Georgia Estate Sale Tasco 15TEA
      #5630045 - 01/18/13 02:50 PM Attachment (97 downloads)

I will be posting pictures as I do restoration and generally talking about this great scope over the next few weeks/months. The scope was purchased at an estate sale. It did not include the counterweight bar, counterweight, box, objective cover, 2x barlow, and manual. Everything else appears to be there and in decent shape. There isn't even much rust on the scope. I believe the red color is from Georgia clay. The objective is dirty and may have a tiny spot of fungus. It will get cleaned either tonight or tomorrow to insure no fungus remains. Other than that it's just a little dirty. Here is a photo of the OTA with finderscopes in the back of my truck.

Here is a photo of the focuser tube fully extended. Note, the reddish color does not appear to be rust but the grease is rather thick so it may be very light surface rust under the grease. Rack and pinion are smooth though a little tight, most likely from the old grease.

I thought the plating guy told me that they copper coat before applying chrome. I'm probably all wet but I can detect a copper color on the ends of my dhrome plated steel rods. Mike

Hi Mark,
Your Zeiss 110 is your telescope and you can do with it anything you please. Please be aware that you will probably significantly decrease its value if you chrome the focuser and objective cell.
Cheers,
Dan

Mike, I'm not a plating expert by any means, but I believe copper is sometimes plated before other decorative coatings are plated on top. It depends on the substrate, the finish coating, and the specs, of course. And if I'm not mistaken, it is often easier to plate more difficult coatings onto a copper surface than to other substrate metals.

Darren, that's a nice looking scope. I look forward to reading about your restoration of this equipment.

Typical "chrome plating" is copper, followed by nickel, followed by chromium.

I do suspect it's a bit of copper showing through. Oh well, I will have to deal with that as time permits. Lets get on with some pictures. First off will be a few pics of the scope as found with some close up's of some key parts. Here is the focuser, extended, and finders.

Nice subterfuge with the "I may get to the (yawn) estate sale a day late to collect an incredible deal" My quotes not yours. I was like you are kidding! And you were. I have the Sears equivalent model 6336. My legs are numbered 25, 26, 27. Pier #9 in the production line?

I'm glad my pre-buying cheerleading didn't influence the seller. Certainly worth well more than $225 even with the missing CW shaft and weight. And at just $200... Dawg!

I got to work a little on the pier today. The leg numbers are 123, 124, and 125. If they are truly numbered as they came off the line then that would be scope number 41. The chrome bolts holding the legs on are showing copper in places. The leveling bolts show actual rust and at least one is bent. I may cut the bolt and then remove it and replace with new chrome bolts. I plugged the drive in for a few moments and it sounds like it is running fine though I don't trust the old cord that is showing its age. It will be replaced. I'm trying to keep it as close to original as possible but feel the cord is a safety issue and the leveling bolts are detracting from an otherwise great condition scope. Besides, I don't like rusty parts against parts that are not rusting. Did these leveling bolts ever have anything on the end of them? It does not appear they did on this one. I will try to post more pics soon.

Finally got around to disassembling the mount. It's in good shape but somebody really tried to do some adjustments on it using brute strength. Disassembly took a little more time than I expected and my wife believes there is no way I will get it back together but that will not be a problem. First off, thanks to Preston Smith for his fantastic thread on rebuilding a Tasco Mount. Though this mount was not exactly like the one he posted the thread about it was close enough to be of great help. This mount was very dirty. Grease was all over it and it was dried on and caked on and just nasty. The Azimuth slow motion would not turn at all. You will see why soon. The Motor works perfectly though and the gear is fine so things should work well once assembly is complete, hopefully tonight.
I didn't take too many pictures during dissassembly but I do have a few. I will take more pictures during reassembly. Oh well, how can I tell that somebody tried to adjust it with brute strength? Take a look at this picture showing the two bushings. Note one has slight marks from the previous owner trying to turn it and the other is in really bad shape from the previous owner trying to adjust it. The one that looks really bad is also scratched up inside from the previous adjustments.

The difficult issue with this mount is going to be readjusting these to get really good movements out of the RA axis. On the mount that Preston dissected the set screws for these were on the side and bottom of the mount, all accessible without totally tearing the mount down. On this model two of the set screws are on the side and easily reached but the other two are under the Declination setting circle. So, to get to these two you need to take the clamshell off, remove the setting circle, and then you can tighten these. I plan to leave the two inside loose so that the bushings can be turned and then after I get things set well I will tighten the ones on the outside to hold things still until I can disassemble the mount again to tighten the two hidden set screws. In this photo, after I cleaned much of the old grease off of this portion, you can see the hole for the set screw circled in red. Yes, that is mostly old grease on the inside yet to be cleaned out. It had a grease that reminded me of what you would use for greasing bearings and it is old, caked on in places, and really difficult to remove.

Removing the bottom half of the clamshell required removing a set screw and then a ring that held it on. Beyond that everything was close enough to how Preston's mount was assembled to make it easy to use the same directions. Here is a picture with the set screw circled.

Pics of the reassembled mount. Things I noticed. Whomever had this before me did some bad things. I'll tell what they were as I go through. In this first pic there is a small amount of the original felt that came loose and has been folded over. The orange under is the glue that was holding it down, not rust. I will remove this and replace with new felt when I get some. Note where it says Tasco. This piece is supposed to be keyed so that it stays in the correct orientation. The previous owner must have not known how to assemble this as when they put it back together they placed a plate that was for the other side (Visible in other pics) beneath this one and broke the key off. Any ideas how to fix this? I am considering melting some solder into a ball on the correct location then carving it to form a new key but I don't know if that will be strong enough.

The RA pointer was bent. I corrected it to a degree but didn't want to try to bend it back to perfect as I don't want to stress the piece. It seems solid enough.

Here you can see where a portion of the origional felt was removed to gain access to allow disassembly of the mount. You can see that it is much cleaner. Good news now is that both RA and Decl slow motion controls are working fine.

I reassembled the pier last night. I have not replaced the leveling screws yet, still have the old ones in, but I have everything where I can do a first light on this scope now. I believe I may have an easy way to make a perfect 1.25" adapter for it too. The draw tube is very close to the same diameter as a 1.25" eyepiece. For this reason, I believe I can just use a bit of 1.25" inside diameter plumbing tube to make an easily removed adapter. If it works I'll post pics in the next few days.

Not quite done but getting there. Here it is assembled ready to use. Note: Clock drive is not mounted. Also, old clothes used for working in. (No, those are not my Sunday best.

A beautiful scope. Where's the counter weight?

Unfortunately the counterweight was lost long ago by the origional owner. I'm going to have to start looking for a suitable replacement soon. I'll check the threads on a few mounts I have here to see if any fit. Once I find which will work I can work on finding a replacement counterweight assembly. It should not prove to be overly difficult.

Great restoration job Daren. If you can't find a replacement it's very easy to buy a steel rod of the diameter that will fit a modern counterweight like a celestron. Have a machinist turn one end of the rod down to the diameter of the hole on your RA shaft and cut a thread on it. Then drill and tap the other end to put a safety bolt and washer on so the weight never slips off onto your toe. Materials, five bucks not counting the counterweight. 20 minutes at most on a lathe and your done.

Thanks. It really wasn't much of a restoration, more of a cleaning and regreasing. There are some paint spots that could be touched up and the tubes could be whiter but other than that this scope started out in great shape. I already had a sun projection screen (Newer I'm sure) and I agree Terra, the counterweight system should be easy to replace. I would have like the origional though as it's a very slick system based on what I have seen in other threads on this model scope and the 20TE. I cannot wait to take a look through it. I'm presenting some ideas for some new products to some senior VP's in my company today (AT&T) but after that I will be ready to get home and get ready to look through this scope for the first time.

Here is a picture showing the bubble level that this came with. Of note, some of the older Tasco mounts came with an altitude adjuster bolt in this same location. I wonder if the attachment is the same? This one uses two screws to hold the level on.

And another view of this piece on the mount from before cleaning this mount up... Sorry I don't have one showing the screws from underneath. I will try to get one up tonight or tomorrow morning...

Hey Mike,

Still no movement on my 15TEA (I know pathetic eh!). But at least my life has settled down since my last real participation here which has been just under a year. It's been a long haul.

I lurk in the background about every couple of days so I have seen some of the cool posts. Don't really have much to add so I just watch.

I'm still awed at the experience in this forum.

Cheers,
