Congratulations Brian!! I assume you sold some of your other scope to pay for this one. Can`t wait to hear your report.
Dan

actually i sold some scopes to help my daughter find a place to live...was going to purchase a place in a mobile home
park then my ex agreed to pay half (my money) for a apartment so i had some cash left over..
almost sold the astro physics ...really glad i did not
have to....guess things work out in the end.
this Zeiss lens is a 1959 and since all the other parts
are atm,and a good job by markus...i really do not feel the need to try and
bring it back to that time period style wise.
will get a report as soon as possible.
broke a rib this weekend so i will have to let that heal
some before working on this.

That is really cool Brian. It's truly an amazing scope. There are yard cannons. You've got a yard howitzer there. I can't believe how long it is. I can't wait to see it mounted. What's the total length from dust dap to diagonal?

Have you thought of a Universal Astronomics Unistar heavy duty? They are really stable, I have my 6 inch refractor on one and the ota fully loaded is 25 lbs. of course the added length of your scope will bring with it some major torque issues. Still, you might want to talk to Larry at UA.

Congrats. Hopefully the new telescope curse won't hit. I've had it since Christmas. Scarcely a clear night that's not well below freezing.

fully extended from tip to tip is 92"
closed it is 70"
it fits in my AP Case Real nice with room to leave finder
and cradle on so i just have to copy that one somewhat.

now i am figuring at my 6'1" height i want the eyepiece
at about 60" with telescope at 45 deg.
so from ep to cradle center i have about 42".
i am going to roughly need about 84" from ground to
cradle center for comfortable viewing.
thats why i will build a custom mount and tripod for this one.
i have a 7' pier in the backyard and will try things on that
before i build my tripod and mount...this is going to be a tall one.

That is one fantastic looking scope. You will have to let us know how stars look (CA wise and contrast) in comparison to your Astro Physics 6" Super Planetary. It will be a great shoot out, very long FL vs a legendary AP Super Planetary. I'm glad you didn't have to sell the AP also, though, I was really getting tempted to purchasing it myself.

why not mount it on a 4" unitron mount. That should be tall enough. With the wood legs if it is not tall enough it should be easy to make longer legs or leg extensions. I bet that scope would look beautiful on a Unitron mount.

Having started in Ohio, then moved to Wisconsin, I can understand fully the weather issues in that part of the country. I worked for a couple years for a company that had me in Detroit area often to work on telecommunications equipment for Ameritech. Though I would move back to the midwest in a heartbeat for the fishing and many other things that I miss dearly one thing I do not miss is the weather. Often terrible seeing with some very cold tempuratures and snow. That part of the year makes it really hard to get out and enjoy this hobby, even with good clothes for the weather.

thought about bidding on that unitron clone yesterday..
but then thought ....been there ..i want something different
for this one.
mind you unitrons are beautiful mounts...maybe if i could find a set of 5" tripod legs...like thats going to happen.

I hear you Brian. I used to be based out of DTW when I was an FA with Northwest Airlines. I could always count on it being warmer when I was home down here in Cincinnati but the Ohio Valley sits under clouds most of the winter, and when they clear out, its usually too darned cold at night. While a little warmer, the seeing wasn't any better. I do a lot of solar observing just because it's a little warmer; but still I had to get a Kendrick heater for my h-alpha filter to keep it on band, and we've had so much cloudy weather even solar hasn't been good this winter. I've only been out a couple of times, day or night since Thanksgiving.

When it comes to obeserving temp a bunch of us engineers have come up with the theory that seems to hold up every time we have tested it.
the lowest temp you can tolerate is directly proportional to your age. For me it is time to move to FL. I hear Jupiter FL has some of the best seeing in the country.

only thing i have around with a dovetail
mount.
the tube is a odd size...4.7+ OD.
going to need some AP (47ring) rings to mount it on my 800.
