Can anyone tell me who the manufacturer of this 8 inch scope is? I was told it was a Cave, but it came with a Criterion eyepiece and an Optica 25X60 finder. It also came with an Comstar 4.25 scope bungees corded to an old Edmund GEM mount. I am hoping I can use the mount for the 8 inch scope.

It looks to be assembled from parts and not 100% from one manufacture vs the other. The tube looks to be made by Parks and Cave used them but one could also buy them directly from Parks to build you own 'scope. Add to that the finder is non standard for either company and while the focusers looks to be Criterion, they used a different type of tube and most didn't have end rings.
The mirror will be key. Cave mirrors are usually fine ground flat on the back and somewhere on the back scripted as being made by Cave.

I doesn't look like any Criterion I've ever seen. Some Criterions came with tube end rings but most didn't, and the focuser and spider are usually much closer to the end of the tube on Criterions.
Also, Criterion mounted the focuser with the knobs in line with the scope tube, not from the side as in the photo. The base of the focuser was curved to fit the curve of the tube and would only go on that way. Of course, someone could have swapped it out, but my guess is that Dave is right and it's got bits and pieces from several different makes.

Thanks for the info.. Here are a couple of pictures of the back of the mirror. There is an edge around the outside and the letter "P" or "d" depending on how you look at it on the back.

Edmund cell. Never seen a Criterion 8" cell so not sure if they could be the same.
Could we see a picture of the mount?

i had a Edmund mirror that i picked up at a estate sale
and it looked like that mirror back.

Definitely Edmund cell and mirror. Looks like it could be a Criterion focuser - not a Jaegers, not Optica, not Telescopics, not Edmund. Criterion also had tubes with end rings but they tended to put the focuser way up the tube. Optica sold a 25x50mm guider/finder but not a 25x60mm in the catalog I know.

It isnt Cave stuff, I would have to agree with the Edmunds guess. Criterion focusers are easy to spot. I have very little Edmunds stuff but there old optics have always impressed me, I have a very old 50s prizum Diag. That is one of the best I own, Sharp as a tack and is always out of the box when I am using old scopes.

Definitely not a Criterion. My diagnosis? Home built from parts (Parks, Edmund, etc.)...which ain't a bad thing if it was inexpensive enough.

Sounds good folks, thanks for the input. Unfortunately there isn't a mount yet. It didn't come with one. I do know the mount the guy had under the 4.25 scope is an Edmund and the scope was mounted on it at one time. The mount is pretty heavy and if I can figure out how to put this scope on it I might try it and see if it works ok. The mount is way overkill for the 4.25 scope. Just have top figure out how to make some rings or something..

The old Edmund diagonals like that one are superb, and that Edmund 1" Kellner in lower right.
The 8" mirror could be a f8, if Edmund or Criterion it will be a UPCO and also superb.
If the mount is too heavy to pick up may be a Edmund 1.5" and also excellent, will handle that 8" OTA like it was a cracker jack's pirate scope.

Here is my well used Edmund 1.5" with a 10" OTA. This is all cast iron castings, very heavy. But you can see the distinct style and the way you would attach the OTA with straps.

Clint....I have an old Jaegers prism diagonal. They look very similar and it is flawless. What is that old Jaegers eyepiece? Mine is an "extremely" wide field 15mm Erfle.  Mike

Well the shafts are 1 inch. Would that be ok or should I try to figure out something else? Also are those just banding straps or something like that?

A close up of the focuser would help.
The mirror cell is definitely Edmund. I suspect the mirror is also Edmund. It is a match for my 6" f/8 Edmund mirrors.
The tube is probably a Parks.
The finder rings are most likely from Jeagers.
The finder is a small scope that was probably marketed as a table top scope, orignally and was adapted as a focuser.
The GEM with 1" axles was for the 6" reflectors and 4" refractors. ALL of the Edmund 8" OTAs were supported by a GEM with 1-1/2" axles.
This seems to be a home brew.

The straps are generic hardware stainless straps with 1/4" swiveling studs on the ends. They come in a bunch of sizes. This is what was stock for this mount saddle. The 1" mount does not have the holes like this, for the strap studs.
The Edmund 1" shaft mount will be too small for that tube. It can be done but it will be under sized.

Mike I think Robert nailed it with the 1" erf. By the way the weird eyepieces is the Perterson Volcano top lower left. Never seen another one of those

That Edmund Kellner eyepiece was my favorite before I sold it with my 8-inch scope in 1963 just before my enlistment in the service. That Kellner came with my Edmund Palomar Jr. that I purchased used from Cave Optical in 1958 for $64.
Here's a picture of the Kellner setting on a medium ground 8-inch mirror that I wasn't able to finish.

I've never used this eyepiece but I think I can imagine what he's talking about the with disappearing act - the exit pupil has no SA so you can put your eye anywhere and the image is stable - and you can't see the barrel or the field stop at some point and the eyepiece is just gone! that must be spectacular to experience.
