OMG! Guess what turned up today!!!
      #5824969 - 04/26/13 05:43 PM

The telescope that I built nearly 50 years ago and that I thought had been lost in storage has turned up. A friend of mine from out of town called and said that she found it in her basement with a bunch of moving boxes from her move. Wow. I hope to be going and getting it next week. Its a 6 inch F4.5 reflector. I ground the mirror and Cave optical did the final parabolic figure as I could never get it right. They also aluminized it. It has an Edmund rack and pinion focuser, a rolled sheet-metal powder coated tube (did that much later), Jaegers elliptical flat on an edmund spider, and best of all, a Unitron 40mm finder. She said she looked in the box and it looked perfect. She is now in the process of looking for an Edmund equatorial mount that I also had stored with her before her divorce. How weird! It will be like a time capsule. I haven't seen that telescope in over 10 years! Pictures will follow as soon as I get it.

Wow! I bet you are excited!! A mirror alumunized by Cave, that has got to be one in a million. Most of the Cave mirrors I have seen used Pancro.

They may have sent it there, all I know is that I sent it to Cave for figuring and aluminizing and Cave sent it back to me figured and aluminized.

That is a great day. My dad threw away two mounts of mine years ago. My RV 6 mount and a 1" shaft Edmund mount. That was 15+years ago and I still get a little miffed. Really nice you are getting that scope back Terra.

That is fantastic Terra!
Could you have a camera ready for your first sight? It would be sweet to see it before and after.

What Edmund mount are you looking for? The early grey or the later beige? The early grey is stronger and nicer. The 'red tube' beige ones had issues in their original condition. I've just finished (today) a major restoration on two of the 6" red tube beige ones, and worked out all the bugs with major other improvements, and suggestions.

I redid everything down to the OTA focuser. My keeper is on the right with the red RA and DEC clamps. I replaced a lot of parts with stainless steel, and just replaced period. The baggie has all the original parts for posterity. There was no need for any irreversible mods except for the adding of one micro sized set screw to hold a bushing for the worm shaft.

I also have a couple of the earlier Edmund 6" on grey mounts with drives. If you have any questions about a 6" Ed mount for your sweety, let me know.

Neil

I built a telescope 36 years ago, and the story of the mirror is the same. My scope was a 6" f/4, and I couldn't get the final figure right. So off to Cave went the mirror for finishing, and aluminizing. I put the mirror in a Novak mirror mount, used a Novak spider, and holder. I think the secondary I bought from Cave but I am not sure. The focuser was a small helical from a maker that is now long gone. Another scope I should have kept!!

I will definitely take pictures when I bring her home, open the box for the first time, all of it. We'll share this cool experience together. Neil, the mount was the gray crinkle finish eq that went with the 4 1/4 except it has wooden legs. Wow Mike, what a coincidence!

Well, I'm off to the machine shop this morning to hopefully finish the Jaegertron.

Be sure to add your mirror to the Cave mirror registry when you get it back! Did it have a serial number engraved on it? Refigures are cool, especially since you're the original owner.

I don't remember what is inscribed on the mirror, I never paid any attention before, just mounted it in the cell. It has only been out of the cell a couple of times. The last time was around 15 years ago when I shipped it back east from my parents house in SoCal. I took the mirror out and packed it separately. I do remember that it looked perfect and was very shiny still, no pits or rust. It had a zirconium? Coating.

I will take the mirror out and examine it for any numbers or marks on the side or back. It has a nice cast aluminum cell. It will be like a time capsule. I'm hoping to get it tomorrow but won't get home until very late. If I can get it then, I will post pics Monday.

I can appreciate your excitement ! That was quite an accomplishment making a F4.5 . My first mirror was a 6" F8 that I made over 30 years ago and the coating is still nice and bright also, wish I could say the same for my 12 1/2 .

Hi Norm, I haven't laid eyes on it in a few years, but last time I looked, the coatings were still nice and bright. Hopefully they still are. Yes, at F4.5 there was a lot of pyrex to grind out. I worked on it after school for months. At that depth it required a good parabola and that's where I ran into trouble and had to get the folks at Cave to help out.

Thanks Teddy, hopefully it won't be long now.

Terra

Well I went by my friend s place last night and picked up the telescope (OTA only, still haven't found the mount and tripod tho she's confident it's there somewhere in all the boxes in her basement). Drove a hundred miles home and got in very late and in the rain so its still out in the backseat of my truck. I haven't opened the box yet. She had opened it up just enough to peek in one corner. It's there. I'll go out and get it in a bit and post some pictures.

I just brought the box in and began cutting the tape to open it. It had been hiding in plain site in a vacuum cleaner box with no visible markings saying telescope. I had forgot to label it when I stored it and had been thinking I had put it in an old Celestron OTA box marked "Celestron." That's what she had been looking for.

The mirror looks pristine! Note the seam in the tube. That's the way we made them in the old days (47 years ago!).

I did the grinding, polishing, and rough figure. Cave finished the parabola, aluminized it and put their proprietary protective coating on it. 47 years later, it looks like the protective coating worked!

Here's the cast aluminum rear cell. From Edmund I think? I know I bought the mirror grinding kit, blank, etc. from Edmund and the spider, focuser, and cell also, but I know that some of it came from Jaegers too? The elliptical flat is from Cave (1/10 wave).

Thanks for helping jog my memory Robert. I remembered ordering some things from Edmund and some from Jaegers but I couldn't remember which for what? Except for the mirror grinding kit of course; that definitely came from Edmund. I wished I would have saved the paperwork from it; especially the paperwork from Cave when they sent the mirror back. I do remember seeing that letter maybe 20 or 30 years ago on a trip back home when I was going through some stuff in my old desk. I just left it and I guess it was pitched after my parents passed away.

A really interesting side-note. 13 years ago when my mom passed away and I was going through some of her stuff I did find the cancelled check that we had sent to Cave for the figuring and aluminizing of the mirror. (She never through anything like that away!) I looked at it with great curiosity, but then regrettably tossed it.

Hi Terra

Wow, it turns up after all these years. My mom past away exactly one year ago and I was amazed at the things she saved. As we get older we seem to look back. That's OK, it usually is all good. Going through my Mom's house was like going back in time. I was very lucky to have a Mom that knew one day, we would be looking threw the things she saved. I brought many memories home from her house. Remember, it's all about the experiences, not the toys or the things we buy. What a special telescope to have again. And this one does not have to be counted, it was yours.

No Russ, but they do look like the erector set beams that I remember, except, didn't those also have a little raised ridge running along the edge of each side so that they could interlock? I remember Erector Sets, I always thought they were way cool. Anyway, this was the adjustable "spider" diagonal holder that either Jaeger or Edmund sold. I will have to check through the old catalogs on line. The 4 vanes were very malleable copper alloy that could be moulded to the circumference of your tube. They were also pre drilled with a close succession of holes throughout most of their length. You could cut and mold it to fit tubes of various diameters for both 6 and 8 inch telescopes.

I'm 98% sure your spider came from Edmund since I have the same one that I used on my first scope which was 6" f5.8 made from an Edmund mirror kit as well. My parents and I drove from Delaware to the Edmund store in Barrington NJ one Saturday and I bought a piece of 6' section 7" diameter cardboard tube that had a slightly damaged end and the spider that was in the "Surplus Room". I think the spider cost under $2.00. Mine is made of brass.

On closer inspection I see that mine is brass. I also found it in the 1965 Edmund Catalog (item #50025, p. 21) selling for $4.25, Ppd. I also see a focuser on the same page that looks the same and is stated to have black wrinkle finish and chrome tube for $8.50 Ppd. doesn't say knob color but it sure looks the same. Seems I bought the two together?

Terra,
Jaegers was known for having the red knobs on their focusers while Edmunds were smaller in diameter and black. I have a couple examples of each and the Jaegers units all have the red knobs so I'm pretty sure you purchased the focuser from Jaegers.

Mystery solved. Edmund supplied the diagonal spider and mirror kit, and the primary mirror cell and focuser must have come from Jaegers. The finder, of course was purchased new from Unitron, tube home made. The eq. mount and wooden tripod, (still to be located) came from Edmund. The rings were bought second hand at RTMC. The tube was homemade.

Where was RTMC held when you bought those rings? They look like Pacific Instruments rings to me, which would mean that you had the tube made to match the OD of fiberglass tubes from Parks?

Hi Tim, those rings were bought at RTMC up in Big Bear in the early 80s. They replaced an older plywood saddle with felt lined aluminum hose clamps. That saddle bolted to my Edmund eq. mount. It was very hard to find rings to fit my tube. I had the tube made years earlier at a local sheet metal shop. The tube is 7 inches o.d. and apparently that is an odd size. The front cap is a sort of rubbery plastic and it was purchased at the same time as the rings but from another person. Both were in the used/swap and shop section.

After getting the rings I had to make a steel plate to bolt them too. The rings are unusual in that each one bolts to the plate with two 1/4-20 hex bolts. The plate is 2 1/2 inches wide and 8 inches long. It is drilled and tapped 1/4-20 with two holes that allow it to bolt to the end mount mount. Also, the rings are not hinged. They are different. I haven't ever seen any others exactly like them. They may have even been ATM'd but if they were, they were well done.

Terra

Thank you Mr. Bear

This was the original inspiration for my telescope. It's on p.6 of the Cave catalog and billed as the Astrola 6" Richest Field Telescope. Interestingly, the model in the picture is also "cradling" a scope in her arms as well. The Cave scope was F4, mine was F4.5 but the final figure was still Cave.

Hi Terra, I just had to chime in and add my comments to your incredible reunion. What joy! The moment I saw that picture of you cradling your RFT, it made me think of that model you describe in my old Cave catalog. I’ll have to admit, that picture has so much more impact and class when the person holding the telescope is an accomplished ATM-er (as well as collector and observer) such as you, rather than just a model (or relative)...

Anyway, your story has hit a special cord in me because I too, in the mid-60's, had started a 6” f/4.5 (aimed for 4, but became 4.5) from my leftover Edmund mirror grinding kit supplies. I got it fully polished, but never had a chance to figure it by the time high school and college took over. So looking at your finished product gleaming in your arms is touching, and an incredible source of inspiration for me. Your pearl white tube is beautiful; by the way, I was able to get a 7” OD aluminum seamless tube from Optica b/c in Oakland for my 6” f/10 (c.1965) – but it may have been their last piece, as it was squashed a little at one end – I had my huge friend stomp on it back to round!

Also, thank you for including the link to the catalogue. I stupidly threw mine out after I bought Cave’s mount in the early ‘70’s, and haven’t seen one for a long time – it’s so nostalgic. I remember mine having a more pink and white background with a younger model on the cover (maybe a later issue?) but the contents intantly brought back all the memories.

Happy Mother’s Day!
Great post!
Steve

Congratulations on your family reunion. That is indeed a special scope. I've enjoyed sharing the journey with you.

Also, thank you for helping me resolve a mystery regarding the Oval gold foil JTII stickers! I have several Celestron eyepieces with that very same sticker. I was pretty sure that they were from the mid-1960's and your finderscope story confirms it for me.

In the post following the one that I've replied to there is a symbol next to the focuser. What does it signify? Is it a logo?

Thanks, again!

Terra, what an astonishing story, I think the best here, ever. And what a wonderful mother's day gift. That slick reddish-cover catalog brings back memories, I believe it is identical to the one I had, maybe the same issue. I remember the picture with the 6" RFT, and especially the one on the back cover with the 8" model B deluxe, that was my ideal. Then I looked in the product list -- 6" mirror refigure for $35. I had mine refigured and remember the price, must be the same catalog. I had one of the 6" f/8 Edmund mirrors from the "bad" period and had to have it redone. Came back one of the best optics I've ever seen. Interestingly, the coating on it is still good after about five decades (in a not-good environment, chemical plant only a mile away for many years). I wonder why there is so much trouble with coating durability these days, they seemed to know how to do it then.

Hi Blake, that isn't a logo by the focuser, its a foil sticker of a crescent moon and star that my daughter gave me when she was 6 or 7 years old (she's now 29) from a page of stickers she got. We put it on the telescope way back then and its still there.

Hi Tom,

The mount I originally had for that telescope has not yet turned up. However, it was in the same storage lot and is probably in another moving box in my friend's basement. It will take another trip down to her place and going through a bunch of boxes to turn it up if its still there. We will look for it at some point.

Actually, the first mount was an alt-az pipe mount on a 4x4 pier designed after one in Sam Brown's Edmund Book about "How to Build a Telescope." That mount rode on the pipe threads and is long gone. It was replaced not to long after the telescope was built with an Edmund Mount (the one presently hiding in storage). That Edmund Mount was the same one as they supplied for their 4 1/4 F10 reflector, except it was on a short wood tripod (Edmund), and had a longer stainless steel counter-weight bar that a friend machined for me and two of the counterweights rather than the one that came with the mount. The extra Edmund counterweight and longer bar easily accommodated the heavy 12 pound OTA.

As that mount is currently missing, I will have to improvise. The rings of this telescope have a wide base and each require two bolts rather than the customary one. I had a wide steel base plate machined for them (about 2 1/2 inches wide or so). I will bolt a short Vixen dovetail rail to the bottom of the plate and then I will be able to use the scope with my Universal Astronomics Unistar Deluxe mount and heavy duty steel tripod. The telescope, being primarily an RFT does wonderfully on an alt-az mount and that mount will very ably handle its weight. it's the same mount that I use for my 5 and 6 inch F5 refractors.

I will post pictures when I get it mounted and of course, when I lay my hands on the old Edmund mount.

Well, I got the scope mounted today and looked through her for the first time in many years. Just looked at tree tops, telephone insulators, etc., checked the collimation, aligned the finder etc. Still presents crystal clear, sharp images using a wide field 19mm eyepiece to yield ~35X.

I still haven't been able to locate the original Edmund Eq. mount, but the scope's mounting plate had a row of five 1/4-20 tapped holes down the center, designed to allow for balancing. And I just happened to have the perfect mount and tripod for the scope. And guess what, the mount head is 1/4-20.

The mount/tripod is very stable, has smooth alt-az motions, adjustable tension, horizontal and vertical locks, is adjustable height, and best of all, it is perfectly consistent with the age of the telescope (1960s).

These mounts were available to ATMers back when I built this telescope, though I purchased mine many years later. It is an American-made (NY) Professional Jr. 16mm motion picture camera tripod like those used to make the old time news-reels. This one was military surplus and dates to WWII.

I always thought that an alt-az mount would have been perfect for this scope. Now it has one. This will be its dedicated "ride." I'm pretty happy with it now, just as it is.

Awesome combo Terra. I saw an old Emunds mount on either Cloudynights or Astromart today for $125.

Thanks Johann. I am confident my old Edmund mount will turn up at some point, however I think I will like this combination much better for the low power, wide field sky sweeping this scope was intended for. And it still has that cool, retro look.

That's just plain purdy, Terra. Ive seen those tripods around but never could figure out the scale of them. They were always shown in front of a back drop or something. Looks very robust and perfectly capable. Very nice setup.

I have a very robust Bogan that was meant for Video cameras. Neat thing is that a losmandy plate fits right into the slot and locks down. I will have to dig it out and take a picture.

I do like your set up Terra. Very nice. You have some great gear.

Beware, in the last picture it appears to be in the vanguard of a viciuous dog's view, and I am vicariously envisioning a veritude of vandalism!

Yep, it looks right at home on that mount/tripod! (and doggie-approved, too!) I like the extended lock/steering handle, no more grabbing the end of the tube to aim it!
After many years of being a purist and using only equatorial mounts, I was given a Meade alt-az, and have come to appreciate their ease-of-use for casual stargazing...... I have my ATM 60 on it, it's perfect for the task.

What a wonderful find! Really great to be able to get hold of your own 'scope again, must bring back some great memories!

Looks good on the Professional tripod/mount, that has the appearance of being very stable and smooth.

I just got around to pulling the mirror to clean the optics and collimate the scope. The surface is as lovely as the day I got it back from Cave 47 years ago.

Here's the sticker on the back. You can also see the name "A. Clark" which I would assume is a misspelling of my last name (Clarke) and my middle initial (middle name Anne) unless it is the name of the optician who refigured it?

Scribed into the glass on the side of the mirror it state in print rather than script:

"Refigured by Cave Optical #R672714
F4.5 26 13/16" F.L. 6-2-67

Go with Alvan. Even though it is only a little more prestigious than Terra.

Very cool Terra to have Cave touchup your mirror.
I'm a Clarke too, see:

The thing that jumps out at me with this picture is: those are some huge mirror clips. I wonder if you can see them during use.

When I assembled my 6" reflector, back in the day, I had the clips cut back to where they barely extended over the edge of the mirror. Like about 1/8".

That's cool Robert! Maybe we're distant cousins.,

I have never noticed them Frank. I will check again when I take it out to the next star party. It's up next in the rotation.
