Egg trays from our old Hotpoint refridgerator make excellent temporary parts bins. Every screw, washer, nut and spacer will be removed and individually dipped in naval jelly and power brushed with a Dremel tool by hand. This is a very tedious and time consuming process. The only part not removed from the OTA was the rear mounting bracket from the front sliding tube weight. It's mounting nuts and washers were behind a glare stop that was too far down the tube to reach by hand.

Immediately after labeling and orientation the lens cell was removed and inspected. Hey I just noticed something....did you?

Notice how the collimation ring is a seperate entity from the lens cell. After blowing and dusting large tube "debris" from the rear element the lens unit was safely stored away from the work area.

A view down the tube from the front end. It appears that the glare stop was put into place first then the tube was swabbed with flat black paint.

Cradle dings and scrapes are glazed and hand sanded. All prep work and painting was done on the patio for easy spotting of any missed issues.

Next the CW's are power sanded. All surfaces are primed.

When sanding the tube you get below that "yellowed" aging. Then I primed pop cans and applied primer and the finish coats. This is as close as I could get!

Now to the finishing paint. I find those cheap spray can guns the easiest to use. You have more control over short bursts by squeezing than tiring out your index fingers. Here are the finished CW's.

Next the main tube. Jury rigged to rotate by hand at my discretion.

And last but not least the pier. I didn't disturb the "velvet" crinkle finish on the lower black part. I toothbrushed naval jelly onto the chromed bolts. After cleaning and polishing them I placed 5/8" plastic furniture leg tips over each one before I sprayed. Beats the heck out of removing them which is a job or masking them.

Chuck I used Ace Epoxy Enamel. I find it gives a nice satin finish rather than a gloss finish. Mike

Shown here are the rechromed items. The large main focus tube of 1/16" thick solid brass.....had to weigh a pound. Next is the drawtube for the 25x50mm guidescope. Then the front and rear tube weight rods. Lastly the threaded CW rod.

Here we see the finished tailpiece and drawtube assembly installed. I reversed the secondary drawtube and fabricated a new visual back. Then internal glides were installed to accept the Unitron drawtube. Three nylon locking screws then secure the drawtube allowing rotation of the Unihex A.
