Craigslist, ebay and other vintage scope ads.
      #5787510 - 04/09/13 07:35 AM

This is a continuation of the previous thread. Im locking the older thread but will keep it on for a couple of days.

A few reminders :

1) do not post your own ads or the ads of your friends. This is considered sale promotion in the open forums and this is a violation of the CN TOS. Please post such ads in the S&S forum or the CNC.

2) do not post photos from ads unless you have the permission of the person who took the photo. If you must have some reference to the photo in the post, then post a link to the photo, not the photo itself.

3) do not post the entire ad text (or large blocks of it) without permission from the author.

4) try to concentrate on the item for sale and not the seller.

5) Buyer beware - there are some scams floating around, so do your homework before responding to any ad.

6) CN is in no way responsible for the content of these linked ads.

Best regards and clear skies.
Rich (RLTYS)

Yes, I'm not sure what to make of it. The plate on the case gives a name of 'Clarkson's Optical Stores' at 388 High Holburn but whilst I can find some mention of either Clarkson's Optical Stores or Clarkson's Secondhand Optical Stores on the interweb the address is always given as 338 High Holburn

eg here or here or here

It seems from this notice in the London Gazette from 1909 that Clarkson's originated from the Clarkson side of the partnership of Broadhurst, Clarkson and Towns. According to this site, when Broadhurst and Clarkson fell out with each other, Broadhurst moved to 63 Farringdon Road, EC1, naming the building Telescope House but trading as "Broadhurst Clarkson & Co. as Clarkson had a top reputation and Broadhurst wished to trade on it, as well as wishing to annoy Clarkson.

Terra

Some are good, some are bad, I think it is true to say that quality was more variable with the D8 than with Celestrons. From what I've read Criterion did not match the secondaries to the corrector unlike Celestron who refined the figure of the secondary to compensate for any irregularity in the corrector and this may account for the greater variability but I don't know for sure.

They also seem to benefit from fettling, getting the corrector and secondary centred and the primary squared up - see for example, Andy Taylor's post in Cats and Casses, "Dynamax 8 - from a pigs ear to a silken purse... " And cool down time can be longer than an orange tube.

Mine seems to be a good one (maybe because I've refrained from touching the optics - a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing) and has virtually none of the usual SCT image shift, unlike my orange tube C5. But I think in a blind testing you would spot which was a D8 and which was a Zeiss!

Interesting difference in production numbers, serial numbers would suggest Celestron produced upwards of 25,000 C8s by the end of 1981 whereas Criterion produced either around 3,600 or 4,600 over the same period, depending on whether they started numbering from 0001 or 1000.

James

I did actually buy an old Dynamax 8" SCT about a year ago that was on Craigslist for $50. I just had to see if it was as bad as most of the reviews said. As purchased, it was everything I expected...junk. After a half day of aligning and adjusting the optics, It compared quite favorably to a friends C8!

Thanks to Dan for suggested price range, on which I relied for my offer. He & I both agree that it was more likely a 10", and that they were measuring the tube diameter.

Great list, Jason, thanks!

I notice that the Unitron and 10" reflector deal appears to include a bullhorn; perhaps a little something to draw attention to one's self and scope during public events...

Hmmmm... the mention of a "cult-like following" that the 6" Dynascope has attained tells me that the seller might have been reading this forum at one time, wouldn't you say?

That next-to-last listing has been on CL several times in past months, and is a reasonably-priced, effective and beautiful instrument; surprised that one of our Florida members hasn't given it a good home yet.

I do love to see people's pets who wander into frame, such as the cute and furry kittycat who's quizzically looking up at the scope in the final listing!

Fred

Someone up in Chicago or around the western Great Lakes needs to go rescue that Unitron 140 with Unihex for 600 bucks. You can garage sale the rest of the stuff to help pay for your gas. It's a deal!!!

Dave:

You probably wont get a response, it's the one I bought last week.
Saw the ad, contacted the owner, drove up and back the following day.
It's a very good scope, lots of little extra's like some brackets, etc.
I've started to refinish the legs today but I find that I am missing one of the metal clips on top of the center section of the tripod that holds the spreader bar.
All in all a good scope at a good price.

Kind Regards,

Ron

Interesting.... I also collect cars and get great enjoyment out of ferreting them out. The parallels between the car hobby and astronomy hobby are so similar that it's scary. The difference being cars (foreign cars at least)tended to be sold in the larger cities where service and parts were readily available whereas scopes -probably- were not sold near a big city due to light pollution (even back then). Makes it difficult to find things. I lucked out on my 8" Edmund (not sold to a collector/user who will due it far more justice than I ever could) which was part, so I was told, of the Elgin School District back in the 60's.
Chicago, being the home of Sears - including their outlet stores- probably had a lot of their sc
opes sold here but Unitron, Cave etc. I don't think so.

Hi Fred,

Yep, that Ed 6" looks to be in good condition. The setting circles appear to be the thicker plastic version and no clock drive. What is there, including the original finder looks nice. Both counterweights, both pipe bored, no pipe which is a simple hardware fitting.
If the optics are good then the deal is a good one. I wouldn't sell one of mine for that, but both have clock drives. I'm thinking $200+ with a clock drive and refurbish when I get around to it. I believe all the RA shafts are the same, with or without drive, and all the RA housings are machined on the end to take a clock drive clamping. Once the retaing ring is removed from the end of the RA shaft, there should be enough length to put on a drive.

Both of my Ed 6" RA shafts are 6" long from the base of the DEC housing to the end.

Hi Neil! Yes, I really thought about getting it, but I'm full up right now (translation: the living quarters are at their maximum scope density!) $100 is a great price for that scope, and clock drives do show up on occasion for right around $100, so the total would be right in the price range you mentioned.

I had one of these 13.1" that would clearly show mars ice caps and Saturn ring split while Saturn looked like it was surrounded by moons. Has a great mirror. Very rare for a coulter to be this good. Should have made a truss tube dob out of it. Regret selling that scope.

Interesting looking scope. The mount doesn't look older than the 50s, though, and I think Broadhurst Clarksons were made in some form even more recently than that, assuming the mount is original to the OTA.

I should have looked at the rest of the pics. I searched for "charles frank ltd eyepiece" and found he'd published a book about astronomy in 1959. Also, plastic cover on the mount. So, I'd guess definitely in the late 50s or into the 60s even.

On CN Classifieds:

Edmund Scientific 6" f/6 red-tube reflector on fork mount

A little pricey, I think, but then again they didn't make too many of these 6" models, plus they're really steady on those mounts, which were designed primarily for the 8" scopes; plus there is the wow factor, in that they just look cool Guess we shall see what the market will bear.

Needless to say, I don't know, and am not, the seller.

Those fork mounts are awesome for appearance. The 6" and 8" tend to sell for about the same since the 6" is harder to find. The 6" was made for a short periond, a year or less.
Still, $500 is high end pricing. I'd consider that a top end figure for one that better be loaded and in the condition described to be worth it for an end user looking to get one (IMO). I have at least two of the 6" (maybe more parts as well) and I'm only keeping one. I'd never sell as high as 500 even after a refurbish.

Many people are ignorant of scope values. A lot of the insane high prices are sincere in expectation and born from a total lack of knowledge. I've had many people work with me on prices after I've shown them my credentials, and sometimes online references. I've even noticed price changes on scopes that I had absolutely no interest in, and I've received Thank You mail from some sellers that I've helped out by giving them a realistic price range.

I stopped by a garage sale and the seller had a Dynamax 8 (yes, I know I know). They knew nothing of it, but it was complete with accessories and trunk and in the best condition I'd ever seen. A blue beauty. They knew nothing but it sure looked spetacular and was mechanically smooth and functional to a novice (the flop was horrid), stored for close to 20 years in the trunk. The price was $2,000! I explained their infamous history, and showed them several online discussion and sales typically around the $300 mark. I also explained that they had something close to a true New Old Stock D8. They sold it to me for $200 with the accessories distinctly worth most of that, primarilly because of my honest open documented disclosure.

I'm currently helping some folks North of town with a big C8 Deluxe, including some basic imagers (DSI first version, and another), and some Tele Vue. I told them about CN and AM, caution with EB. They had already done well with an accurate $1200 for this area. We went through things with a few phone calls. They then asked me what I would like to get it all for. I told them they should stick with the original figure because I already have my foot in the door with bargain basement deals and insight, and they should do better than what I could offer. They've kept in touch with pieceing out some Tele Vue and CCDs (happy campers so far). I also informed them of how to keep a basic package instead of stripping the scope to a bare bones offer. This will help their final sale potential. I've recieved thank you letters from them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the grab of a "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME" underpriced mind blower, but I'm not out to rip off grandma. It's gut feeling, Karma, and individual to the situation. I've yet to put a string on two purchases, about a month apart, that happened to involve the same estate group. It was a deja-vu for us both on the second scope. The first was a Celestron-Vixen C80 on Polaris, nice for $100. The second (two days ago) was honestly the nicest Celestron-Vixen C4.5 Polaris I've ever seen loaded with optional Vixen accessories like drive control, immaculent circle V orhtos, catalog, more I'm still going through and an OTA that seems perfect with no hint of any mounting mark dimple or scratch. $150 and I doubt it would have lasted to the 1/2 price day.

I sleep well on all accounts.

i've looked two samples of the Park...wait a minute, I've looked through at least one 60mm and two or three 80mm. They are late examples of Japanese made refractors with associated mounts and accessories. Sometimes a 'later' version of a manufactured product means they improved on the weak areas, and sometimes it means they reduced quality to try to squeeze out more profit margin.

With the Parks it was a general overall improvement. I forget if the lenses had collimation screws, which I would want any scope I wanted to keep to have. Other than that, nice optics, and nice mounts. The mounts may look like a typical EQ mount, appropriate for the size of the scope. Well, I never liked the EQ 1, 2, & 3 mounts. Compared to say a Vixen Polaris, they are all wobbly and lack precision motions. But, within the class of mounts, the Parks EQ 1 for the 60 and EQ 2 or was it a 3 for the 80mm had some evolutionary improvements. They were sturdier, less backlash, less prone to vibrations that you typical vintage scope of the same size.

Now, value? Consider you could by a pretty good vintage scope, make that 5 vintage scopes for a fraction of the Parks price. But, looking only at functional value, setting aside any cache or collectible value of a vintage scope, I would value the Parks as slightly but definitely 'better" than you typical vintage refractor. I would compare them with 1990's Vixen, always good quality. But, in real life, they usually sell at a discount. Maybe some new-old-stock will start showing up for sale? If not, this post may increase the value. (I gotta stop doing this! Or at least wait until I stock up on what I praise!).

Littlegreenman

* How can you tell if a mount is and EQ 1, 2, or 3? It's easy to tell between a 1 and a 3, but between a 1 and 2 or a 2 or a 3??

I haven't had a chance to scope out the Parks but its a late model Towa including the circle T trademark. Made for Parks with "Parks" painted on both sides of the tube. I hope it has hand picked lenses or something exciting like that. I would think Towa would hand pick lenses for Parks Optical wouldn't you? if I was taking nature photos for Nat geo I would make sure they are in focus!
It came with a Parks hybrid diagonal and a Parks 1.25" K12mm which is a nice feature. It may have come with 3 eyepieces since it has places for 3 in the Styrofoam, I only have one with it. Its missing many parts, and a few of the missing parts would make it difficult or impossible to use.
The cell has no collimation screws and the lens has the ring style spacer as far as I can tell.

Robert

I've heard these combination Newt/Cass models had optics that could be, shall we say, somewhat less than perfect. Even with superb optics, though, $2500 is much too high a price.

Looks to be in great condition. It's a cute little scope but one of what I consider an impractical aperture. Would be a collector's item, but one that would no doubt spend the vast portion of its life either in a box or in the corner of the living room. That's why I ruled it out. That and the fact that I would not pay that price for such a small aperture telescope, just to have it.

After all, I already have a 40mm Unitron........... A finder

I sent the seller a note to post some pictures of the primary and asked what size it was. At $450 that would be a fair price but $850 is bit much. It is a heavy scope that needs to be pier mounted and it is in rough condition plus Tinsley's are not known for having great optics. I know I had to redo a 24" and there was history posted about the company were they were sued for there lack of optical quality.

Dave...I think buyer got the brandon
Eyepiece set in the deal.
Granted not in the greatest shape
but usable.
He might get lucky and just need
A recoat on optics and have
A great scope.
Betcha that one is a backbreaker.

I wish the newer owner the best of luck with it. Looks like he got three old Brandons, the 4, 8 and 16 ones and a Questar eyepiece plus two of the original Tinsleys. As you said they look rough. Hopefully they will clean up well. If you know the new owner and he wants some help checking out the optics I'll be happy to help.

All the Best,

The mind boggles at what the winning bid would be!

With me, it seems everything I want is at the other end of the country and shipping is either too expensive or the potential damage from shipping too great to contemplate!

Yep, the thought of what damage a courier could do dropping one from height doesn't bear thinking about.

In all fairness, the scopes I got from eBay were very well packed. I couldn't have done better or wished for better. It probably helped that they came from conscientious fellow amateurs who would have wished the same treatment for themselves. We have just heard a horror story about the extreme lack of care (or utter incompetence) exhibited at least by some individuals that pack and ship at Goodwill, but that is another thread. Ouch!

Re: Tinsley 8 new [Re: DAVIDG]
      #5830759 - 04/29/13 05:29 PM

That new owner of the Tinsley is me. It was just shipped off this morning by USPS mail. That in itself is scary.

I have not taken on a real good restoration project in quite some time. So, I figured this will be a nice summer project. I have no need for the 3 brandons and the Q80-160, so I will be using those to offset the cost of the Tinsley. Shipping was included in the 850. Maybe I can get $200 for the eyepieces (really rough condition), and have some restoration funds. I was willing to take the risk for the money. I have also been looking for a long FL DK for imaging, so if the optics are serviceable this will serve that purpose too.

I will start a new thread once it arrives. The interesting part is that I just had the auction marked as "watch". Then, at about 8:25pm on Saturday night I viewed the auction and he had changed the description just 2 minutes earlier saying he had added the 5 eyepieces and to make an offer for BIN. I thought $850 was fair, offered it, and it was accepted a few seconds later. It could well be $850 wasted...let's hope not.

Steve

PS, the last scope I bought was a first run 10" LX200. When it arrived, water flowed from the box. The scope was filled with water and the control panel was shot. The optics appeared damaged beyond belief. Every part that could be rusty, was. I suspect the scope had been outside in the rain for several years. It would be nice to have unexpected pleasure on the Tinsley.

There should be a method where astronomer buffs can organize local/national/international means to respond across the country and across the ocean Ebay deals and those others.
I see constantly "pickup only" and wonder just the loss the seller assumes with that very simple statement!
For I then wonder whether I have or a relative or friend nearby to accept for securing, and means where I may acquire and take possession at a later date...?
Wrong place, wrong time and never happens tho!
Could there be a broker, a person designated for placement in escrow and to await a method for transport?
With safe storage and packing with a reputable shipping company, or personally driving a rental van to safe delivery to the new owner?
Can this be the means?
A data base listing and a percentage of fee's of course.

That's a nice looking scope, alright. Sadly, with goto scopes available nowadays just about everywhere, the old pushtos don't fetch the kind of money the seller is asking. Even half the asking price is probably pushing it, but not by much, if it's in good condition.

I have an Optical Craftsmen 8" f/6 with a George Clement mirror in it. It's one of my best performers.

I was told it was done by the previous owner so he could mount other scopes on the Unitron mount and that it was completely removable. But the Unitron mounts with the attached cradle that I have seen have a bit of a 'snout' to the bottom of the cradle so I'm not sure that piece is really removable.

12 hour days again.
Maybe off today for snow, sent inguiry to see Tak in person.
I'm not interested, too many scopes, too little time.
IF IF IF I can see it, I'll want a phone contact while I'm looking at it. I'll do the basic basics, but I'm not a Tak man.

I need to finish posting the Edmund restoration, then I have a person knocking the door down for one of my RV-6s, and I just found out one of my RV-6s mount and pier is for an RV-8. Now I have to revamp my keeper concept. I don't have an extra set of legs, but I do have an extra GEM. My RV-6 will sit on a pier with the 8's moon pad legs....
OK, another string for this, needing RV-X input.

Oh, I could also ship the Tak for some one, but don't know when I can get it after drilling starts again.

Way too rich for my blood. I don't buy classic ep's (or any ep's for that matter) for the same money that would get me a fairly nice classic telescope, but for those of you with more pennies than I, heres a nice rare low power/wide field Masuyama:

Just woke up (yeah, late!). I replied before reading this post.

I've somehow wound up being a Tak Man. It all started when I answered an ad for the NJP for sale and bought the guy's EM-10 as well. Loved them so much that when the EM-500 came up for only $4K (non-goto, though), I drove all the way to Colorado Springs to pick it up! Then the gods noticed I had Taks, and put the FC-76 in that pawn shop on my way to Utah, so I'd have to swing buy and pick IT up!

So I guess I should bid?

-Tim.

Anybody interested in the TAK, send me a PM. I need a contact number to call when I'm looking at it. I have today off.

I sent a question, through the ad, on how to look at it today. I'm still waiting for a reply. I don't do ebay and I don't know any other way to find out about seeing it, besides waiting for an ad response to my inquiry.

It's snowing and ugly. Transportation to see it is going to be ugly, and I won't do rush hour (I'm country hick). Waiting for sellers response on seeing it, and weighing that against driving in this stuff to do so.

Any information (if I get there) will be shared here, NO exclusive observations. This is for all CN interest in this forum.

Time is tight so I'll call a PM number. A good Tak man is the best choice. And as I type this, that snow is looking seriously BADDDDDD for getting around.

This is the sort of thing you wanted to see happen Starman?
Short notice, but lets get something going here.

I know they do not make that OTA anymore either. I will keep a close eye on the bidding to see if I want to jump in. I have a rough idea of what it is worth.

Orange Tube C8

This is on Craigslist. Poor quality pics but the tripod is not the triangle locked one, but something with round black legs. What tripod I'm not sure. A few ? eyepieces. Listed at $600. The price of these has been trending upward. Tempting but I have enough toys right now.

Orange Tube C8

That tripod is a good version. Original on some later scopes. This one has the far better side clamping knobs for the leg extentions. Unfortunately, it is missing the speader assembly that rides up and down that center dropped tube, a major missing item.

I tried to buy the cass when it and several other OTAs were up on ebay. Just couldn't conclude the sale: I'd agree on his price and then that wasn't good enough. Then the big cass "wasn't there" to inspect. And who's selling the stuff, the kid or his parents. Just not worth the aggrevation.

The kid thinks because hid grandfather spent years making the stuff that it is worth lots of money. It sounds like the mirrors were home made. Maybe if we spend the time educating him it might be worth it. However, without some sort of documentation on the quality of the optics it is a gamble.

With the exception of the finder, it's pretty much identical to my 1960 Swift 831. The objective cap is just like the the one on mine. It should be an excellent performer. Eikows are very nice but the legs are too flimsy for the mount (as they also are on the Swift).

Yes. Wanting to buy something isn't enough. You have to want to buy from that particular seller. I lose interest in a seller (or buyer!) who raises red flags by not answering questions or through a lot of other behaviors.

Remember, these will always be another opportunity to spend your money, coming soon!

Here's a good one. Sears 6344 for parts. Not sure I've ever seen one for sale with the objective cell disassembled. This one just shows the back half still on the tube:

I just spent a whole bunch of folding greens, or I'd do it. I know how to restore these now!

Tinky before:

Tinky after!:

It's even velvety!

I'd love to restore a tricolor C-14 someday, but fortunately for my wallet, I've never seen one for sale before.

I don't about that either. There seem to be 3 pieces missing, at least not pictured. I have a 6344, and the 6 pieces of foam fill the box even when the scope is removed.

If all it needs is cleaning then I could see this being well worth anything under $200 easy. Unfortunately, there is some unkown. The cosmetics have to need only cleaning with no gouges or dents (some scratches expected, nothing serious), the optics have to be good as claimed, the mechanics need to all work from focus to RA to DEC and locks and all, and the electronics should be confirmed. I also did not see the dust cover which is quite architectual compared to the bland blanks today, and probably not easy to come by.

This is going to have some intrisic value. It is an early sand cast arm small base. The portability is very attractive and I've had a LOT of comments about that aspect. What will boost the intrinsic value the most will be the condidition only needing a cleaning within some reason.

I am not the seller (of this one) and do not know the seller or have any involvement. I have my own one to deal with. Here's mine locked triangle, wedge, trunk, obscure accessories (I hate the abuse of the word 'rare'), and all. I'm very passive about keeping or selling it due to the ones in the background. No rush to botox my fingers off it. Did I mention that people think they are cute too? I don't think I posted on the Ultima 11 keeper, did I? Now THAT one is sweet!

That C5 on ebay needs a lot of work. That corrosion on the body I do not think could have been avoided by the optics. This sat in some very moist area for a long time. Seeing the oscilloscope in the backgorund in the one picture tells me this seller knows optics. We electronic type guys love optics most of the time.

The tricolor celestrons were painted with 3M "Velvetone" paint, which was beautiful when new, and truly felt like velvet. I think I read somewhere that 3M claimed that Celestron didn't apply the paint properly. In any case, I've never seen one that hasn't gone completely to heck, usually within the first few years.

Velvetone is still made in Europe, but its not legal in the USA, due to voc laws. Nextel Suede is a derivative and has the original colors, but though you can get it in the USA, you need to buy it in gallon kits (paint and catalyst), which would run the paint costs well over a grand. I used "house of Color" automotive paint custom matched to the Nextel color chips, and lover latex that with clear "soft feel" catalyst paint from "Alsacorp". Total cost for Tinky's paint was around $400-$500 iirc. I could have saved money by mixing larger volumes and finding more tricolors to restore, but I didn't. I still need to find a way to ship what I have left to Dave Groski like I promised. There's probably enough of the orange and beige gray to do another c8, but there might not be enough of the dark anthracite.

Lover latex??? Lol

I can't tell what I was trying to say there! Something about spraying a coat of the clear over the colors.

I would sure love to try my hand on that old tri color C5. I have owned 3 of the newer orange C5's, but never the older small round base C5's.

Is there a difference between the velvet tone and other smooth finish orange tubes?
I've had a few of the orange peel type orange tubes. The C5 I pictured above is ornage peel. The Millionaire's C8 in the picture is a smooth finish with a pastel hue as well as 'feel'. It is not a strict gloss or semi-gloss finish. It is original, from the original buyer, and as close to perfect as one could possibly hope for. The scope was very well cared for, even pampered, in CO high country, for it's whole life, with trunk. The scope is not sand cast, it has ribbed arms. I have not dated a motor yet.
