The week prior to Christmas i was corrisponding with the seller of a sweet Unitron 114. I've been watching for one lately to add to the collection. One consideration was the wifes reaction to yet another scope in the house. As luck would have it she told me one day she was having a problem finding something i would enjoy for Xmas. Not a problem dear, i know just what to do and I'll take care of it. Perfect.

Regardless of prior approval i just could'nt have passed this one up. Condition is superb and so complete. All the orginal boxes were still there and in great condition. I really like the OTA box. It has a solid top and bottom panel instead of the normal laminated ones. Love the metal Unitron label. I did a little repair to the mount box. The side was split. Easy fix, just take the box apart and glue it then reassemble.

For me this one having a tripod box as well is great. I believe Unitron started packing tripods in cardboard boxes all too soon. All too often they are no longer included.

Obviously this one was bought with the unihex option instead of a diagonal and erecting prism. The white paint has taken on an off white color after 50 plus years of aging. Beautiful, and not a dent or scratch worthy of note. Complete, right down to the caps on every unihex eyepiece barrel. I just couldn't say no.

Objective is also in great shape. When i took it out to clean the inside surfaces were not even dusty. I would say it was always stored properly. As a matter of fact, the focuser, unihex tube, and tripod is about the only use showing areas i could find. Especially the focuser, as if it was used but carefully used.

I really like the little finder. It has double cross hairs. However i would like to take the eyepiece apart and clean it but can't get it apart. The eye lens comes out easy, but the lower lens and cross hair seems to be held in by a pressed in stop. Any ideas?

All the hardware is still there. None of the wings are broken off. Some scares on the tripod legs but nothing too bad. One inner leg is twisted a little. I can live with it.

Hi Gerald- Beautiful scope. The finder eyepiece on my 114 is held together with a threaded ring. It has a couple of notches cut into it and is moveable with my fingernails. Is there any sign of a thread on your eyepiece? If so you could try unscrewing the stop. I see your 114 is newer (70s?) and so the might just be press fitted together, if there isnt a thread visible you could try warming the exterior of the eyepiece with a hair drier and attach a heat sink to the stop and try and get it out that way.

Gotta love those Unitron boxes. I prefer an eq mount but this is so sweet. Weather here is terrible now; snow, sleet, rain. Can't wait to compare this lens to my 128 lens. In the past i've compared the 128 to 3 other Unitron 60mms and a Bushnell. My 128 keeps winning so far. The vintage of this 114 may be some stiff competition.

LOL just realised your Unitron was significantly different to mine and edited my previous post. Differential heating will help to loosen the ring. I am guessing the double cross hair is etched rather than a stretched wire so there shouldnt be a problem with expansion breaking the crosshair.

Now, i would love to hear everyones thoughts on dating this baby. My thoughts are; with the straight lettering, straight slotted screws, nickle plated wing nuts on the mount (no bakelite thumb screws), brass dew shield, and a full complement of wooden boxes; this has got to be very early 60's at least.

Early sixties fits with the butterfly wing nuts and focuser, but what about the cut out in the AltAz mount and the white cap (this might be a later replacement)?

Even the 1956 Unitron catalog shows an altz mount with cut outs and metal knobs on the 114. However the 128 eq did not have cut outs in that catalog.

Johann What do you think about this scope being at least very early 60's ? I kind of wondered about the wing nuts on the cradle. If maybe he just replaced the plastic round nuts. However when i checked the wings nuts by sanding just a little on the bottom it appears to be brass. Makes me think they are original.

There are those gold lettered eyepieces again that were discussed not to long ago. I see now why the gold coloring. These eyepieces are made of brass. After painting the lettering is engraved back into the brass. Very cool indeed.

I bought a 114 in '71 and it had one wooden box only for the OTA and EPs. The Unihex came in a cardboard box with styrofoam. The tripod and mount was simply packaged with the rest. Much the same with a 4" alt-az, except the EPs had their own wooden case. What year do you think your set was made?

Brass eyepieces. Interesting. Should have figured that out if I had looked closer.
I do have a bunch of Unitron gear with wingnuts from 4" sets to 2.4" sets. . I am sure the wingnuts predate the plactic nuts.

I really think its very early 60's at least. I also had a 128 with bill of sale from 1971. It also had a card board box for the unihex. The eq mount was in a wooden box. However it had foam seats inside to hold the mount in place instead of wood / felt. No tripod box.

Gerald,
What a fine scope! I need to start working on the whole naughty or nice thing. I got some very "nice" citrus (mandarin oranges) for Christmas. Now I'm thinking that's just one step up from coal! I could be much nicer!
I have a pretty old mid fifties (?) #114. It has a separate box for the mount and tripod, not separate tripod and mount cases as yours. 62mm on the focuser The OTA bolts to the mount cradle. I would guess yours was produced in the late 1950's/early 1960's. Those solid pine (?) cases really do crack don't they?

My 114 came in a single wooden box that was designed to hold everything- tube, mount attached to tripod, and four eyepieces- all except the Unihex which was in its own box (I guess it was always considered a separate item).

I really like those boxes as well. Is yours slant or straight lettered. I seriously looked at buying a 114 like it. This one being 15 min from work clinched the deal.

Mine has slant letters on the focuser, unihex, and dust cap but the eyepieces have straight gold letters. The box has clasp latches rather than hook latches and it has a black "leatherette" handle. I believe it to be around 1967 or 68, perhaps right at the transition in those slight stylist changes. The spreader has the eyepiece holes also, and the slo-mo knobs and wing nuts on the mount are black rather than silver.

Thats right. And in excellent condition as well. Looks barely used at all. Check out those special made wing nuts. This identical accessory complete with uniclamps is shown in both the 1956 and 1970 catalog. Both list it at 12.75. What no inflation?

I think you have a 153 box. but a latter scope. I do not think the early 1950 scopes had plastic focuser knobs. I could be wrong. If I am, it is the last time I am allowed to be wrong this year.

Sorry Gerald. Looking at all those boxes that have been put up got me confused
Your boxes and scope look like they all belong together.
Once again

Thank you. Thought for a second there i was going to have to debate / defend what i'm sure is an all original package. I'll toast to that.

I have that version also. Everything except the mount box. Also, have that version with metal knobs on the focuser and mount. These are nice scopes. Gerald, I was only teasing in my previous post. Sorry. Happy New Year to all

No, mine made the trip down here from Mich where it was stored in an attic for a number of years. No paperwork at all, that is why I am trying to find a year range based on the box style. Brian

Brian
I recently found an ad in Sky and Tele from Nov 1959 showing a photo with a 114 set up like ours. Black knobs on the focuser and mount controls, metal wing nuts. Earlier ads always show metal knobs on the focuser and mount controls. I think we could call it 1959 or 1960. By Dec of 1961 the ads start showing plastic thumb screws on the mount. pm me if you want a scan.
In another interesting dating issue, Oct of 1961 there is an ad announcing the synchrous clock drive. This issue did not offer pricing on scopes w/drives. In the Nov 1961 issue they did start pricing for this option designating 128C,142C, etc.

Jon I wish mine looked like that. No threads, no slots to turn on. It sure looks to me like it was pressed in. And mine is a double cross hair.
Gerald, I just looked at my finder scope eyepiece, mine has double cross hairs, the top eye end unscrews, but the bottom is held in with a black ring, but the ring has no notches, I cant tell for sure if there`s threads or not. The cross hairs are also inside the eyepiece.
