I will be posting pictures as I do restoration and generally talking about this great scope over the next few weeks/months. The scope was purchased at an estate sale. It did not include the counterweight bar, counterweight, box, objective cover, 2x barlow, and manual. Everything else appears to be there and in decent shape. There isn't even much rust on the scope. I believe the red color is from Georgia clay. The objective is dirty and may have a tiny spot of fungus. It will get cleaned either tonight or tomorrow to insure no fungus remains. Other than that it's just a little dirty. Here is a photo of the OTA with finderscopes in the back of my truck.

Here is a photo of the focuser tube fully extended. Note, the reddish color does not appear to be rust but the grease is rather thick so it may be very light surface rust under the grease. Rack and pinion are smooth though a little tight, most likely from the old grease.

I thought the plating guy told me that they copper coat before applying chrome. I'm probably all wet but I can detect a copper color on the ends of my dhrome plated steel rods. Mike

Hi Mark, Your Zeiss 110 is your telescope and you can do with it anything you please. Please be aware that you will probably significantly decrease its value if you chrome the focuser and objective cell. Cheers, Dan

Mike, I'm not a plating expert by any means, but I believe copper is sometimes plated before other decorative coatings are plated on top. It depends on the substrate, the finish coating, and the specs, of course. And if I'm not mistaken, it is often easier to plate more difficult coatings onto a copper surface than to other substrate metals.
Darren, that's a nice looking scope. I look forward to reading about your restoration of this equipment.

Typical "chrome plating" is copper, followed by nickel, followed by chromium.

Thanks Don - I knew nickel was in there too, but I didn't remember the exact progression of metals.

I do suspect it's a bit of copper showing through. Oh well, I will have to deal with that as time permits. Lets get on with some pictures. First off will be a few pics of the scope as found with some close up's of some key parts. Here is the focuser, extended, and finders.

Here are the legs of the pier. Note, not even a speck of rust on any of the bolts. You will not see any rust on any of the scope. Well, not any I have noticed yet. It's still early in the game for this scope.

Here is a close up of finders from side with tiny 'Shower Cap' that was covering a cover on the smaller finder. Why? I don't have any idea why.
