Wow, thisgives me hope my 4.25" f/10 newtonian I ground out a million years ago makes it back to me someday. Congrats, that's a sharp looking rig. Of course, we are all expecting your new "first light" report soon!

Hi Terra

Wow, it turns up after all these years. My mom past away exactly one year ago and I was amazed at the things she saved. As we get older we seem to look back. That's OK, it usually is all good. Going through my Mom's house was like going back in time. I was very lucky to have a Mom that knew one day, we would be looking threw the things she saved. I brought many memories home from her house. Remember, it's all about the experiences, not the toys or the things we buy. What a special telescope to have again. And this one does not have to be counted, it was yours.

I want to thank all of you for the wonderful well wishes and comments that you have contributed in this thread. I have read all of your words several times and I appreciate them so much. Thanks for making the special homecoming of this telescope from my childhood all the more special.

Terra

Terra,
Awesome tale of a scope and her mom re-united!! Equally awesome that, as a young lass, you actually built it!

Do my eyes deceive me, or are those erector set parts holding your secondary in place?

Russ

No Russ, but they do look like the erector set beams that I remember, except, didn't those also have a little raised ridge running along the edge of each side so that they could interlock? I remember Erector Sets, I always thought they were way cool. Anyway, this was the adjustable "spider" diagonal holder that either Jaeger or Edmund sold. I will have to check through the old catalogs on line. The 4 vanes were very malleable copper alloy that could be moulded to the circumference of your tube. They were also pre drilled with a close succession of holes throughout most of their length. You could cut and mold it to fit tubes of various diameters for both 6 and 8 inch telescopes.

Sounds a lot like the spider I made out of plumber's tape for my 3" f/6 (Edmund optics).

I'm 98% sure your spider came from Edmund since I have the same one that I used on my first scope which was 6" f5.8 made from an Edmund mirror kit as well. My parents and I drove from Delaware to the Edmund store in Barrington NJ one Saturday and I bought a piece of 6' section 7" diameter cardboard tube that had a slightly damaged end and the spider that was in the "Surplus Room". I think the spider cost under $2.00. Mine is made of brass.

On closer inspection I see that mine is brass. I also found it in the 1965 Edmund Catalog (item #50025, p. 21) selling for $4.25, Ppd. I also see a focuser on the same page that looks the same and is stated to have black wrinkle finish and chrome tube for $8.50 Ppd. doesn't say knob color but it sure looks the same. Seems I bought the two together?

Terra,
Jaegers was known for having the red knobs on their focusers while Edmunds were smaller in diameter and black. I have a couple examples of each and the Jaegers units all have the red knobs so I'm pretty sure you purchased the focuser from Jaegers.

Mystery solved. Edmund supplied the diagonal spider and mirror kit, and the primary mirror cell and focuser must have come from Jaegers. The finder, of course was purchased new from Unitron, tube home made. The eq. mount and wooden tripod, (still to be located) came from Edmund. The rings were bought second hand at RTMC. The tube was homemade.

Terra:

Where was RTMC held when you bought those rings? They look like Pacific Instruments rings to me, which would mean that you had the tube made to match the OD of fiberglass tubes from Parks?

-Tim.

Hi Tim, those rings were bought at RTMC up in Big Bear in the early 80s. They replaced an older plywood saddle with felt lined aluminum hose clamps. That saddle bolted to my Edmund eq. mount. It was very hard to find rings to fit my tube. I had the tube made years earlier at a local sheet metal shop. The tube is 7 inches o.d. and apparently that is an odd size. The front cap is a sort of rubbery plastic and it was purchased at the same time as the rings but from another person. Both were in the used/swap and shop section.

After getting the rings I had to make a steel plate to bolt them too. The rings are unusual in that each one bolts to the plate with two 1/4-20 hex bolts. The plate is 2 1/2 inches wide and 8 inches long. It is drilled and tapped 1/4-20 with two holes that allow it to bolt to the end mount mount. Also, the rings are not hinged. They are different. I haven't ever seen any others exactly like them. They may have even been ATM'd but if they were, they were well done.

Terra
