Unitron 128
      #5839217 - 05/03/13 10:27 PM

Not 100% sure why, but I just bought this on ebay after exchanging a number of emails with the seller. No, I didn't pay $700, and someone else bought the Unihex with 40mm eyepiece. Now I just have to decide if I should use the tripod from my 114, or start searching for another tripod and keep 2 60mm Unitrons. Oh, and by the way, he found the base for the EQ mount! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261210503611

Good deal on the 128.
A little cleanup and the 140 mount
Will sell.
That was 3rd time listed.
Didn't know what he had.

I'm so glad you picked this up since being local here in Houston I was so very tempted. Besides I have another unitron on the way so 2 in 1 week would have got me in more trouble that I'm already in. Congratulations on the purchase, should clean up nicely.

Clock drive was not found, nor the tripod. Brian hooked me up with a good ebay deal on a Unitron tripod w/alt-az mount. I am quite happy he found the base of the mount, though. Without that there was going to be a bigger issue.

Unitron 128 - shipped! new [Re: nightpilot]
      #5844101 - 05/06/13 05:57 PM

So far, so good:

"OK Steve we are all packed up. You should have received 3 tracking numbers. I ended up using 3 boxes, 1 for the tube, 1 for the mount and one for the lenses. The mount is shipping priority because that ended up being both cheaper and safer. So you should get the mount first. I wrapped the counter weight and taped it down to one corner to keep it from flying around. The lenses are wrapped up in a padded envelop then placed in a shoebox with lots of padding. The scope is in the wooden box wrapped in padding then wrapped in cellophane. Everything looks nice and tight. I will drop them off at the post office today so you should hopefully have them by Saturday, Tuesday at the latest.

Thanks again and enjoy!"

Considering that shaft is most likely impossible to find I would suggest taking off the knob and having a machine shop make a new shaft. The knob is glued on so you will have to soften up the glue before you can take it off. I do not believe they molded the knob onto the shaft.

I agree. It would be an easy matter to machine a new threaded steel rod to the same specifications. It's a later model so should be a standard thread so a die will be available and threads won't have to be cut on the lathe. The "sticky" part (pun intended) will be transferring the knob from the original to the new rod. II am sure you are well up to it Steve considering your fine restoration work so far; it will be a simple task for you. The 128 drives are really nice. Before you know it you will have a lovely 128 next to your gorgeous 155.

Steve

You could simply just put a thread on the part of the shaft that is left. That should work. If you put a sleeve on it you might run out of threads sooner than you want when using the scope. The mssing inch or so should not make that much difference.

all you need is a dye and then put new threads on the shaft.
Looks it up on google. Pretty simple. If you can sand and paint you can use a dye.

You take the broken threaded part to a auto parts store (not the large chains) and have them match a dye to the threads. Just buy the tool and put new threads on it. IF you ask them nice they will show you.

You need to put it on a thread gauge first to determine which die to purchase. You will also need the die wrench. Since its a later Unitron it should be a common thread standard. Once you determine which one you might just want to get a set of taps and dies that includes the wrenches too. Harbor Freight is a good place to shop for one.

Then just put the rod you need to re-work in the vise and the bent end, and cut the rod with a hack saw just above the bend. (Looking at your picture it looks like a clean break so you may be able to skip that step.) File the cut smooth. Put the rod vertically in the vise with the end you want to thread pointing up. Put a little oil on the tip of the rod, and balance the die on the tip in its wrench and slowly begin to rotate it with a tiny bit of downward pressure and you will feel the die bite into the metal. Keep it lubricated with a little oil and slowly rotate, the die until you have as much thread as you need, occasionally backing it off in the opposite direction to clear the filings. It's totally easy Steve. You can do metal.

Most important is to make sure the dye stayes square with the rod otherwise you will have a wigly rod when you turn it. There is special thread cutting oil. Ot maybe the local machine shop at the auto parts will be nice and do it for you.

Thats gotta be a tough part to find. Sleeve might work. As has been mentioned you may loose thread. Good advice on making the rod. You may have to do that or have someone make it. Boy other than that it should clean up good. Nice 128. I am a sucker for those black and white setting circles.

I've always just used plain old 10w30 and it worked fine with hand turned taps and dies.

Wow, a lot of great advice everyone! Having tried a bunch of screws in the hardware store that were not quite the right size, my biggest concern would be finding the correct die size for the sometimes funky Unitron threads. Losing a 1/4 or even 1/2 inch of threading is not critical, you would just have to loosen the lock a do a rough adjustment and not have as much travel with the slo-mo control.

IF you take the slow motion control to the store with the broken part they can see what trhead size it is and provide the proper dye. Or just find a machine shop in your area and bring some flowers with you. Now you need to know, around here they charge $100 an hour. The reason I bought a set of taps and dye and many other tools. Even a mini mill from harbor freight. I do not know if you live in an area that deserves a harbor freight. For years there was not one in the DC area. THe closest was in NJ. But if you like to tinker that is a great place. While you are there pick up some of those maple work tables. They are a joy for $120.

To a trained eye that is obviously a coarser thread on the broken control. If you could find a coupler the right size for the rod diameter, you could make a flat spot on the two pieces and hold them together (after cutting off the bent section). Here is what I am talking about:

McMaster-Carr shaft couplers

Just take it to the parts store and see if a dye matches up. Simple take the threaded part and see if it will screw into the dye easily. If it does you have the right dye.

Well, found another solution. I received a very rough 140 mount with the tripod I bought for this. Because of some damage to it, I decided not to sell it whole, but maybe for some parts that someone may need. Anyway, the part(?) the shaft screws in to fits on the 128 mount. Seems to be a good solution.

And I forgot to mention you can remove the nut that the control screws into and screw it into another mount if the threads do not match between the mounts. However, you found the perfect solution. Nice work Steve. Now to get you some screws for your other project.

Thanks - that is basically what I did. Removed the nut from the damaged 140 and replaced the nut on the 128. Then, the good shaft from the 140 fits in the "new" nut on the 128.

Getting my learner's permit on EQ mounts to practice some more for the 155. Totally took the mount apart yesterday and cleaned and re-greased. Clouds rolled in before really dark, but had some nice practice and views of the moon. Nice and smooth...

There she is. Alt/Az is very intuitive - up, down, left, right. This takes some getting used to, but I can see the advantage once you "get it".

Looks good Steve. I have the alt-az and the eq. mounts for my 60mm Unitron. She's set up in the living room on the eq. and the alt-az mount and tripod and folded and standing in a corner, so last night, thinking I was going to have a brief session, I unbolted her from the eq and took her out with the alt-az mount. As it turned out, it would have been a perfect night to use the eq. mount. Its nice to have the option. They are both such great, stable mounts.

I agree. These mounts are a truly wonderful to use. I wish there was something available today that would work as well. Not only are a joy to use, but they are a joy to look at. Truly a prized posesion in any collection. Maybe be one of the reasons I do not collect much of anything else. I like some of the older Tasco mounts made by Royal Astro, but that is about it. Well, maybe if we go back before all these department store mounts started being made do we get back to some serious mounts again that actually enhanced the viewing experience instead of distracting from it.

"I wish there was something available today that would work as well."

I think most every quality mount today works at least as well. Some even better. They do look pretty though. I am just not sure how important that is in the scheme of things.

Not sure if that is a mount. Looks more like someone decided to hide as much of it as possible. cover it up with as much plastic as possible is todays motto for cheaply made mounts. Open it up and you find plastic gears, electronics that will not last long and a host of other things that will clearly not last nearly as long as the classic mounts of old. Just look at any Unitron mount and you will see craftmanship you would not be able to afford today. Add that classic weight driven drive and you have a work of art you would gladly put on display. 50 years from now that modern mount will be in scrap heap wating to be melted down while people will be bidding big dollars on that Unitron mount that is still functional.

I think your Unitron bias is showing. While the mount I pictured is on the lower end of the price spectrum I think it "works as well" as any Unitron. If you don't like the CG-5 as an example how about this one. There are so many modern mounts to pick from that should work " as well" as a Unitron mount and more than likely will still be around for decades to come. That is what I was referring to, a mount that "works as well" as a Unitron mount. Again, I will say the Unitrons mounts sure are pretty to look at and use as "display" pieces, as you said.

That is too bad, I was having so much fun and I thought our posts were educational and enlightening. I know I like hearing others views on classic scopes. Sometimes it is just so easy.

Let me put it plain simple words that even you can understand. You are not here to enlighten or educate anyone. If someone says something is white you say it is black. You are here to argue plain and simple. Then you got me sucked up into all this foolish bantering. Enough is enough.

Steve I apologize for getting carried away like this on your post.

Thanks Johann. The ebay seller contacted me last night and said the "buyer" of the Unihex and 40mm EP backed out. They were originally listed with this scope package. He offered me a good price for both, so looks like I will have a Unihex again. The last Unihex I had left with the 145C package that PiSigma bought from me. It just seems this 128 NEEDS a Unihex, plus I have a bunch of .965" EPs with the 155.

I agree. A Unihex must be in the possession of every Unitron aficionado. After all, nothing says Unitron like the archetypal Unihex. And they are fun too, especially when fully loaded with Unitron eyepieces.

Yes, I just took my focuser apart to get the old sticky grease out and the drawtube does have the baffle inside.

Yes those are baffles inside the drawtube. If you check the cone of light coming from the lens you would see that it is a baffle to make sure there is not any scattered light which would reduce contrast. Most of your better built scopes will have those baffles. My AP focuser had a whole bunch of those in the focuser.

Interestingly, both the Unihex drawtube and the 1 1/4 inch drawtube are unbaffled; I would assume to not vignette larger eyepieces since either the Unihex or the 1 1/4 inch diagonal are placed closer to the objective due to the longer path of those devices.

I don't think we are talking about the same thing. The reducer in the 128 I have is just that, a reducer and not a baffle like you see in the "better built scopes".

That is what my AP focuser does look like. Great craftsmanship.

I just looked at about 5 60mm tubes and the only baffle I see is the last one in the OTA. I did not see a stop of any type in the focuser. If you place your eye in the end of the draw tube can you see the foil spacers around the edge of the lens. In all 5 I looked at I could see the foil spacers.
