Mine was - "White telscope, old, comes with wood box. Used to work, seems like something is loose inside. Don't know anything about it. Comes with stand. Good for outdoor use or astronomy. Extra lenses included. No pictures as camera is broke."

I always wonder about that guy on ebay who is selling his refractors as "blue refractor..." or "black refractor" as though color is an important criteria when shopping...
Then again, if I bought a scope and it turned out to be hot pink I might not want to keep it... Craig

Antique Outdoor Telescope - $3300 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Originally from the shore of Lake Michigan at the American Science Center. Fully restored, perfect operating condition. Coin operated, takes quarters, has child steps built-in. A substantial architectural piece (over a hundred pounds) - great for a beach house.

If that's the case, then you shouldn't ever buy a scope from Preston. His are purple, and so are our friend John's from way up North!!

Steve,
There are so many to choose from! Some of my favorites are:
*A simple $25 Tasco #55VTE (60mm alt-az) on Craigslist where the seller, obviously a real estate agent, described and displayed the telescope as if it were a statue by Auguste Rodin or Frederic Remington.
**Ads where the seller has the telescope pointed straight down into the floor.
***Garage or estate sale ads where all that they say is 'Telescope.' No picture or description. How many Cave Astrolas or Nikon refractors have been sold this way?
****Ads that include only a couple of words and a telephone number but nothing else. No picture, description or brand name. Such imaginative single phrases as "Nice looking", "Great telescope", "Telescope, used only a couple of times", "Paid a lot", "In grandpa's attic for years", "Make an appointment to see", "Stored in basement", "Never used", "See the stars", "In case", "BIG telescope", "Older telescope I know nothing about", and so forth.

My favorite was a Wanted ad from Houston Craigslist:
Quote:
I want a Telescope.
I don't want a cheapy little kids telescope either. I have an office here on the 10th floor with a window facing south and I'd like to have a telescope that can see all the way downtown.
But I'm also a cheapskate and don't want to spend the money. But I'll barter.
I have some LCD computer monitors. I have a guitar effects processor thats probably only worth about 40 bucks.
I am a computer professional , so I can offer website development work in exchange for the telescope.
Or if you have something else in mind that you'd like to trade if for , just let me know.
I'll expect you to bring the telescope here and set it up so I can try before I buy.

Sometimes they have pictures. A keen eye will tell you this is a Unitron, and if you are really sharp it is a model 760. look close and you can see it has all its original eyepieces.
The funny thing is that they even put effort into posting a picture at all.

What is encouraging about this particular advertisement is the presence of some older Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines. The telescope could also be in that age range (1940-1970), and may have some very desirable eyepieces or other accessories.
Contrary to the seller's feeling that potential buyers might be 'scared away' because his items are not new, most treasure hunters are lured by the fact that they are OLD.

This is the complete info about the telescope for sale:
Here is a high quality Telescope. Cost approx, $600.00 new. Has many optic lenses for various planetary magnifications. This thing is really awesone. Now you can see the man in the moon and the Pyrimids on Mars (ha ha joking). Anyway, I'm looking to trade this for a 50 to 65 in or there abouts, big screen HDTV or plazma. Or sell for asking $300.00 Has original manuals. Many micor setting. Believe me, it's a high quality item. I live in the Zanesville area.

Did you ever notice that you only get responses to about 1/2 your emails to a CL seller? They list a telescope, it is within driving distance of my house, I actually ask real questions (not, "I want to buy your item") and never get a response. Not even a "sorry it is sold". Just venting - thanks.

That happened to me this week. I emailed the seller, the scope is maybe 3 miles from my house, a mile from my route to work, and it took a day to get a response. The seller agreed that after work would probably be best, and seeing it would be the best way to learn about it. But other than telling me what major intersection it's near, he hasn't said anything about how to contact him or when we might meet.
It's a rusty old Newt, so I think I'll just let it go, on the gamble that none of it is especially collectible.

I'd never pay $1,000 for that refractor when I can spend "only" $400 for this reflector: http://modesto.craigslist.org/pho/2064655802.html
I mean, c'mon: it's totally worth it because the seller assures me that the color is "totally auesome."

OMG
I wasn't expecting this but considering the nature of this string....
Right after I posted this I got a call from the East Coast about the Fecker and Unitron. That's when I quickly added the addendum to CN and AM. Since then I have had two calls about my reference to 'Canadian' and 'American' guys!
Craigslist had deboggled my first post with specific pictures, then wouldn't let me repost for 48 hours using the pictures. I didn't want to waite so I revamped the ad and used another handy picture. I wanted to get the idea across of being a scope guy a little more dedicated than your typical garage dumper.
The addendum must have worked. I haven't had any more request for my classics........now don't start.

I like this one, currently on the Washington, DC craigslist
"Regular telescope gray in color with stand and extra scopes for $15.00"
I guess it's better than an irregular telescope

The seller is eager to show/sell that Tasco telescope. It was offered for $115, then $100, and then $75 over a few hours on Saturday He couldn't/wouldn't answer my questions about the condition of the objective lens ("glass at the big end of the tube") or send me any higher res pics of anything.

Hey, those finder orientations are so you can see where you've been. I like the statement about missing the lens. Most likely the mirror is in place, but the seller thinks there should be some glass at the front. who know's, maybe the primary IS missing. Could be a cheap Vixen that has the optics. Lord knows I don't need another 114.

Well, obviously, the Seller saw that Park's ad for a $2000 60mm refractor and said to himself - "Hey! - I can beat that. Mine even comes with a $200 Microscope Option!"

So I made the seller an offer and he accepted. So the only thing missing is the eyepieces and a nut on the finder bracket. I'm going to clean it up, scrape together some eye pieces and give it to the school.

They are called DISCUS , google them. Most people think salt water has the prettiest fish but i think Discus are on par if not prettier . Just like saltwater tanks Discus Discus tanks are difficult to keep and require lots of time and care to keep the fish happy. There is nothing more rewarding than having a pair mate and seeing the fry feed off the parents. I gave my fish away to my local breeder(he is a super clean freak, not a puppy mill) because i knew they wouldn't survive moving from my first house to my new house. It killed me but it was the right thing to do, the breeder was ecstatic because he was getting six healthy Discus worth over a thousand dollars. After the kids go off to college i plan on starting a new tank with live plants and Discus again. If you want to be sucessful with these fish it takes time and money so don't buy one of these from your local aquarium and expect breeding 6" Discus. I was collecting and filtering rainwater for the longest time, until i bought a reverse osmosis water system. Discus need time, love, and care. TLC

Well, I hope the mods don't mind. I never had any Discus, but I always wanted some.
When I was a teenager, I started collecting tropical fish. At the height of my OCD, I had 9 aquariums in my room, from 10 to 40 gallons. I loved cichlids, particularly angels, oscars, and an absolutely hilarious red devil that needed to have his own 15 gallon tank. Even the plycostamous couldn't stay out of his way!
I worked for about a year at a fish store, when the owner of the store I used to go to for my supplies opened a new store in Huntington Beach. I think I made a whopping $1.65/hr.
I got discounts on fish and supplies, so I started a couple tanks of Lake Nyasa cichlids. Beautiful fish! I think I had them for about a month when a fungal infection quickly killed them all and I sort of lost my drive after that.
I can't believe the varieties out there now! Golden angels were a pretty new thing when I was last into fish in the early 70s.
-Tim.

Not a telescope, but I can't help it. Meade 14mm UWA 4000
"This eyepiece is in fair/average used condition. Glass is flawless, but there are a few micro scratches in the coatings from cleaning by previous owners, however they are hard to detect (I had to use a magnifying glass to see them). The views are very, very nice and performance is just as good as the most perfect example you can find."

Fired off following query:
"Dear bizzymad, How much for the goat?"
Got following reply:
"Dear ..., Hi - I`m an EBay trading assistant selling for someone. They want it to do a full auction. They are hoping for about 175 pounds. I dont think they`ll get that - but who knows? Sorry i couldnt be of more help. B
- bizzymad"
So what do you guys think? Is £175 the going price for a goat nowadays?
Danged, I'm tempted!

And the finder (hiding in the case) has apparently hired a stand-in for the eBay photo shoot. Has anyone here had success using a barlow as shown? I always point mine the other way.

I remember my brother-in-law bought his daughter one of these Galileo scopes (as pictured in this ad) for Christmas one year: it has that weird mount with the double-counterweight setup that I've never seen on any other scope from any manufacturer. I never got a chance to use it with her to see how it worked. I doubt she ever used it, either.

I think the heavy and sturdy adjustable aluminum tripod legs and massive EQ 1.5 mount distinguish this as a "Professional Series" telescope. Or, it might be the words "Professional Series" on the side of the tube or maybe the inclusion of the high-quality Kellners and "Moon Lense."

Current scope ad, nothing but a picture and I think it may be a Tasco10-TE. $500. So, I call the guy and ask what is the model, etc. He says it is his parents, and he will check it out this weekend and let me know. I ask "Why $500?" and he says -"I looked on the internet and see telescopes go from $200 - $1,000 so I priced it in the middle."
