A Prinz came back !
      #5520413 - 11/15/12 12:38 AM Attachment (79 downloads)

Hello friends,

my new old classic babe arrived. I had one a few years ago and sold it, but ever missed him.
Now I got a new one – a nice Prinz again ! I bought it from a very friendly collectors-friend from UK and the telescope was in overall good condition.
So I had to do only a little refurbishment : I replaced the original ( little bit weak ) tripod with a selfbuilt one made of beech-wood. It’s much sturdier than the original one. I built it with fixed legs, but the nice thing is, that the wooden cabinet from the Prinz is sooo long, that the new legs easily fit in !
I commented on the Prinz 76,2/1250 mm a few years ago here, so it’s not necessary to repeat all things…

The goodies of this scopes are :
- A very long OTA ( no need to pull out such a long thin drawtube as at the Towa 339 for example
- F16
- Focuser with Vixen-style 36,4 mm thread, so you can easily adapt 1,25” accessories
- Very good optic ( this example ! )

As I said the former owner treated this scope very well, so I had only to do little refurbishment.
I cleaned the wooden cabinet and refreshed the paint/glaze. Minor repairmen were necessary
( loosen woodparts have to be new glued ). For better grip I added for example little discreet knobs on the wooden slides, but that are only cosmetic operations – nothing wild.

Overall a nice telescope, that I like very much !

Kind regards from Germany, Michael

Very nice telescope!

Forgive me, but I don't recall, what is the maker's stamp on the Prinz? The 1250 focal length is not the standard used by Royal Astro or Yamamoto.

Is it either of those or something different?

Hello,

and this mount is indeed more stable than the original one...

Kind regards, Michael

Hello friends,

a little update after owning this nice refractor a few years now. I’m still very impressed by its very good optics with nearly no CA, but for practical use I have changed a few things. At first I replaced the original ( Kenko made ) mount ! This mount looks sturdy, but is in fact a very wobbly thing ! I replaced it with a Royal Astro mount of similar size, but the Royal Astro is clearly sturdier ! Interesting : my “Royal Astro” mount is a hybrid out of 2 spare mounts I have : the GEM head is from a Royal Astro mount, but the polar basement is from an Towa 339 mount !
Also I replaced the very weak original tripod with a homebuilt one. I made it from beech wood and it is much more stable than the original tripod from soft wood.

Of course I have stored all the original parts safe in a wooden cabinet, but I do not plan to sell this sweet little keeper !

Kind regards, Michael

Hi Grendel,

I like observing in the old way like our fathers and grandfathers did...
I modified the Towa/Astro Royal mount in two ways :

first I add a kind of turnbuckle-screw to fix the latitude-alignment and second I made an extension for the Dec-lock-knob with a long brass rod. So I can sit on a chair behind the Prinz and can easily turn the scope around the declination.
See pictures - didn't it look like a little Unitron ?

Kind regards, Michael
