Geeze if that's pretty dirty, I wonder what a clean one would look like. Looks like you scored another fine specimen.
The first lens I had in mine was ok but not great. But I got another housed in the no ears cell and it truely is an awesome performer. Might be the best lens I own. Extremely happy with it. Good luck on yours.

thanks bill,
pictures are after i spent 2 hours on it today.
i had to remove all the packing tape and goo that
the shipper stuck all over the cell and tube.

i was pretty upset to say the least.
a few rubber bands and some plastic would have
saved a lot of work, not to mention putting goo-off
all over everything.
i hope after doing lens clean and collimation
it proves out to be a fine performer.
that will make me feel better.

tried this scope out last night
and its definitely not up to par in my opinion.
looked good on moon.
did 7 sisters and looked good also
when i did orion it was good up to 200x
and when i used a barlow at 400 things kind of washed out.
when i did a single star test rings were concentric
but outer ring in and out of focus was flared.
i think spacing might be off as things were close
but not good enough for 75mm unitron.
ill have to do a little more experimenting
on this one.
more to come.

Brian,
Good idea to try and tweek it. Let us know your results. However I can attest that all Unitron lenses are NOT created equal. Good luck and keep us posted.

hi bill,
yes i agree about not being equal.
when i view a single star i see no coma but
view could be just a bit crisper.
did flashlight test in dark with bright red light
and all looked good.(no spots on lens center)
i had one a bit back that should have been .005 gap
and views were not good till i hit .008 (my 4" Edmund)
maybe i will re space in early morning when i get home
from work. (its raining again)
it could be a bad lens but i have a feeling it just needs
a little tweaking. it was close but not there.

hi john,
no i have not tried yet.
maybe i will today before work.
it was cloudy last night so i did not get to try
the worm gear 140 out.
i would not mind having these 2 side by side for a comparison.
i better get on it as the boss asked me how busy
i am in my room and i said real busy.
they just started working some guys 12 hour shifts
last night an i have a feeling i am next.
that means eat, sleep and work for next 2 months.

if this is no better than first check
i will go to .006 or .007 and see how that works
and it might take several tries like my
edmunds 4" but it was worth it.

Hey brian, i know how you feel as i worked in powerplant and never knew if i was going home from day to day. also on call as mechanic..and i wonder why i drink. very stressful job for 13 years. glad they sold (privatized) place and put me as carpentor helper. New Job much less stressful and actually enjoyable and i keep same pay. Anyhow let me know when you want money for brandon. You do good work and thanks for pictures! John

preston,
no, the crown is right but views were
not quite sharp as they should be.
no coma, and i tried several good eyepieces
and just a bit off.
when i checked lens it seemed like there was 0 gap in
center of lens, like it was ready to rock back and forth.
if all fails i can go back to original thickness.
i think this will do the trick.
john,
thanks
looking like thursday of friday. i have a guy coming up
from ohio then its yours.
Brian

OH YEA...
That did The Trick.
What A Difference, Procyon.. concentric in and out, sharp
crisp views. also did Pleiades's, and orion.
seven sisters is one of my favorites with my 26mm silver top.perfect fit in field.
Orion with 12mm radian looked great.
also used 6mm series 4000 plossl on orion.
nebula looked way better than before with both EP.
just waiting for the moon and that's it for this one as its done.
the kansas one on my worm mount is a little off
and not quite as crisp as this one
so i might do the same tweak to this one
but i need to spend a little more time on it tonight.
i wish i was at a dark site tonight.
also somethings up with finder... tunnel vision,
lens might be flipped.
weather is mild for this time of year.
going back out for a bit.
Brian
