Revisiting a older Rare Unitron 140 mount.
      #5846228 - 05/07/13 05:58 PM Attachment (36 downloads)

back in 2009 i found a older unitron 140 mount with a 360
degree worm gear on the base.
it was in terrible condition when i bought it but it cleaned up well.
still trying to figure the date on that one....must have been early 50's as i still have not seen another.
has anyone seen or does anyone have one of these rare unitron 140 mounts.
notice the worm gear on the base...it dosent run out
of travel like 99.9% og the others i have seen.
here is a before and after picture.

The 1956 Unitron catalog I have a pdf of appears to have the same type of mount for the 140.

Really nice restoration Brian. Looks brand new. I love the 140 mount. Love the 114 mount too, but the 140 is definitely beefier.

When I bought a very early 128 , I started pouring over old ads to date it. This is one I saved showing the first available 3 and 4 inch altz scopes. I would bet your mount is from those first types. They became available April 1953.

Well, did not find one like the 140 you have. Do have what is most likely the next generation with the slanted bar that the OTA directly mounts on.

Hi Brian, well what a coincidence that a 140 arrived here today with the same az worm drive which was a complete suprise since only yesterday I read this thread. The manual is c. dated 1954. So I guess that makes #3.

Since I was shining it up today, I thought I'd include a side by side picture with a 114 that shows the differences in design. Both the 114 scope (62mm) and the 140 scope (75mm) are close in age, having the straight lettering & aluminum focus knobs. The 114 mount has dongles (?not sure what they are called) that I doubt are original.

What are those aftermarket slow motion flex controls?

And what are those things on the other side. Looks like bolts. Can we see another picture from the other side.

Yep - on the early 114 mount they are slow motion controls, aftermarket I would assume - I'm not sure what original would look like for the very early 114s since this is my first. Picture of the other side below. The 140 mount has the spring tensioner on the Alt axis, in an attempt to keep this on topic...

Wow. have never seen that before. That is home grown. Sort of interesting. There maybe other people that would like to know more about that interesting way of controlling the slow motion. I bet it eliminates the spring action being overloaded and then the scope will not move.
