My Last Classic Scope - Unitron 145C
      #5608827 - 01/06/13 05:04 PM Attachment (122 downloads)

In the last few years, as I’ve gone about obtaining, restoring and using several classic telescopes that I have always wanted to own, one brand on my bucket list just never seemed to come along – an EQ mounted Unitron. They were either too far away, too expensive or in just too rough a condition to go after.

Last year Steve Gorton bought a Unitron 145C here on CN. I regretted not going after it myself and asked him, if he ever decided to sell it, to please give me first shot. Once he found a 4” Unitron he decided the 145C could move on so now it’s mine. It came with the original bill of sale from 1971.

So here it is – My Last Classic Scope. The bucket list is complete for me. No other telescopes need apply.

It is very complete and just needed some minor repairs, touch up and a thorough cleaning. The first area I decided to attack was the tripod tray and sliders. The glue had let go on the tray ribs and the original owner decided to bolt them together with some pieces of angled bracket.

Then I worked on refilling the extra holes that were drilled to mount the brackets. I used a wood filler from Elmers in a Golden Oak color, sanded it and touched it up with a wood stain marker made by Homax in a color called Early American. Then I applied a single coat of Cabot satin polyurethane. You can still see where the holes were of course but it looks a lot better.

Next I went to work on the sliders. The original owner had probably had one of them pop loose or had heard stories of them doing so. So he bent them so they would also wrap around the bottom of the leg pin and bolted them together. They would stay on the leg pin and he did wing nuts where they attach to the tray. I carefully worked them back to their original shape. Left is before, right is after. Two of the slider springs were missing so I fabricated some from some tension springs in 0.026” wire diameter. One of the two shown is an original and one is my copy.

On most of my restorations I like to replace all of the hardware with stainless. But I wasn’t going to do that on a Unitron. Almost all of the hardware is nickel plated brass and is pretty unique. But some of the slider hardware was missing so I had to add some hardware store stuff here. The sliders are actually threaded for the screws. The screws go through the arm from the bottom and are left loose so the slider can slide. A jam nut goes on top to keep the screw from loosening. I had to find new nuts and washers for attaching the arms to the tray as the original owner had put wing nuts here.

I individually hand polished all of the original hardware as the nickel finish was starting to show some surface corrosion. Do not go after these with anything very abrasive like sand paper or even Brasso or you will be through to the brass very quickly. I used Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish and it shined most items up like new.

The sliders and arms on mine are yellow zinc plated and were too far gone to polish. Zinc plating doesn’t polish up anyway and is very thin. So I first bead blasted them. The oval parts are the stoppers for the folding legs, which were also yellow zinc and corroded.

Next it was on to the legs. I removed the leg tips, which were really in rough shape. Some of the nails holding them in pried out OK but on most the heads just broke off they were so rusty.

Clint Whitman had posted that Rustoleum Satin Black, #7777 was an excellent match to Unitron black. So after a coat of Rustoleum primer I applied two coats of that and it is as close a match as you are going to find.

The legs were in good shape, the usual scuffs and such. I cleaned them up with Guardsman revitalizing wood polish. I’ve used this before on my Sears 6344 wood case but it is still amazing how well this stuff can make the wood look new again and hide the scuffs. Here is the same leg before and after.

Then I re-nailed the tips back on using ¾ x 18 brass plated nails. I didn’t want to use solid brass nails as these tips hold a lot of weight. The brass plated ones would be much stronger. Since several of the nails had broken off I turned the tips a bit so the nails would go in at different spots. I pilot drilled the wood with a 0.039” #61 drill bit so the wood wouldn’t split. I used a nail set to tap them home so I wouldn’t damage the freshly painted tips.

Next I went after the wooden cases. Here is the EQ mount box before and after Guardsman. The original owner had pried out whatever nails were going into the interior parts that hold the mount, which are also glued of course. I don’t know what these looked like so I installed some 13/32” nickel plated thumb tacks.

All the box hinges had a lot of surface corrosion. 5 of them were from the mount and OTA boxes and the other four were from older Unitron OTA boxes. The newer ones are clear zinc plated where the older ones are nickel.

And replated. There are three different manufacturers here. The top one, which is early and originally nickel plated, has an oval logo on the back with “Ant” in the oval. The middle one, which was also nickel plated originally, is stamped N.S.B. and Japan. The third one was originally clear zinc and is stamped Arch Japan.

All the black surfaces were cleaned. Everything had a few nicks here and there but not enough to justify repainting. I took some of the Rustoleum satin black, sprayed in into a cup and used it for touch up paint on the satin black surfaces. The green felt was all in great shape but coming loose in a few spots. I reattached these using 3M spray trim adhesive.

The optical tubes had a few nicks so these were touched up with gloss white.

Here is the 10x40 finder and mounts.

Excellent attention to detail. You have done a great job bringing another oldie up to par. Now be a champ and box it all up and send it to me n Australia. It would go so beautifully on my 1877 Gaunt Mount and Pier.

how will that work on the camera end? I thought some sort of small bulb is needed to raise up the actuator on the camera?

You will still have to find a bulb
But that should not be hard to
Find....just finding a red one
Of those little ones for rinsing
Your ear out....till you can find
The real thing....and that would
Most likely be the whole camera.

I am talking about the little bulb that goes on the cemera shutter. Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that was more than just the little hose at that end ?? I understand about the bulb and the operator end.

Thanks for the nice words everyone. This scope really is a beauty.

There is just something about a Unitron refractor that defines the term Classic Telescope. White tubes, black attachments, wood tripod, beautiful design and workmanship, easy to use controls, Just Classic.

But....this.....is.....my......last......classic.......scope.........no, really.......

The bulb and hose for my shutter release are petrified too.

I did some searching for "air shutter release" that turned up some possibilities. Most of what I've seen for cameras have a small unit on the camera end, like a piston in a cylinder, that moves a plunger on the end, like for an old SLR. I suppose you could just cut off the end where the hose ends but, as Johann asked, what do you use for a small bulb at the camera end? Maybe the right eye dropper bulb might work. A medical supply store might be a good place to try.

Hi Jon,
I suspect that the 75 mm tubes were drilled for the 8 x 30 mm finder so that they could be used on the model 142 also. My model 145 photoequatorial also had holes and screws for the 8 x 30 finder. But since I had an extra set of 8 x 30 finder brackets, I put one on (albeit with a Criterion finder, until I can find a Unitron) BTW, beautiful restoration job on your scope!!

I really want to find one of the Deluxe focusers. Steve is killing me with the pictures of the one he just found. It looks like this focuser was optional even on the 145C prior to 1972. Then the 1972 catalog lists it as standard on a 145C.

Well, like Gerald said, my Unitron problems are just starting. And, like Steve (astro140), I couldn't just leave those 8x30mm finder mounting screws with nothing to hold so....I added an 8x30mm finder and brackets.

I had to think a bit about how to re-arrange things. This OTA is getting crowded. Since the 60mm guide scope has only one focuser knob on the right side of the focuser, I decided to move the guide scope to the right side of the main OTA and move the 10x40mm finder to the left. Everything seems a bit more natural to use this way.

I placed a couple of ads looking for a 75mm Deluxe focuser and one nice CN member responded with one for sale. It has Italic lettering which was perfect for my 145C. Shown with the optional 1.25” / 0.965” reversible eyepiece holder.

Thanks Brian. That 8x30mm has a good home.

I thought about turning the focuser shaft but I'm right handed anyway so...

That's great about the nut. We're talking about the round 1/4"-20 one that goes in the leg for the tripod tray right? You already sent me the hex nut up at the base of the mount. I do still need the round one. If you could send one that would be excellent.

PS--what other classic telescopes that were on your bucket list do you own?

The bucket list was:

Sears 6344
Celestron C8 Orange tube
Criterion RV-6
10" Cave
8" Cave
Unitron 145C
Unitron 155 or 166

Oh geeez, did I just add another one?

I finally got around to finishing the reproduction guide scope box. The one for this scope was missing and the chances of finding one were probably slim and none.

So a friend of Steve's, who had also made him a EQ mount box, dupicated one from an original that Steve had. Here it is next to Steve's and still un-stained.

I'm not a wood worker at all. I haven't stained anything in 35-40 years. So I headed to Lowes and picked up the supplies I needed. I picked out what I thought would be a close stain match, a Cabot stain called Brown Mahogany. Unitron stain colors seem to be a bit different on various cabinets I've seen. This color looked like it would match well but turned out a bit too red for my taste. It is fairly close to my original EQ mount box though.

Very nice box Jon. I probably have a dozen little cans of stain in my search for a match. About as close as i have yet is golden oak from Zar. Still a little too dark and too golden. Even tried straight shellac and amber shellac. Still not too close to an original.
Box on the left is refinished (was in bad shape). The others are original. I stained, stripped, restained a tripod section once many times to try and match. Still isn't quite right. Do you know what kind of wood he used? Looks great.

Thanks Gerald. I believe it is African Mahogany. The stain company's samples are usually shown for pine and oak and I'm sure the shades are different for other kinds of wood, how long you leave it on before wiping it off, etc., etc. I probably should have had him send a scrap piece of wood I could practice / test on.

This 145C came with the Styrofoam lined cardboard box for the Unihex. I obtained a wooden box for the Unihex that was in nice shape. Here it is after clean up and some Guardsman polish.

Another view. This camera uses a Thornton Pickard shutter mechanism. The shutter speed is set with the knob toward the bottom and wound up by turning the wing nut shape on top of the shutter spool towards the top. It is tripped by an air operated rubber bladder under the black lever.

As discussed earlier in this thread, the shutter is operated by a squeeze bulb which expends a small bladder under the shutter release lever. Most of these at this age seem to be fairly well petrified. Below is the original bulb, bladder and hose. The bulb and bladder are hardened and would probably crumble if squeezed. The hose and barb fittings on each end are in great shape however.

So I went to work looking for a solution that was as close to the original as I could find. Per some of the earlier posts I bought just about every rubber bulb I could find on the Internet. Shown below in the top row are bulbs in 60ml, 30ml, 15ml, and 12ml sizes. The next row shows a bag of 2ml bulbs, three types of 5ml bulbs and another 30ml bulb. The upper 30ml type would be about the best choice for the squeeze bulb. I didn’t consider it ideal as it is fairly stiff, has a ¼” hole for the hose, which is much larger than the 3/32” fittings on the ends of the hose, and doesn’t look much like original. None of these bulbs was going to work for the expanding bladder under the camera shutter release lever.

The original squeeze bulb has a distinctive lateral and longitudinal rib pattern and was probably much more flexible than the bulbs shown above. So I headed to eBay to search for an “air shutter release”. Several possibilities turned up. The first one I got, from seller ID photogearfinder, turned out to be made in China and did not look like the one in his picture, which was ribbed like the original. I checked with another seller who claimed his was the unit in his picture, which had ribs, and was made in Japan, which was a good sign. This one is shown below with the long hose and spool it comes with. Other than being black, it is almost exactly like the original Unitron bulb. It has the same flexible ribbed outlet as the original and the small green barbed fitting is the same as the originals except for color of course.

Here is the original hose on the new bulb. The green barbed fitting didn’t want to come out of the new bulb so I left it rather than breaking it. If your hose is also petrified or missing, a comparable red silicone hose is available from McMaster-Carr and is shown on the right. Their part number is 5236K62 and is $0.85 per foot.

What to do about the shutter release bladder? This was the big question earlier in this thread. It turns out that Johann’s link to Thomas Scientific was the right track. 1ml (not 2ml) latex bulbs for Pasture pipettes are about the closest thing I can find for the release bladder. I bought a bag from The Science Fair (thesciencefair.com). They call them 1ml Latex Dropper Bulb Teats and are part number 3826-15. They sell for $0.36 each but they have a $10 minimum.

The two shown on the left are as received. I wanted to remove the ring at the end without making them too flexible at the end. I ruined a couple with razor blades and flush cuts. Then I tried sanding one down on a belt sander with a mandrel inserted into the end of the bulb to support it and this worked pretty well. The other problem is they are white. I picked up a package of Rit dye, #10 Wine color, and dyed a couple. I mixed a couple of teaspoons of the dye with ½ cup of hot water. I soaked the red bulb that still has the ring for about ½ hour but didn’t like the purple shade. The trimmed down bulb was in for nearly an hour and it came out a little better. There may be a better Rit color but they didn’t have any other reds at any stores I checked.

This bulb has a 5mm opening in the end, which is much larger than the 3/32” barb fitting. Luckily a small piece of the McMaster hose works perfectly as an adapter.

And installed on the camera. Guess what? It actually works.

I wonder how many years it has been since this camera shutter was last tripped? Apparently the original owner did take quite a few pictures with this back in the day. His family kept the photos he took.

I think I’m going to obtain some film for this camera and give it a go sometime.

After opening it up I found that the Canada balsam that held two of the prisms together had let go. This shot also shows the green felt used as shims on either side of the central prism along with small pieces of cardboard at the top and bottom keeping the prism assembly from moving. Note that the lower piece of cardboard at the peak of the central prism is painted black.

This looks bad but all of the old Canada balsam will clean off easily with acetone. While I’ve never needed to take a cemented lens or one of these prism assemblies apart before, if you need to separate some parts joined with Canada balsam, I’ve read that soaking them in hot water or putting them under a heat lamp will soften and release the balsam.

Canada balsam seems to be a bit hard to find these days. I remember a small bottle coming with a microscope I had in my younger days. Surplus Shed carries it in raw form. I found a 30 ml bottle at Cynmar Corp. (part number CHB80916).

After cleaning both surfaces I applied a few drops and pressed the prisms together. The balsam oozed out of all the edges so I must have used just enough. It takes a while for the balsam to cure. I set this aside for a week on the point of the center prism so that the one that came loose would sit level. After a week I cleaned off the excess balsam with acetone being careful not to use too much nor put too much pressure on the prisms. The balsam probably never cures in the center.

Now we have a pretty clear view through the prism assembly.

The porro prisms are cool. I was fortunate to get one mint that I traded a Parks eyepiece for. Do you have a dark room to go with the camera? What size sheet film do they take? Can you still get it?

Terra,

I don't have a dark room so I'm going to have to put something temporary together for that. I can't see doing film more than a couple of times just for the sake of saying I tried it.

The sheet film is 4" x 5" and is still readily available.

Is that official? No NEAF. I didn't get that memo.
You know you can get what is called a changing bag that is light tight with hand holes. Once the film is in a tank chemicals can be poured in in daylight. Photos through that set up had to be a tough way to go.

Well, you just can’t resist continuing to accessorize these Unitrons.

I was recently able to get a leg cabinet for the 145C. The top and bottom veneer on these cabinets is incredibly thin. The survival rate on these is probably quite low and some legs appear to have originally shipped in cardboard boxes.

Jon
I do have another set of rings that will fit your scope so can install one more scope you install a 40mm unitron like a 127 that would complete your set up.
Besides teasing you that is a beautiful set up

Yes, love those wooden boxes. Excellent find on the tripod box Jon. I have a 60mm tripod box that is the same, pine sides and 1/8" laminate top and bottom. If you ever need material, there is luan plywood available from Winfield Collection that i used for restoring a bad unihex box that matched very well. Shipping was very reasonable as well. Excellent Unitron you have there Jon.

Yes. Some of us love the little 127 and have high hopes of adding one to our collection

Thanks everyone. I'm definitely proud to be the caretaker of this classic.

Johann - I could add another couldn't I? Well, actually not as I don't have enough counterweight now as it is.

Anyone have a threaded Unitron counterweight they want to part with?

Pi/Jon:
For those of us enamored with refractors, those two photos of the scope, equatorial mounted, festooned with rings, finders, guide telescopes and accessories, is wonderfully evocative. It suggests far more than a mere telescope. No, this suggests a scientific instrument even if only for the personal exploration of the universe. The instrument looks busy, with a purpose, just waiting for its owner to take a seat. Very cool. Thanks.

What a wonderful thread. Loved all the pictures. This telescope was my dream scope in the early 60's. Impressive to see all the wooden boxes. Today those boxes to be built and sold would cost a thousand bucks alone. Thanks for sharing.

Jon, just enjoyed re-reading this thread. Nice scope and nice job! I'm speculating the original owner put this white dot on the leg to mark which leg was oriented to North.

Steve

Thanks everyone. It is my pride and joy Unitron at the moment. As beautiful to look at as look through. And all the bells and whistles too.

I agree Steve, that spot probably indicated which leg he wanted pointing north.

I have since been able to upgrade the main cabinets. I now have a nicer mount cabinet and nearly mint leg cabinet. And the guide scope cabinet is now an original Unitron box.

Always a pleasure to look back at this scope. Makes me want to add a 30mm finder to the crowded tube of my 145C, seems like the thing to do. Actually what I really need to do is buy some of that Guardsman wood revitalizer. Looks like it works wonders on the tripod legs. Any trick to using it? Is there a cleaner to use first?

Bob

I think most classic telescope owners do just that........staring and enjoy their collection....staring...turn the focuser knob a few times, some more staring........wiping some dust of the ota,and more staring......yes they look great !.......and when the sky is clear some even bring them out under the stars.....

Thanks everyone. I do get pleasure from it just looking at it sometimes. But it's nice to get it out under dark skies too. There has been precious little of that here this year. My Cave Custom Super Deluxe is the same way. It sits at the front of my garage so even if I don't get to take it out that night it still puts a smile on my face every time I pull into the garage.

Bob, the Guardsman doesn't have any cleaner that I'm aware of. It will dissolve most organic residue though. I just spray it on a soft cloth and polish the wood. It does a great job on the storage cabinets too. Really like night and day in some cases.
