Mark Kuba aka Napersky had heart surgery on friday. The procedure went well and he is in intensive care and will soon be back home recovering. Mark has way to many projects in the works to stop now. Soon we will be seeing more posts on his interferometer, his Unitron, his 1920's Zeiss, and of course his new AP Superplanetary. See you soon Mark!

I just spoke to Mark and while he is getting better it was a very difficult time and there were complications that required another trip to the OR and he has been in great discomfort. He will be in rehabilitation for about 2 weeks and then be at home about 12 weeks before returning to work. His vision has been affected by high blood pressure and he hopes it can be improved with treatments. So while it was a very difficult first few days the surgery was literally a life saver as his condition was very bad and he was not aware of this until his last doctors visit. So it will be considerably longer than expected before Mark is active in the hobby again but he will be back and posting here on CN. He was very happy and appreciative to hear of the well wishers here in the classics forum.

So sorry to hear about this! Hang in there Napersky Mark, all will be better in no time! Your diet will change dramatically, and you will eventually gain back your strength for full recovery - this is my second year anniversary after my own heart attack with complications and following 2-week stint in intensive care; with many doctor visits thereafter. But after this all passes, you will feel as good as new, and healthier to boot.

I talked to Mark and he is doing much better. He has not had any internet accesss. He thinks he will be able to return home Saturday but it will still be a while before he can become active again. Also his vision is affected but still he hopes that can improve. I'm hoping we may hear from him here by the later part of the weekend.

Thanks Darren for the thread and for everyone's kind wishes and prayers. The surgery was indeed life saving. 14 months ago I end up in the hospital with a 500 blood sugar count after a routine 6 month blood draw for my high blood pressure. The ER doctor back then ordered an EKG as I responded yes to mild chest pain. The EKG failed as a fluke, my electricals were fine and subsequent EKGs but this triggered my Cardiologist to order an Echo Doppler the next day which revealed two things.
First I had a congential condition of 2 leaflets instead of the standard 3 in my aortic valve. Second Severe Aortic Stenosis. The pressure gradient was a 44, 40 being severe.
The Cardiologist said that I would need to retest every six monnths. The next test the presuure gradient rose to 48 and the test I had a few weeks ago showed accelerationn to a 59. Surgery and valve replacemennt was necessary immeidately, I was given 1 week to get my affairs in order.
The day before the surgery I had an angiogram which confirmed the aortic stenosis but revealed that my cornary arteries were "excellent" so no additional bypass surgeries were necessary. Thanks to 12 years of my mom's Cardiologist's care with Crestor and hight blood pressure medicine.
I am home now recovering, my cousins showing themseleves to be closer than brothers to me, as I have no siblings. I am only on one blood pressure medicine instead of the usual four and my blood pressure is excellent almost unbelievable.
The fluke failed EKG and subsequent diagnosis of aortic stennois and valve replacement saved my life I might not have lasted another 6 months.
I really should change my screen name to "Swine Heart" as I have a pigs valve now.
Wonderful to see the replies from all my online friennds.
My eyesight is really really bad as the high blood pressure from the stenosis burst blood vessels in my retina. However I expect all to return to normal after a course of treatment.
For a while there is no telescopes or lifting more than 5 lbs per arm. I am happy to be home.
Mark

Great to hear of your recovery! +1 on Braveheart, after going through that valve replacement! Hearing that your coronary arteries were in such good condition puts icing on the cake. Hang in there and the stars will be at your command again before you know it!

Saw the Cardiologist today, he said that the blood pressure levels I am experiencing will fade and go back to bad again. So I will have to start walking daily, lose weight and learn to eat like a bird..perhaps I can mitigate the future return of the high blood pressure. It sure is great to have normal readings like a kid.
Breathing is labored though, no pneumonia but build up of fluid in the lungs after surgery ask Darren Drake it can be hard to talk.

nothing like life changing events to put things in perspective mark. you can get that diet going with a little self motivation things will fall in place. i lost quite a bit when i went through my divorce and my life did not depend on it so you can do it easier than i did. get recovered first then you will find the rest easy. were so close to each other we Need to have a AP And Zeiss Shootout... You can do it. When they told me I had gout they were ready to drug me up. I changed my life style, started eating very healthy and have been very happy since. It is amazing what we will do when our survival instincts kick in. God bless you to good health and clear sky observing.

I just talked to Mark minutes ago. He had treatments for his vision and it it 100% improved. He may have to have more treatments but he was lucky as he was told he almost lost vision in his right observing eye. He is going to get a ride now to get a haircut which is basically his first time getting out to do something. He hopes to be driving within a couple weeks. I offered to when he is ready to come out with a friend and do all the lifting and set up the AP superplanetary. He was excited about that. He starts very light tread mill workouts tomorrow. For now all he really can do to improve is eat and sleep. Soon though he should be slowly becoming more active.

Thanks for the update Darren.
Mark, a healthy diet and an active lifestyle is something we must not neglect. Once you start you won't be able to stop and you'll feel and look so much better. Last year I started running 15-20km a week and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. It was really hard at first but now I crave it and can't go more than a few days without it. It's like a drug! Good luck and I hope you get back to observing with your new AP refractor soon.

Just had a nice evening with Mark, Sean Cunneen, and mirror maker Dan Joyce. It was Mark's first real social night out since his surgery. He's feeling much better these days and down 15 lbs. Soon we hope to get Mark back to some observing and to his projects in time. Sean has some cool projects in the works also as many of us know as well and tonight was a blast catching up on all this good stuff.

Yo Bros:
I'm supposed to be feeling better but truth is am not there yet. Slept the entire day Monday and last Thursday had no choice completely out of my control.
Brestbone still hurts but I cannot take pain pills or I would do nothing but sleep. Brestbone should not hurt but I had two surgeries, the valve implant then a second ripping the chest open to stem internal bleeding.
Soon I'll have a group over to observe thru the 6" Superplanetary to see it's quality. Thank God Rolland is alive and close by. I want nothing but perfection from this scope.

Thanks folks and Mikey Cee was right I looked very bad for a couple of years because I was very sick. Now the problem is fixed and it's only and upwards trajectory! On the mend and will be better than ever.
Thank you also Fred and Steve.
Eyes were going due to high blood pressure, it got so bad I could not even read! Today the right eye tested 20-20 and the left 20-20 minus 1 (corrected of course), can't remember when they were so good.
BP averaging appx 130/70 and with regular exercise should get even better. My eye appointment 1 month ago the doctor said I was nearly at the point of losing vision in the right eye.

Yes, I feel I have been literally "born again". Not in a religious sense but a physical one. The surgeon said it was good that I had the surgery done when it was the valve was "highly calcified", I was at death's door.
