What a great shot! That is one nice scope.
We were clouded out here in southern NH. Luckily, I have photos from the last TOV. As a sidelight, I was a professional musician most of my life and the was a march written by John Philip Sousa commemorating the 1882 transit. Not his best march, but still Sousa.

I should post these here:

My setup for 1st and 2nd contact: Tak FC-76 and Coronado Solarmax II on Super Polaris mount with Gotonova kit.

Here's 2nd contact with the Tak 76, taken from a video sequence that started just after first contact. I had the Tak stopped down with the filter over the opening in the lens cap for this. Later, I took that off and made a full-aperture filter.

Tim, that's a really nice sharp picture thru the FC76.

I tried eyepiece projection with my FC76 using a 12.5mm UO ortho. Used a Baader visual solar filter and colorized the image to try and match an older 1000 Oaks glass filter.

Stephen:

These are awesome scopes, huh!?

I took some full aperture video just before the sunset sequence above, where I caught a number of planes and a couple clouds go across the sun's disk during the transit. Here's the first plane, with a thin cloud for a bonus:

Second cloud transit. Note how Venus gets squashed a bit as the bottom of the cloud passes.

Another full sun, processed from video sequence. The sun didn't quite fit the vertical dimension of the frame, until it got low enough that refraction flattened it somewhat!

WOW Tim, the resolution of the jet is outstanding and even more so considering how low the sun was getting. Indeed the FC76 is an awesome scope!

How/What did you shoot your video. I should have used the camcorder on the FC76.

Stephen

I used a Pt Grey Scorpion 1600x1200 monochrome camera and Astro IIDC software to take and process the videos.

Stephen:

Been meaning to ask you about your 2" eyepiece adapter. Is it a Tak accessory? If not, who makes it and where can *I* get one?

Also, do you just have the OTA, or did yours come with the P2 mount? I'd like to add a drive to mine, but I'm not sure what's available. A motorized Dec slow motion would be nice as well, but I won't modify the mount to add it.

-Tim.

Hi Tim, The visual back is Tak part #TOA0050 that I bought from Art at TNR several years ago. See photo.

No mount, only have the OTA with matched FC76 Focal Reducer and FS78 Temba carrying case.

Stephen

Tim, you might be able to find something suitable from Baader Planetarium.

I took this scope with me to Utah week before last (yeah, it was full moon, but I was just testing things out), and really love the optics in the 76. But I had it mounted on my Super Polaris, which I adapted an iOptron Gotonova to ( Goto'd Super Polaris Mount) ), but I had a few alignment problems (that I should have expected). The Tak clamshell has two mounting holes (that oddly aren't on a perp line to the castings), so I mounted it to a dovetail plate and mounted that to the SP mount. So the OTA is not quite 90 degrees to the long axis of the SP saddle. And I remembered, while I was out there, that the iOptron works best when it is.

Anyway, that mount's for another project and another time. I'd really like to do astrophotography with the Tak on the original mount - if for no other reason than to be able to say that I can. But also because I have other scopes for AP.

I've posted twice now on the Tak yahoo group asking for info about where to get original accessories (especially a clock drive) for the P2 mount, but I haven't gotten any responses. Maybe a 30-yr old Tak isn't snooty enough against the modern offerings with all the gizmology available today? But there's also the "classic" factor of this scope, which probably needs a classic Tak group to be a better fit.

Or this forum!?

-Tim.
