OK, so I started disassembling the scope tonight and I finally found where you keep the electrical tape! Now why didn't I think to look inside the focuser sooner.

Don't be too quick to throw it out. That may be where the guy kept his stash of diamonds rolled up.

I took the aluminum rings off the ends of the scope tonight using a wooden wedge. Very carefully I slowly worked around the edge of the tube where it meets the rings. I'm sure the more experienced folks can vouch for this. If you pry to hard or get in a rush, you stand a good chance of bending the aluminum. These rings will need some sanding, but should buff out to a nice shine.

When I pulled out the primary mirror assembly, I noticed that when you hold the mirror up to a light you can see "light spots through the surface of the mirror. Can anyone explain this to me? Does this mean the mirror should be recoated? If needed, I'm considering the shop in Iowa City, Iowa or Nova Optical in Utah. Advice is very welcome. The secondary is a lot of spots too, but I'm not sure yet if that's just dust or surface damage.

Paul, Parks still sell R&P focusers and even the adapter ring alone, that screws into the drawtube - here:

2" adapter ring

The new motor arrived from Edmunds today. It's an exact match for the one that was broken off the telescope. I started sanding the paint off some of the telescope parts today. Rod,...definitely send me the info on "Hopkins". thanks

Take this a day at a time and a step at a time. Ultimately, you will have a very nice telescope, made even more enjoyable because you restored it.

Here's the brackets after. The right one is polished and clear-coated. The left one is prepped for final buffing. I started with paint stripper, washed parts, then 240 grit. I worked that down in steps to 1500 grit. All sanding was done "wet". Final buffing with a cloth and polish, then cleared

I thought I was the only one who did things like that.

Thought I'd take a break from sanding and polishing to show off some progress.

Started putting the hardware back on the tube last night. At any time, if you see something to comment or advise on, please do. This is my first scope restoration and I'm "LAG". (Learn As you Go).

So, what's this little attachment for? Guessing to hold a counter-weight or maybe some other attachment? There is a knob for tightening.

Yep, that's a camera support bracket. Edmund I think had one like that. I ordered my Optical Craftsmen with the camera bracket option, but it's next to the focuser and supports the bracket perpendicular, rather than tangent, to the tube.
