Current Market Value for a Tasco 7TE-5?
      #3404676 - 10/22/09 05:36 PM

If you have been with this great group for at least 3-5 years, you know that it was this great forum that truly pieced together the origins and outstanding capability of the mighty Tasco 7TE-5. For those of us who have at least one (yes, many have MORE than one) it is a highly-valued instrument.

I purchased my "herd" several years ago with the lowest price being a steal at $40. The others were more toward $100. What do you think the current market value would be for a complete scope package in good condition?

Hi Brian!

Hmm, that seems a little high to me but I haven't been watching the prices on 7TE-5s lately as I don't really need any more of them!

Others?

More like 175 to 250 now a days. I was surprised at how low some of these were selling for. A few years ago one went for over $400....I got outbid on what I thought was a super high safe bid.....

Preston,
I heard that they were running about $50 for a pristine one, and that the seller usually picks up the shipping charges. Coincidentally, I'm in the market for one.

Hi Rich!

Well then, that makes it about the same value as a Sears 90mm refractor! Wanna swap?

I wish I could have gotten mine for $100. And I don't even want to talk about $40. At least I got a pristine example.

I suspect that there are a BUNCH of them out there, but even so, they don't turn up that often. One has to wonder though, whether once word gets out as to their desirability if the market might not be flooded with them? Would that affect value? (Probably not, since demand seems fairly high). That is high until all the CN Classics members get one - then it'll drop precipitously.

I think those 7TE-5s are probably about $250-325. I've never viewed through one, I had the 7TE, but it was only 910mm? focal length, if I remember correctly.

Here in germany it's a shame ! You can often see 7TE-5 sold for 5 (!!) - 50 €, never more !!
I love these nice, little, but high quality scopes, but here in germny not many people knowing the real value of it.
The background is the very bad reputation from Tasco here !
We were overflooded in these times by really bad modern Tasco "Toy-telescopes". So the reputation is low and people do not remember, that there were times Tasco had made/sold high-quality optics !

Kind regards Michael

Oh, Sorry John! Can do:

-60mm/1000mm f16.6 single coated doublet made by Astro Optics
-Collimable Lens Cell
-OTA had thicker aluminum wall
-very long draw tube to support 3X barlow
-large, metal focus knobs for fine focus
-GEM mount - indications are that it was made by Towa
-30mm finder
-Wooden Case
-Styrofoam inserts in case
-wooden legs - style is similar to Tasco 10TE 3" refractor
-sun projection screen
-Came with a H20mm, H12.5mm, H6mm eyepieces and 3x Barlow
- correct image prism set, and diagonal
-.965 focal back

Most excellent for planetary viewing.

Yes, that's correct - 910mm focal length. Still a very good scope just not as many bells and whistles as the 7TE5. What I like most about the 7TE is that it has a large, single tube focuser that you can screw a 1.25" adapter into!

We have the same issue here Michael. Sadly, many high quality Tasco scopes were thrown into the trash. I know of one instance where someone threw out a 90mm Tasco because it was a "Tasco" This happened years ago.

I bought mine by accident for 150.00 off CL. I just wanted a guidescope with a white dew shield and metal knobs.

Guidescope? NO WAY

I don't think I said much to the guy once I started looking it over, I was in some kind of shock. I knew this was not your average Tasco.

A real nice unrestored complete rig with all pieces and box really should be worth $300.00

Robert

Hi Guys!I'd say a 7te-5 in great shape would run between $120 to $180 depending on wether it has all the original accessories. These scopes are getting harder to find though.I jumped on mine for around $120 plus shipping, and it is in excellent condition!!!!It could cost more if you found one with a Tasco clock drive. Here's mine.G

The telescope optics are the same, although overall fit and finish may not be up to Unitron standards.

Hi Folks! Yes, David is correct on both counts. The optical performance of both scopes is about the same while the Unitron has the edge on the mechanics - especially the mount. I have both scopes.

Mine's worth about $500. But I got mine from a reputable source.

No one from here - that's for sure!

Hey Preston,

You may recall that I mention in another thread that an older amateur told me that in the 60's Consumer Reports compared a Tasco 7te-5 to a comparable Unitron and it beat the Unitron optically. As for mechanical construction, the Unitron obviously took the trophy. Wish I could validate this information.

I think if this scope was still being produced with the same quality of optics, it would fetch maybe about $350.00+. When I think about the cost of today's fast 60mm high-end refractors and apochromats, and compare the Tasco 7te-5's optical quality to them, it could go even higher.

As for a complete unit from the past, I would say 250.00+.

Yeah, and I'm growing hair, too!

HEY!

Are you going to give me a serious market estimate or not?

You are! I would like to see that.
