Finally finished my 76x1218mm "Jaegertron"
      #5850122 - 05/09/13 02:18 PM Attachment (29 downloads)

Last weekend I finally finished my 76x1218mm "Jaegertron" whose cell design I first discussed in this earlier thread:

http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5666072/page...

Sadly, I still haven't had decent weather for the first star test. I began with a Unitron Model 140 tube, focuser, and dew shield and a Jaegers 83mm x 1278mm air spaced objective.

The final telescope wound up being a tad heavier than my complete Unitron #140. Here it is lying on the daybed in the study so you can get an idea as to how long the OTA is.

Here she is:

Here's the custom 1.25 inch visual back that goes into the standard Unitron #140 focuser.

Had to use the lathe to open up the previously threaded dew shield for a nice snug press fit.

The tube is tapped to hold the cell without requiring nuts. Here you see the cell in the indexing chuck on the milling machine to drill holes at 72 degrees apart to match those in the tube.

you will find a very nice star test. I have one of those lenses, but and 800mm version, I put in an old cresent scope I have. Lens fit perfectly in the cell. Had to cut off a few inches of the tube. Very nice veiws. you will be very happy.

I did not notice, but did you blacken the inside of the lens cell? If you do not it will cause reflections.

now it is time for a shootout

And on tonights card is Mr. Unitron and Mr. Jeager.

Protect yourselves at all times and may the best lens win.

Get ready to rumble

Nice looking scope Ms. Clarke.

After Mr. Jaeger (correct spelling I believe?) wins that shootout a proper match with Mr. Royal Astro might be appropriate.

Don't do it Terra.

Unitron against Jeager. Like my spelling better
I have a feeling that someone is really zealous when it comes to Unitrons.

That was very interesting to see how you went about adapting the larger Jaegers lens to the 3" Unitron tube. Great series of images of the work progress in the two threads of posts too. Mark

I had the Jaegertron out for the first time today for some solar observation. Only did white light with a glass inconel over the aperture filter and then with an APM solar wedge. Took it up about 120X with a 9.7mm Plossl ep and the solar wedge, up to just under 100X with the inconel filter and a vintage Royal Astro prism and 12.5mm Kellner ep. I was very pleased at how it performed. That is a pretty high magnification for solar with daytime turbulence. It presented absolutely lovely sharp and contrasty images at between 60 and 80X; nice granulation and lots of penumbral detail in the sunspots, lim darkening and bright white faculae. Even with a 26mm and ~47X the image still showed lots of detail.

Will do the moon, Jupiter and Saturn tonite.

The Jaegertron worked great last night on the Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter. Lots of detail, great contrast, a perfect velvety black sky as their backdrop. Went up to 200X with a 6mm vixen ortho. Some of the best views,of the moon I have ever had. Saturn, nice black inside the rings, Cassini's division easy at 100X. It was beautiful with a 9mm Unitron symmetrical yielding ~130X. Could see faint banding as well. Jupiter was first up. Jupiters's banding and Galilean moons nice in spite of being down in the soup. Nice color on the bands. After Jupiter it was on to Castor which it split nicely. The moon was the main feature, and Saturn rounded out the evening as the last entry. This scope as NO hint of CA what so ever. It would hold its own with the 3 inch Unitron though I didn't have them both set up. I guess I got one of the good Jaeger lenses. I am very pleased.

That is great. Mine is the best 80mm I have and my others are very good. Yes.. I can't see any color. An aperture ratio of nearly five does that with a well designed achromat. To me, it seems the Jaegers have a little better color correction than the other similar achros. My 6" F10 should have a good bit more color than my 5" F12 D&G but it is only very slight. They are both very well corrected.
