered sale promotion in the open forums and this is a violation of the CN TOS. Please post such ads in the S&S forum or the CNC.

2) do not post photos from ads unless you have the permission of the person who took the photo. If you must have some reference to the photo in the post, then post a link to the photo, not the photo itself.

3) do not post the entire ad text (or large blocks of it) without permission from the author.

4) try to concentrate on the item for sale and not the seller.

5) Buyer beware - there are some scams floating around, so do your homework before pursuing any ad.

6) CN is in no way responsible for the content of these linked ads.

Both the owner of the Cave is a wee bit off, me thinks! Off his rocker!

Those Jaegers lenses are very, very good! Also, there aren't too many out there to be had. I have had several and still have one and won't sell it unless I'm on the verge of living under a bridge! All things considered, that may not be too bad for an unused lens. Yes, D&G makes a very good lens. Quite comparable, really. Still, I'd put my Jaegers up against one of Barry's lenses any day. It would be a darned close contest, probably a tie. If one could get this lens for about $800.00 I'd jump on it. I'm just not in the market for it.

Steve, you are the Giant Lens Jaegers expert so this is a question for you and not a statement. Is there a difference between the old Jaegers, and the new stock Jaegers lens? Did any survive the fire? And the new stock lens are they from the original Japanese company they use to buy from or Chinese company? It would be nice to find out before buying, the ad says thr fire was 18yrs ago yet he says the lens is 15yrs-20yrs old and bought 13yrs ago from original owner, i am sure the lens is nice either way but is there a difference? I am not trying to shy anyone away from the lens i just want to protect all here from over spending. On the other hand if it is from before the fire it is a rare and great find. Basically ask questions and be sure of what you are purchasing.

I'd like to know the answer to that question, too. I've never seen a new Jaegers lens, and would love to hear if anyone has one or looked through one.

I have 3 6" Jaegers lenses. An f/5 that a late friend of mine built into a nice OTA; an f/10 that I built an OTA for about 10 years ago; and an f/15 that I have yet to complete an OTA for.

All three of these were alleged to be early 60's vintage. The f/10 has some discoloration on the coatings, but is a great visual planetary and visual/imaging DSO performer (it does great with planetary imaging if I shoot monochrome). The f/15 has a small chip at one edge. It's in a non-factory cell, and I suspect someone tightened the retaining ring too much. The chip is colored out with a black felt marker. I was told it's never been in a scope. It's very clean, too.

I just called the guy selling that 10" Cave. I asked him to put some pics of the scope on his ad. He said he is keeping the pier and legs, so that would just about be a deal breaker for me. Don't think i will find just a Cave pier and legs for sale anytime soon.

My only hope would be that pier and legs from my Meade Research grade mount would fit the Cave EQ- head. It's sure not worth $2k without the pier.

I don't know that something I lusted for in the early 80's qualifies for "Vintage" but it brought back memories of agonizing scope lust: "Still out of reach" when I was totally in awe of the high tech features like moto focus and digital setting circles. Image, A Scope that actually knew when you were pointing it wrong! Clear skies and hope to all

Pentax J860 on Goodwill new [Re: Starpoke]
      #3143066 - 06/03/09 06:36 AM

http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewitem.asp?itemID=4864759

From what I've learned in this forum, a very nice classic. But in looking closely at the photos in the ad, whoever repackaged the scope did a very poor job. Note especially that perhaps the finderscope stalk may be pressing against the unprotected(?) obective lens? And that the mount is not resting in its proper styrofoam hole; nor is the tube secured in its rings. I hate to think what might happen to this fine telescope if it is shipped the way it is currently repackaged. Perhaps this could be remedied by the seller before shipping; perhaps someone from CN in the Omaha area will snag it and pick it up. Can't bid on it myself, but I hope a CN member gets it and receives it in good shape.

Re: Pentax J860 on Goodwill new [Re: VanJan]
      #3143739 - 06/03/09 02:19 PM

I just returned from a 5-mile round trip to the Goodwill in Omaha. The scope is a Pentax J60. The mount is altazimuth. The optics are in excellent condition. The objective is capped and is air-spaced. Dewcap has a solar cap on it also. The crosshairs are intact but way off due to someones taking the eyepiece off of the finder. Comes with a mirrored diagonal, 25k, 12.5k and a 6or. Looks to me to be complete and in very clean condition. It's made in Japan so probably is a late 80's or early 90's. I don't know on the other hand where the later Pentaxes are made. Odd thing about this is that the foam is made for the J80 also. Therefore the finder and bracket doesn't fit where it looks like it should go. There is also a cutout for a poro prism but it is not there or listed in the manual. Maybe it was included in the J80 pkg. Legs and tray are like new. Little paint scuffing on the finder....par for the course with scopes like these. Metal tubing, threaded dewcap, plastic knobs, and maybe the finder's tailpiece. Eyepieces are very clean but aren't stamped Pentax. Box is in good shape, with a 5 page manual. If you are a Pentax collector it would be worth your consideration. Mike P.S. Also includes sun filter and at least 99% of the caps if not all. Serial #601347.

Darrell.....I just didn't feel like I need it. I have no use for an altazimuth scope. Maybe I don't get it about a Pentax value. If it were a 50's or 60's in a wood box. Maybe I'm nuts. Guess I have enough scopes that will do it for me. I'm not in this stuff to buy low and sell high either. Some are....I just don't look at it that way I guess. It's probably that I don't know enough about these items.= to appreciate them. Mike

Hey Mike,

Thanks for checking out MY scope so throughly! I caught that one last night and started the bidding, but I see I've already been outbid! sheesh, $45 doesn't buy much these days Kinda young for my taste anyway. Oh well, plenty of time to rethink this one.

My Meade Research grade mount should work fine with that Cave OTA.

If the glass looks clear and not cracked (other than some "real estate" that can be cleaned off), should make a nice little scope. I like that box, if I got it I probably would modify its interior, add some dividers, padding and such.

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.

Where to post ads for non-classic scopes? new [Re: Binary Star]
      #3153132 - 06/08/09 09:44 PM

Is there a general consensus about where to post ads for scopes that may be good deals, but aren't really classics? I seem to remember there being a post about this somewhere on the forums, but I couldn't find it.

I often see Craigslist ads that I know people would be interested in, but I don't know where to post them. An example is this ad for a a 10" Meade SN for $550.

http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/for/1210063335.html

I was going to put this is in the reflector or CAT forum, but I didn't know if that would be frowned upon.

I was always intrigued by those off-axis guider focusers. I wonder how well they worked? Probably better in the digital age with goto mods, I suspect.

Mayflower 80 / 1200 on eBay new [Re: terrapin]
      #3153221 - 06/08/09 10:44 PM

Hi All:

I don't recall seeing this one mentioned - a Mayflower 80mm / 1200FL on eBay - looks just like a Towa 339 -- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=220429712231

It's worth a look - seems to be in quite good shape from a quick glance, but it's kinda pricey ($199) if less than mint. Ciao!

If the 80 X 1200 circle T optics scopes are all they are said to be, the minimum bid is a steal IMHO. This one is only an hour north of me. Unfortunately the last 3 60 X 900 circle T scopes I've bought are optically so poor I wouldn't even think of selling them. I just haven't had too much luck with Towa I guess. But this IS an 80mm

Keith.....I don't believe Towa ever made a bad 80mm X 1200mm. However I do believe his starting point is too high. On a bad day I'd go no higher than $250. I had a good day and my Selsi clone I got for $78 and $36 shipping. I don't think anybody bid against me...if there was it was just one other person. But make no mistake the optics are superbo! Mike

Mike,

I've certainly heard a lot of good things about the 80 X 1200. Last week there was a TOWA 80 X 1200 on my local CL. It was posted in the A.M. when I was at work and couldn't look. When I got home and checked the listings (vintage telescopes are very rare on the Eugene CL, but of course I look every day anyway ) it had already sold. At $125 and nearly pristine, someone got a great scope at a great price! Had it been posted for $250 I might have had a shot, and with no shipping, that for me, would have been a steal.

Hi Binary Star and welcome to CN !

I've often wondered the same thing regarding posting of "non-classic" finds from ebay, craigslist, etc. There doesn't seem to be a place for them. I do think that they should be separate from the Classic Telescope forum and they can't go in Shop and Swap since that is only for member postings and not "finds". Maybe our Moderators can make a suggestion?

Welcome again to CN!

I don't see the rest of the clamshell there to repair it with JB Weld. I think that's about it for the price in that condition.

That Pentax J60 dicussed earlier brought Goodwill nearly a $330 profit. It sure was a nice looking scope and all. I looked at it first hand and I guess to a Pentax collector it was worth every penny. Like I said I'm probably too ignorant to appreciate the value of some scope pedigrees. If someone from CN bought this item please share your findings with us when you take possession. Mike

David, I have had several emails back and forth with the owner of this scope when the add first ran. It is a Tower #6335 D76mm X 1200mm scope. I have made two offers since then and no response after repeated attemps, so I don't know if he sold it or did not like the offers. I hope you have better luck with him.

A vintage Tasco 2.4-inch F/17 on the San Francisco, Calif. Craigslist. This particular model by Tasco was very popular during the 1960s and '70s. It was made in Japan by Royal Astro Optical Industries Co., Ltd.

The equatorial refractor along with accessories and wooden storage chest was posted on June 10, 2009. The link is:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/clt/1214823905.html
(I am not the seller of the telescope.)

Has anyone from that area already looked over this particular scope?

Parks/Clave clone on Hudson Valley, NY Craigslist new [Re: Glassthrower]
      #3158419 - 06/12/09 12:28 AM

A large Parks? Newtonian reflector is listed on the Hudson Valley, New York Craigslist. It was posted on June 11, 2009. The mounting design is decidedly different yet similar to a Cave Astrola. (My understanding is that Parks purchased the casting patterns after Cave went out of business.)

The size of the telescope is hard to judge, but my best guess is a 10-inch with a focal ratio of about F/7. Interesting story as how the owner "inherited" the scope. (How many of us have moved into a house with a classic telescope just sitting there? I wouldn't mind getting another Sears 90mm that way!!!)

The link to the ad is:

http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/for/1196398526.html
(I am not the seller of the telescope.)

What is this telescope? Opinions?

John,

That 7te-5 was apparently snapped up quickly after the ad was posted Terrapin, you're alert and sleepless in the Bay Area... any luck?

Older 6" Newtonian w/eps on Balitmore Craigslist new [Re: Glassthrower]
      #3158443 - 06/12/09 12:56 AM

Ads like this are worth investigating further. A photograph almost always clinches the brand of scope, but in this case speculation leans toward a vintage Edmund or Criterion RV-6. A home-built scope is another possibility. The type of eyepieces (7) and Barlows (2) would indicate a classic Criterion RV-6.

The ad was posted on May 28th, and the link to the website is:

http://baltimore.craigslist.org/for/1193492928.html
(I am not the seller of the telescope.)

Has anyone from that area discovered what this instrument actual is?

I spoke with Aaron 1 1/2 months ago... Hmm fishy story, unreliable phone tag, he's advert for a friend ..etc ..
I'm really cautious now as I was set to go look at it...Zero return of phone calls etc.. very odd.
I'd say caution here.
Ps.. I was wondering if this would surface again soon.

Upon further evaluation of the photographs, especially looking at the size relationship of the focuser to the diameter of the fiberglass tube, this COULD BE A CAVE OPTICAL CO. 12.5-INCH, 14.25-INCH, OR 16-INCH. Cave used that same mounting design on those Observatory scopes. If so, then the seller's "inherited" reflector telescope is an extremely rare one.

Comments from Cave collectors?

Criterion RV-6 Dynascope on Maine CL new [Re: Glassthrower]
      #3158467 - 06/12/09 01:38 AM

A classic Criterion RV-6 Dynascope reflector telescope on the Maine Craiglist. The ad for the vintage 6-inch F/8.3 Newtonian was placed on June 11, 2009. The link to the website is:

http://maine.craigslist.org/pho/1217227078.html
(I am not the seller of the telescope.)

These older Criterion scopes seem to appear in the secondary marketplace on a regular basis.

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.

Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

I would have guessed 10", maybe 12.5". Looks like a Cave.

If the seller on craigslist is hard to reach or make arrangements to see the scope, I'd suspect a scam. If it's a scam, it ought to be flagged. Does anyone recognize these photos from another ad somewhere?

The ad lacks photos, but based on what little description there is, I got to wondering if it might be an old Meade or Cave. I sent the seller an email, and will let folks know what I learn (unless it's a rare bird in fantastic condition, in which case I'll hie myself on down there, pick it up, and THEN tell you about it! )

I talked to the seller. It's a homebuilt on an altazimuth mount (though I haven't seen pics). He said that the mirror was made by someone in Santa Ana. He had the mirror tested by members of the Riverside Telescope Makers about 10 years ago, and they said that it was optically very good.

I'm probably going to let this one go, but if the seller sends me more info on it, I'll pass it along here in case someone is interested.

Ok, I've left yet another phone message to Aaron re the poss. Cave scope. One month ago, I had a scheduled appt. to go see it etc... When I called to confirm directions/etc before I left (as agreed by phone 2 days before), no answer to his phone. I left multiple messages then (as I had taken time off to go look at Aaron's scope) .. Never a response.
So ... on good faith ... One more try today to connect with him as I live very close by to Accord.
So far .. no response.

I have a Meade RG mount and that mount in the CL ad looks nothing like a Meade mount.

It sure looks like a Cave 2.5" mount, as for the OTA who knows.

it is more that likely a Cave. The pictures to small and my eyes to old to tell!! The tangent arm and the flat style cradle reminds me more of the RG than my Astrola. I have never seen a 2.5 Astrola mount. The tube looks like it has a cave plaque on it.

I have a Cave 2.5" observatory mount, but mine has a threaded shaft. On the Meade RG mount you would notice the round Dec lock knob just above the setting circle.

My guess is sometime during the Comet Halley daze. I've seen these sold under Tasco and Jason as well. Tanzutsu seems to be the Japanese watermark.

Here is a review of Celestron's Tabletop 76 which seems very similar to Swift's little scope. It was not well received.
