That Rebel Yell has a way of confusing the issues...

My first scope, a Starmaster Oak Classic with Zambuto mirror. Not quite as venerable as some I've seen in this thread, but wonderfully retro and a great performer.

My black-anodized AP Traveller--as gorgeous to look at as to look through.

Here is one of my "Sacred Cows" mentioned in the 1st post on this thread. It is a 4.25" f/4.1 reflector with an Edmund Scientific "AstroScan" mirror, but housed in a traditional tube assembly. In late 1982/early 1983 I build an English Cross-Axis mount for this telescope. The cross-axis mount idea came from a drawing that I saw in Sam Brown's "All About Telescopes". My mount was done so that a storage box was actually part of the mount support. Everything, including telescope would break down to be carried in the box. The idea was good enough so that it was the featured "Gleanings for ATMs" article in the October, 1983 "Sky & Telescope". It was also pictured in the September, 1983 "Sky & Telescope" being judged by Walter Scott Houston at the 1983 Texas Star Party.

The cross-axis mount, long ago sold, is now replaced by a Celestron CG-4 mount which is just as portable. The telescope itself now has a 1/8" (4mm) tube which is quite nice. Other than that, the tube assembly is essentially unchanged from it's 1983 appearance.

Below is a picture in "cross-axis" configuration back in 1983. I will follow that up with a photo taken a few minutes ago.

Here is a photo of the same 4.25" f/4.1 reflector today.

Another sacred scope that's not a cow!

My 8" f/6 Springfield, built in 1981, outside for comparison imaging with some other 8" scopes, just a few weeks back.

HI, Barry!

Like you, I have more than one *Sacred Cow*. But my sentimental favorite amongst my refractors is the Brandon 94, which I bought new in 1990 (but the photo is from this afternoon). I also have an 8" f/6 reflector at about the same level of *special*, too... They'll be with me to the end...

...and here's the 8" f/6. I've kept it mostly as original, but it has a Novak spider/holder with high quality Antares secondary, and the primary is by Mike Spooner. I did just recently deviate from the as-new theme by adding a 2" Crayford, which has transformed the scope to an utter stunner... It's only an 8", but WHAT an 8"... With a Paracorr (note the relatively rare 1.25" Paracorr in the focuser), the images are pinpoints edge to edge with my 20 or 26 mm Naglers (or any other Nagler, or other similar quality eyepieces). So it's classic, but current, all at the same time... This image was taken in January of this year, before the addition of the 2" 2 speed Crayford that replaced the Telescopics Sky Micro seen in this photo ...
