hi preston, i was looking just the other day so i knew what some were going for. he says its not pristine but for $800 shipped to my door that's a bargain in my opinion. i think i have a nice wood box for it that just needs some foam. i cant wait to get it and try it out. this will be my first triplet. (i left that little hint of blue in the picture to make it easy) Brian

Well that's DEFINITELY a great price! Congrats!
If you wouldn't have had left some of the blue then it would have been a two-way guess: Brandon or early AP.

Mustgobigger,
You are going to love this scope!!! I got mine two years ago and it has been my most used scope I feel that it out performs my Questar 3.5, The lens is INCREDABLE it is probably one of the best refractors that I have ever owned most people who find them very rarely part with them. You should try yours out with Naglers the view is awesome. You got yours for a really good price most go for 1500 just for the OTA. The lens lives up to its reputation as a Astro-Physics Produced Objective. You really got a gem there with it looks like a Unitron altiaz mount, Is the diagonal Vernonscope also? Any thing don Yier produces is exceptional. Here's a picture of mine I just ordered a Quarter Hitch Mount for It and are eagerly awaiting delievery.
Good viewing and clear skys
Gary.

thanks you guy's, i have read nothing but good things about this scope. Gary, i do not know if it is a Brandon diagonal. looks like it is as old as the telescope. i am not sure but was this not the unitron 145 mount. i have been drooling over this and the bigger 110 since i first laid eyes on them. with a 2" focuser i should have a big selection of to throw at it. i have had my eye out for a nagler or 2. a 4.8 and a 13mm. the brandon came in the mail and it looks like ups handled it a little rough. when i opened the wood box the mount came in one of the bake light wing nuts was broken. used superglue on it and mounted it to my unitron 150 alt-az mount. views were ok but startest showed a little flaring so i put it away and did collimation the next afternoon. it was off just a little bit. now i am just waiting for a cloud or 2 to break to retest it. views on the moon were great. this came with a extra set of tube rings that fit my 4" unitron perfect.(guidescope rings in the making) the blue tube had quite a few touchup marks so this is going to my buddy that does car show paint jobs. he will computer match paint and it will look as good as new. here are a few pictures after i waxed it up. I have been waiting to see this do to the outage I had to wait! The scope looks fantastic! The flaring on the stars should Disappear when you collminate the objective you can use a cheshire eyepiece I am sure Caveman can help you out with this, he explained it to me and I got it right on the first shot. The Brandon Diagonal is a great find ( and a finderscope to!!!) they usually go for over $400.00 new if its the quartz model. I collminated the objective with the TV Everbright Dielectric Diagonal inplace as I don't use the scope without it. The tripod looks great I think your repair should hold fine. Enjoy If you become as attached to yours as I am you will never part with it. I just ordered a Quarter hitch alti-azmuth mount for mine with a KB1001 Tripod. Enjoy, clear and steady skies! Gary

hi gary, already did collimation with Cheshire (Without diagonal and its still good when i inserted it) still waiting for clear skies. the book that came with it shows the diagonal as 1/20th wave.(Quartz ?) looks to me like he paid 1,995.00 plus extra for the ring set. see last 4 pictures

That sounds about right I also got the book with mine you really got a fantastic deal this scope rarely come's up on the used market and when they do they are gone fast! I got mine in 2007 from a telescope dealer on the west coast that had it listed in their used optics section I saw it at 7:oo am my time on their site I ordered it from work about a minuet later then waited for the store to open then did a follow up call to confirm it I payed a lot more than you did but the scope was in near mint condition! I had it 3 days later and haven stopped using it since! you had a very good find, you will not be dissappointed with its performance.

Welcome to Brandonland Brian. I just got back from a great Alaska tour and didn't use the net for the whole time. When I tried to log on 3 days ago the site was down. (Actually the message was that I was forbidden access) so I just learned of your latest great deal. I have loved my 94mm. since I got it from Don over 20 years ago. Congratulations on a great acquisition Glenn

Gee Picky picky Brian, As long as it isn't dented enough to throw off the colimation, what differences does paint make? If I painted mine I would have to worry about scratches and I have enough trouble not knocking stuff over in the dark to add anxiety about marring finish as well. Oh well, it will certainly look better all the same color and that robin's egg blue is so pretty. Starry nights to you, Glenn

hi glen, i guess if i make it look as good as i can i will take extra good care of it. i really do not think i am being real picky with this one. it came with a soft case and i was thinking about getting a hard case for it. only thing with this one is i did not think about getting high powers out of it till i used it last night.(takes a lot to get it up there.) preston, if you had this it would be double powder coated in 3 colors and somehow you would still have it looking great.

Brian, Funny you should mention high powers. The only thing that usually seems to limit the power I can get on the Brandon is the atmosphere. Atmosphere usually kills images for me before dimness or fuzzyness kicks in. However, the laws of physics still apply. Larger scopes can show more detail on DSO's and resolve tighter double stars but the clarity of what I do see in the Brandon is seldom surpassed in any scope. Even my 6" starfire is only marginally better. I have been told that my scope is an exceptionally good one, I hope yours gives you as much pleasure as I have had from mine. Clear skies Glenn

Starpoke, I can second that when the atmosphere permits it will perform, the higest manification I can get here in NJ is around 160X to 200x (Nagler 3-6 zoom) on really good nights on planetary targets, otherwise it performs best around 80x-125x, I dont't think this scope has a max. magnification limit except what the atmosphere can bare. I have never owned a Telescope like my Brandon 94 It gives my Questar 3.5 a run for its money. Mustgo bigger You have to try for the Triffid Nebula with an Ultra high contrast filter (narrow band) This is the only Telescope I own that will give me a glimpse of it in my semi light polluted skies!

Yep, I agree with the power thing.
I have a Stellarvue 115mm triplet and with atmosphere issues I can only push up to 160X-200X but in dark skies with no scintillation (seeing) issues I can easily shoot up to 300x and more.
BTW: a new paint job will almost ALWAYS increase your power by an additional 25X!

the other night i was viewing jupiter and a few double stars with 12mm and 6mm and at 55x and 109x i guess i am just used to those 1500mm FL compared to 658mm FL. i am used to getting 125 and 250x out of the same eyepieces. ill get the hang of it. then there is my cave and i get 160x and 320x with the same eyepieces. i guess i will need good tracking to get 300x out of this Brandon. going to have to get me one of those 4x powermates. preston, i wonder if i ad another baffle if i can squeeze 6 or 8x more out of it. maybe some flocking too. along with new paint and everything i might even squeeze 40x extra.

Brian....What type of paint was used? Or do you even know? I settled on epoxy enamel for my 20TE project. It was a *BLEEP* shoot. I couldn't decide because I don't know the advantages of one versus another. Oh well so be it. That blue color was the other one I was considering for my observatory scopes....I love it and have a can in my arsenal. But I chose the Tidepool green for other reasons. Later Mike

Beautiful work Brian. When I look at it it reminds me of what mine looked like in the 80's. I am a disaster with a spray can so I shall put off doing anything to mine for a while longer, but Oh, the LONGING!!!! Clear skies and you really do need to take it out in the dark at least once in a while. Glenn

glen, its going out next clear night. regrettably i might be putting a few scopes up for sale and this one might be one of them. if i had to paint this on with a spray can i would have just left it alone as i never would have matched paint. Brian

he sure does, looks like brand new does it not. he does show quality. i paid a lot for paint but it was worth it in my opinion. give us a first light report. and dont forget to check collimation as i had to do slight adjustment when it was shipped to me. cheers, Brian

yes brian , it looks like brand new! It was well worth getting it painted. Kudo's too your painting friend! The more i think about it the more i would like wild color on the 3" unitron compact..what do you think? Orange like my chevelle or purple like Questar 7? Any how just dreaming. john

You do not want to do that to a unitron do you? i say white like a unitron. any other color for the unitron and you will have to talk to preston. he will lead you to the powder coater he uses. they have lots of pretty colors. i would do those colors on something that almost has to be restored.
i think someone said they made a run of 500 of the 94mm.

I agree brian, but...no one seems too like the unitron compacts so with that said...it could always be reversed. john

Yes I believe 500 units produced of the Brandon 94 is correct, On cloudy nights there is in the Equipment review? an article by Clive Gibbons that states that in his review of the Brandon 94 APO. This not a very common telescope I have seen very few for sale on the used market. If they all perform like the one I have I can understand why!
