Floyd,
you are a great guy and a wealth of information on imaging. I am glad to see this wonderfull telescope belong a great astronomer and artist like you. Out of all the classic scopes there are none as as cool looking or as fun to use as the 4" EQ Unitron.

Hi Clint, very kind of you.

I am glad to take care of this scope for a time. I would like to think that it will look the same as now, when it finally finds another caretaker.

I have spent two days fitting the nice Pelican case to the mount with hard foam, so that all the parts are held securely without scratching each other. Also making soft cases for most of the loose items. I am still working at making a hard case for the Unihex but have finished setting up the EP case that came with the scope with new closed cell foam, cut to fit each EP and other item.

Oh, there is a new soft case for the tripod too as well as the finder scope. I make cases for scopes and accessories for people, so I make custom ones for everything I own.

Things are looking pretty good and I will finish this week.
More photos to come showing the cases and such, hopefully giving some one ideas for their own scope.

Blueman your 4 inch Unitron is excellent!!
May I ask the folding legs- what is their length as I am trying to build a pair for my own Polarex 4 inch. Could you measure each components length for me.

Many thanks

Steve

OK Clint, I got photo of the cases and stuff. I will post them one at a time.
1st, the Unihex case, made from a premium cigar case made of what appears to be mahogany.
Nice closed cell foam used for the padding and the saddles that hold the Unihex and the tube. Then the soft foam pad on the top holds everything in place with slight compression.

Next, the EP case with, EPs, Poro Prism and Hershel Wedge and Solar and Moon filters.
Just case foam cut to hold each item, with foam padding on the bottom that supports each at the proper height.
I may replace the foam with a wooden tray with the holes in it, like the original case for the 5 .965" EPs that I have seen in pictures.

Then the Mount case with foam inserts, weight bag and Slo-Motion and Locking shaft case.
Weight bag is in the lower left corner. In the upper right, there is a pouch with the counter weight shaft in it, but it is black and does not show well.
The solid closed cell foam partition keep the cradle separated and also hold the mount head in place. It is glued to the case walls.
The EP case fits in well and I figure it is a good place and will keep me from forgetting the EPs.

Now the OTA case, with mods made to allow the finder to stay mounted to the OTA. I made a saddle for the finder to rest on and then cut a saddle from the upper partition and lined both with a gray dashboard cover material, soft and padded.
This makes it nice, just drop the OTA in the case and your done.
Plus I added a block to hold the Solar Panel Viewer rod in place, it just Velcros there and you pull it off. But it keeps the rod from shifting and possibly rubbing the OTA or Dew Shield.

Finally, the mount case, showing how things fit when it is stowed.
The harder closed cell foam blocks on the lid hold the mount head and the cradle in place when the lid is close, with some compression. Keeps it all in place quite well.
You will see a long pouch at the top that is the counter weight shaft case. It keeps the thing from banging around plus it looks nice.
The Counter Weight pouch works nicely, keeps it from scratching too. Did not need a partition for it, the mount head hold it in place.

Hi Clint,
I would be glad to make you a case for your EP tray. Just give me the dimension of the triangle, measured with a straight edge laid along the tray. Just by drawing a triangle along the straight edge on paper, would then give us the length of the three sides. I am not sure that all the trays are identical.
Send me the info by email.
