Newbi with a RG Meade
      #5945429 - 06/28/13 07:23 PM Attachment (33 downloads)

Hello, I just got this scope off craigslist and thought I would introduce myself. I have questions about eyepiece selection. At this time it just has a bare 2" focuser. I also don't know anything about the RA drive and the "controller" for it. Any input\info would be great thanks.

Wow, gorgeous scope! Looks like the 8" f6. I have the mirror from one of those in a new tube and it is superb. For your focuser, it looks like it is missing the thread on sleeve that takes the eyepiece. They had two for these, one that took 2" eyepieces, and another that took 1.25". You might try Astro Parts Outlet and ask Don if he has either of those for the Meade 8" RG focuser. Google Astro Parts Outlet for his web site.

Regards the drive corrector, that may not be needed for basic tracking if there is a standard wall plug and cord on it. It allowed varying the frequency to let a photographer sped it up or slow it down to compensate for drive gear errors.

Dave

Dave,
Thanks for the info, I will give Don a call tomorrow to see if I can find the sleeve part. I was not clear with my previous statement. It came with a drive corrector that seems to be working. I just know almost nothing about it. I took the main mirror out to clean the dust off and it did say it was a F6 in sharpie, it had more on it but I do not remember it off the top of my head.
Thanks again
Brandon

Brandon, welcome to our fold. That is an absolutely gorgeous scope and should be a great performer. Great find. What a way to start off your vintage collection. Should you have any questions just ask, there's a massive knowledge base and eagerness to assist right at your finger tips. Love to see more photos of her!

Nice to see all the responses....I will post more pictures (without me in them) when I get back home in a few days. I live in Alaska so viewing is not great right now but I hope to have a eyepiece or two ready to go, and the scope collimated by this fall. I spent quite a bit of time as a kid looking through a *BLEEP* Simmons, dreaming of a better scope, so 20 years later Im looking forward to trying again.

Welcome!

I used to build those at Meade in 1979. Which drive corrector does your scope have? Is it the version with the joystick and two-axis control? Does your scope have the motorized dec slow motion option?

This was a nice, sturdy combination of components. Wish I had one, but I wasn't making enough when I worked there to be able to afford one!

-Tim.

Hi Brandon

Great scope and welcome to the zoo!

Alaska! How many degrees from horizon to the North Star? 41 here in Ohio.

Tim,
I am not around the DC right now but here is what I remember. It did have a pad with UP\DOWN\LEFT\RIGHT buttons on it. It had holes where it looks like a Dec drive went but just has a knob now. I have one more picture with me that I took of the focuser but you may be able to see a little more. I will post more pic's when I get home in a few days.

Looks like an early one, and in good shape, too.

The 2" "model 680" focuser is a nice focuser. I still have a couple of them.

I notice there's a bright band around the pier cap. Do you remember if this is an aluminum tape strip or machined into the pier cap? Reason I ask is that, initially, they put aluminum tape strips around them, but it was hard to get them lined up nice and straight. So I suggested they machine a raised rim into the edge while they've got it in the lathe to machine the OD for the cap to fit the pier. Then, send it off to the painter (they used a plastic coating that looks somewhat like wrinkle black paint but is more durable) to have the whole thing painted. Then, when it comes back painted, chuck it up in the lathe again and machine the paint off the raised rim and you're done!

I made other suggested improvements while I was there, but that's the one I remember, because it seemed so obvious and it did save a lot of hassle and time.

-Tim.

Welcome! Nice scope! Someone must have a spare ring for such a focuser.

Well I found a 2" ring from Don. I also got a 1.25" adapter for it. So all I need is an eyepiece or three...;) Thanks for the help

Very nice scope. Welcome to CN classic forum. Eyepieces should be in good supply in this forum. DO you know which ones you would like?

No-I do not have any good direction with the eyepiece selection. I would like to get used if possible to save money, but at the same time do not mind paying for quality optics. I have four children (4-12 yrs.) and would love to get something they could put their eye up to and see a good image. (eye relief and FOV....) I think starting with the moon and working at the planets is a good place to start. Right now I am reading and trying to sift through a lot of information and options. I use optics in some of my other hobbies, Binos, Rifle Scopes, Spotting Scopes so I have some back ground with base terminology but not all of it transfers into the telescope world. I think I will start a new thread in the newbie section and just introduce everyone to the scope in this thread.

Thank-you

30 or better yet 40mm. My wife always complains when I ask her to look. She loves the 40mm

in agreement with the above. Start with 30 or 40mm and then a 20 a 15 and an 8mm. That should provide plenty of excitement.
