Theoretically, it should be able to resolve a pumpkin about 500 miles away.

I don't know much about the RV-6 and the production changes. I've owned the one pictured earlier for years but just never got around to using it until recently. I also recently bought this legless red painted job and I was going to borrow the legs from my old RV-6 when I thought to my self I never seriously tried out the RV-6. The RV-6 is all new to me.
The last ones have a longer Dec. housing and Philips head screws.
I always thought the mirrors were UPCO but Criterion did their own.
The red paint job I think is going to stay. Its an OK spray job and with a little rubbing compound should look pretty good.

It looks somewhat inadequate given some of the other newts posted but I think my 11TE-5 counts! And hey... the Intes Micro M606 is a 3rd hand scope and such an ODD optical setup that it has to kinda-sorta have some potential-classic points....

(Sorry about the refractor that snuck in.... they always seem to want to be the center of attention!)

I made this 10" F8 Newtonian from an Edmund mirror grinding kit and University Optics components forty years ago when it became clear I'd never own a ready-made Cave scope, so it doesn’t really count as a classic telescope. But it is a reflector sure enough. It's been on a wide variety of mounts over the years but I like this Dobsonian mount I made best. It has a felt lined eyepiece box with a lid to keep the dew off on the side, and setting circles, which I use a goto-ETX80 to reference coordinates with for finding faint stuff.

This would have been a much better photo if I'd have taken the time to clear out the cobwebs. I cap the tube but Its been awhile as I was fixing up a Cave I bought.

Even with a Flash the baffles have suppressed the light scatter before it reaches the mirror. Mathematically speaking, I could have used far fewer baffles but I must have gotten into the glue again. Though it's not so impressive looking it has excellent optics and Jupiter and it's moons looked awesome in it the other night.

Here's a few:

The Bausch and Lomb RV-5+ and the Criterion RV-6

The RV-5+ was manufactured by Mizar, at least it sits on a Mizar mount. Below is a C 4.5 along with something even rarer than a Newtonian in the CN Classics forum, rain in San Diego..

Its probably f12 or f12.5 (72" or 75) and I can adjust the tube length of my Superplanetary in the "A" area.
The f13 ALLEN mirror was a ebay purchase and this f12 ESCO mirror came as a extra with my Springfield 6"f8.4

The mirrors for the Springfield. It has three, primary, a diagonal to bring the light out the side of the tube, and a third to turn the light to the eyepiece because the eyepiece is stationary while the telescope moves.

Ther's very little about them on the interweb, I did see mention that only four Lomo Astele 203 (8") units were originally produced but couldn't see any mention of the mount style. I guess these might have been an initial trial run of what has now developed into the current 3 versions offered - OTA only, GEM and a more traditional fork mount model, the 203-EL.

I honestly don't remember the size of it, but I think the one in the pic was a 6", based on the diagonals of the finder and primary.

The biggest and smallest fully functional mounted complete reflectors, finder scopes and all (at Okie Tex). This was Jack Eastman's idea. That's him in the picture - the Santa Clause on drugs one. Nothing special about the big scope. Jack's is a trip and quite nostalgic. It was made using the center cut from one of Celestrons FIRST CAT mirrors for one of their models. It has a diagonal and functional focuser. The finder is about the size of a pen tube and sports a single spike centering reference.

Jack also has an 1877 Alvan Clark 6" on original tripod, and the original OTA box. Or is it a 7" ?

LOLOLOLO Yeah, Vaughn Parsons made both. Tom wanted a 36" F4.5 and Vaughn made an F5. Tom built the scope but it was a monster and the largest regular production Tectron, the yard Scope I. It was unwieldy so Tom sold it and ordered another 36" F4.5 and just wanted what he ordered. Vaughn made a 36" F4.65 the second time. Tom already had the box made with F4.5 in nice raised wood dental work highlight, just like the writing in the picture only on the other side. It stayed that way. Because of the primary size, that extra 0.15 stop amounted to about 5-1/2" of focal length, f=4,252mm. Vaughn also made my 30" primary in a custom build astrophoto capable scope. I'd sell that 30.

Tom has retired Tectron. I know he was planning on selling his Florida site and moving to the High S.W. Desert area for retired viewing. I don't know if he's there yet. I talked to Tom a few times while he had his Florida site up for sale and invited him to swing by here if he ever came this way. I wasn't on his route.

Those Towa 76mm reflectors are pretty darn good; and, IME, the older white tube 114mm models were even better.

I wonder what the sales volumes for Japanese reflectors were like compared to the refractors - haven't seen that many make it to current times.

Really like those red Edmund fork-mounted Newts; and with the Astroscan, they make for a sharp collection. IF I ever got tempted by the Dark Side, I'd want one of those, or an RV-6.

I guess the Palomar JR used a spherical mirror?

I believe most were figured to a sphere- but at f/11+, it doesn't matter. There isn't much difference between the two curves, and the performance is diffraction-limited.

Not a slam on the Palomar, as I think the Towa 76 & 114's were also spherical, and provided very nice views.

If I had room, I'd bid on the JCP Towa that I linked to on the auction thread.

I didn't take it as a slam. It can't be, because the difference between a sphere and parabola at f/11+ is still within the Rayleigh Criterion for resolution.

That takes me back. My first home-built 8" had a cork-lined aluminum tube, circa early 70s. Mr. Plath beat me by 15 years on that.

I'm lovin' it that this thread got dredged up again. Tho I'm primarily a refractor kinda gal, I just love looking at all these cool old classic Newts. They are beauties. I think its was the Dobsonion 'Devolution' (I know, I know, I'm gonna get downed for saying that!) that put me off to reflectors in the first place. After seeing these wonderful Newts from the glory days I'm totally stoked! I'm taking mine out to the next star party.

The focuser is a 1.25" Carle II Photo/Visual and has a profile low enough for a DSLR at prime focus to focus at infinity. I do have a 2" Novak low profile focuser, but that's for another project

The J.W. Fecker is really different in every way. Those are the only two pictures I have, I'll try to take more soon.
I have not had a chance to do much with it yet, just cleaned it up and a basic optical test which it passed easily. Its well made and very interesting.

Not the best photo, it was taken right after I got it home and stuck it in a storage room. Still awaiting a full restoration, it's actully in very good shape right now.

Cave 10" f/6 Custom Super Deluxe.

Byers 8" drive retrofit
JMI focuser w/motofocus retrofit

I have the original drive components and cover, so it can be returned to stock condition. I also have a Sky-Micro Giant focuser for it, as well. The black rectangles on the tube are Velcro patches, where the prior owner stuck the control box for the moto-focus.

Two sets of mirror mounting holes; the mirror was moved forward for photography by the prior owner. It's getting a full restoration when winter arrives.

I humbly apologize for the 68mm Mizar refractor over the Fecker.

The red thing is an Edmund 6" on pier, restored.

The two white OTA ends one each side are Edmund 6" and 4.25" gray pier, both restored.

The grey box on the floor is a Gilbert, ....well it's Gilbert (fairly nice).

The one to the right of the Fecker was just posted earlier.

It looks nice, but only you know what it needs when it gets a close look. From the photo, the first thing I'd work on is finding a guide scope that's just a little bit longer so the upper ring isn't on the dew cap!

Robert,

It's serial number 213 and was the 3rd oldest on the registry till Rich Hux (down the street from me) came up with his 6" early. The 6" may have been a proto type.

Very cool Neil.
I found out those bearing covers are called trunnion plates and the black like yours are the early and red are later. The 4 inch was only made for 18 months, 1957 to 1959.
