I find myself starting to collect the older classic refractors.
Many of the scopes I find have no storage case or box.
I am planning on building some cases for the scope I have and will have...what recommendations does the group have?
How about the layout of the components in the cases that are out there (Sears, Towa, Unitron, etc.), what works and what doesn't? How can the layouts be improved?
Thanks

If you want ease of construction at a very reasonable price and super strong try Stitch and Glue. I have built many a kayak and even a few telescopes using this method and i was planning on building a storage box for my 4" Unitron with the method.

Hey, great stuff Brian!
What do you use to sand away the extra epoxy from the outside seams?

I made many eyepiece boxes now and I'm going to start making them for OTAs. I can send you my details if it will help out. Just dovetail all the joints and glue them with titebond II and they won't come apart. I'm going to make some cases for my C14 and another, as well as some other accessory cases. Let me know any other email you have and I'll get you some copies of drawings to you. Rich

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to see those details Rich.

Preston first off i PM'd you with a correction on the 40mm lens.
If you are careful you won't even notice the seams, it is very easy. If you bevel the seams on the inside only you will have nice joints on the outside. The system is great for quick, easy, good looking builds. The nicer the plywood the nicer the outcome. It will never look as nice as dovetail or finger joints as Rich is suggesting but for large projects where you may not want to spend too much time with joinery it is an option.

Hi Rich!
It was Albert1 that requested the drawings.

Very cool Brian! NICE work. Several years back one of my periodicals had plans for building a canoe using the same type of construction that you speak of. My brother-in-law and I were going to build one, but never got around to it. Man, that is one cool kayak. Very nice finish job as well. What kind of ply? Baltic Birch?? The stain and finish are beautiful. Rich

Brian, Question for you on the joinery up front. It appears to have some sort of key joint that appears as an arrow tip towards the front. I am unfamiliar with that joint. Also, how many hours do you estimate that you have into that beauty? Tell me you just look at it and don't actually put it in the water. That is outstanding! Rich

Rich so we don't get in trouble with the Mods. HERE is the link with some of the build. It may also help if anyone wants to use this method for building a large storage box for their telescope.<----(see still on topic) I can answer any questions on that post to appease the mods. My first kayak was from scratch this one was from a kit, the arrow shape is a kerf that was laser cut from the factory. No stain just clear varnish, it is saple and okume plywood, very thin. The whole boat is under 40lbs at 18" long. My next one i will be building this winter is a strip built Baidarka. Strip building is another great way to build a large case and is really purdy yet takes alittle more work.

Thanks Brian, I didn't realize that the kayak was a kit. I was wondering how you made those puzzle joints. I also didn't realize that it was so thin. Sure did turn out nice. Thanks for the link, I'll go over it when I have more time. Rich

Your kayak looks great Brian. I made a couple of Pygmy kayaks from plans using stitch and glue and they were easy and quick to build.
I built a scope storage case from 1/4 inch ply, 3/4 inch for the scope support cross members. I later added foam blocks to secure the finder scope and other accesories. You can make it and modify it any way you like.

Nice job Andy! Takahashi green in color as well, nice touch. I am a big fan of your wood scopes. I am surprised that not too many people haven't caught on to the benefits of these scopes. They are strong and light weight.
