Classic Telescopes / NEAF 2014
      #5989577 - 07/25/13 01:36 PM

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Classic telescopes will have a booth at the 2014 NEAF telescope show in Suffern New York this year. I have contacted the Rockland Astronomy club and they have welcomed us to participation in their show next year. They are working on the location and have told me they would like to put us in a more prominent location than what we had two years ago. I have the feeling they are very happy we are coming back to their show.

Jon Miles will be assisting me in the details and show preparation, and I know many of you will also be helping. We need to choose a list of representative scopes, prepare some graphic banners, and make sure the booth is manned over the two days. I know many of you will participate. Not to step on anyoneís toes, we did try to contact Preston, he must not frequent this site as much, but after several months, we are going ahead with it.

Jon and I have started early in order for our members to have enough time to organize their vacations to be able to come to the show. We have lots to do and lots of organizing ahead of us.

There is a lot to be done and plenty of time to do it. Jon will be organizing the telescope list with names of those who can attend and bring their gems. I will be coordinating our booth and location at the show with RAC organizers and will be putting together the graphics, banners and materials we will need for the show. Internet will be available and my 27Ē IMac screen can provide visuals for slideshows that you can provide for the show. I will also be helping Jon with the details.

We need your ideas. What else can we provide visitors that come to our booth? How can we promote the classic scopes and why they are important to us?

We also would like to organize a Saturday evening trip to the local brewery or other dinner venue, so we can cool down together after the first night of the show (Saturday).

If you cannot or are not ask to bring a scope that does not mean that you cannot participate in the show. We welcome your input. We welcome your ideas. We welcome you to come also. We can always use the manpower. The previous Classic show had only 7-10 participants. It would be wonderful if we could get more of you to come. I want this to be a fun experience for all. I do not want to burden those participating with no free time to see the show. We need bodies in the booth (boy that sounds weird!) and help setting up and tearing down. We need people to put in a few hours during the show, thatís all. Please plan on coming and get to know fellow members in a real life setting.

This is the beginning of a thread that Iím sure, will run for a long time. Chime in with your comments and ideas. Jon and I would love to hear from all of you. Letís make this a community event that all can participate in.

A few details:

To date I have secured the space. I have read up on the previous NEAF thread and I am going to draw from the model Preston put together for the last event (His model is in the NEAF thread from 2 years ago). It seemed to work well especially since we have much more time to plan than the last show. We will have a floor plan, and a list of telescope models representing what all of you out there believe are significant pieces of history. We cannot take all of your telescopes to the show so please bear with Jon and myself when we reach the point of selection. There will be fees and costs associated with the show. I had originally planned to pay for the two spaces myself. Now that Ed and the RAC have stepped up, I can pick up most of the other costs without any additional donations. I have looked into the insurance to cover trade show activities and we will be purchasing it. Also, everyoneís homeownerís policy should cover any scopes brought to the show. Please check your policy, as our tradeshow insurance may not cover your telescope completely (primarily if someone gets hurt and sues Jon or myself as organizers).

Currently I am trying to contact Mike with Cloudy Nights to see about using their name and logo as the representative community forum for our booth. We live on the CN site. I think it appropriate that we can state it. Stay tuned. This involves the legal stuff.

As most of you know, Jon Miles participated last show and has the experience and the knowledge to make wise telescope choices for the show. He also knows what worked and what didnít. Iím leaning on him! Help him all you can. Be nice.

Iíve participated in both going to the NEAF show and the imaging show for the last 4 years. I have made a few contacts and can draw on them for help. I will be booking the Crown plaza hotel and staying there for 5 days leaving on Monday. If you are making arrangements to drop off a scope or pick up after, that will give everyone plenty of time to get their scope back. What ever is not picked up is mine. : )

So thatís about it for now. It will be a pleasure for Jon and I to help you guys make this show happen. Please make your plans now to attend.

Thanks so much.

Turk

I'd suggest CNCT group be near or next to Antique Telescope Soc. We have common interests and it makes MY life easier!

I found a great bagel place last year so can help with breakfast!

I am looking forward to it again. We had a ball 2 years ago. and while I enjoyed ATS exhibit this year, it wasn't the same.

This is going to be a lot of fun. We had a great time putting on the show in 2012 and I missed not doing it last year. Tom and I decided we needed to get this going again.

To start I would ask that anyone who would like to exhibit a classic scope to please contact me via PM with your email address, phone number and what classics you have that you would like to exhibit. We had a really great representation of different types and periods at the 2012 show and I would like to achieve a similar balance for 2014. Once the list settles out over the next couple of weeks we'll go over who has what and decide on what to go with given the space available. If I don't acknowledge your message right away don't panic, I'm on a death march at work right now but should be more available in a few weeks.

And of course any CN members who can at least attend the show would be great too. It was a lot of fun at the 2012 show meeting a number of the folks who participate here.

Turk,

You can count me in. I live an hour's drive from NEAF so I can help with whatever you need. PM me for my email.

One suggestion I have is that we create a set of video interviews with both the owners of the scopes being displayed and with members of this forum, whether they attend or not. They can show off their classic scope or eyepiece collections at home and talk about their passion for classics. Five to ten minutes is long enough. I'm trying to learn video interviewing and editing, so I can assist with this idea if you like it. I think it would draw more people than a slide show.

It could be, yes. But anyone with a smart phone or recent point-and-shoot camera can take a video of themselves, or let a friend interview them. We could come up with suggested questions. Then it's just a matter of making the video available to someone who can edit it. The idea needs some work, but I think it could be neat.

Hello Turk and thank you for taking over this task.
I haven't heard from Preston in well over a year and hope he is fine.
Two years ago I was planning to bring a Unitron 510 for display at NEAF. Preston had scoped out the footprint for the area needed and was to be one of the highlights of the classic display.
Yet as time neared, I was faced with a means for delivery. Even considered removing the forward passengers seat on this full size SUV and at 20MPG, a transport in an air conditioned and shock absorbed environment.
I've thought of the alternatives, and oh yes for many here on CN's suggestions, a ways and means.
So here were just a few of the suggestions:
To package and ship via UPS, FedEx, train, the belly-of-the bus transport, or pulling a van, etc... Yet none to me were safe, secure and practical.
But for me, I have found a way of bringing a long tube case in the comfort of an automobile with a minimal expense, and thought I would share this method with others caught in the same situation as I, two years ago.
The OTA case is 7'6" long and thus limits the transport in an air conditioned environment.
Bus lines and commercial vehicles are no way to move a delicate instrument and I shudder to think of the abuse and the temperature changes from here to there. Just as a for instance, imagine a classic scope moving through Phoenix in August towards the west coast?
So here might be a consideration for those interested in transporting a delicate instrument across country.
Rent a two week automobile from either a national rental agency, or a local dealership with unlimited mileage.
Ensure that the mid size car has a trunk with a door, opening into the passenger compartment. With folded rear seats and a right passenger seat tracking to the passengers dashboard, a long span of conditioned air to contain the scope and moved at 30MPG!
As an example and figuring 1,700 miles from Texas to New York, a car getting 30 miles to the gallon, unlimited mileage, and two weeks rental; less than 1,000 dollars.
Neat huh?
Jim

Hi Turk.
The purpose of the addition to your NEAF posting is to show others how they may move a classical telescope to the 2014 NEAF and return safely home in an environment friendly method.
So far, the Unitron 510 is destined for the left coast within the next two months and hope I may keep you informed to perhaps its new position, or deliver to NEAF 2014?
But for things changing with rare instruments transport, I'm merely wishing to encourage others delivering to NEAF, or others moving a rare instrument, a safe method within the same situation as I, but two years ago to NEAF 2012.
This applies for today and the coming years too.
So if others are faced with the transfer of a rare instrument, a means to safely deliver, coast to coast?
My two cents,
jim

I've never seen a hearse for sale. Seems like an ideal transport for long refractors. And it can do double duty for those of us getting on in years.

We are still looking for people to step up and submit classic telescopes that could be part of the NEAF show 2014. Contact Jon miles through a PM if you have a scope to bring and want to participate. If you've never been to NEAF you owe it to yourself to go. It really is worth the experience. The largest telescope show in the US. Be part of the fun. We need your help.

That said we have already a selection of individuals that have committed. So far about 12-14 scopes. We can always use more. In fact we need more! Plan on coming to the show. Contact Jon.

I contacted Mike Bieler owner of Cloudy Nights and he will allow us to use the Cloudy Night's logo in the booth. I contacted him for his permission and comments about the association we would have with his company.

So it is official, although we are not being sponsored by CN, we can show our connection to them. It will probably be a 2' x 2' banner somewhere on the back wall. We will have our own 95" x 30" banner centered on the back wall. We will also have a banner for the front table. What will be on it? I'm up for suggestions. I can have both banners made for about $120 in full color and what ever image, graphics, and lettering we want. Any creative types out there want to do a little designing? I can give you some specs to start with for the large banner. Forward your questions Ideas to my email "turk@ (that cave place below).

This is done through Vistaprint.

We have had a thread about Modern Classics. Does Astronomics sell any scopes that we would consider Modern Classics, or the modern interpretation of the best old scopes? If so, maybe we could have a few on display on one side of the booth, with info on where to buy them: Astronomics.

If you go to the Vistaprint site you will be able to use their software to do all of the designing. Just choose Extra large banner. Have your images available and have at it. Here is an example of what can be done. Text has not been determined yet so do what ever you like for now. Make sure you use the "advanced" button to get to all the fonts and adjustments.

Hi Tom!

This is WONDERFUL NEWS! Congratulations to you and Jon on bringing this to fruition!

I have been away from the forum due to work and and some things at home including senior care issues with my mother. Nothing too serious just very time consuming.

It's great that you have been able to get things started so early. My job (I'm in the military) doesn't allow me to plan out that far. That's why you saw me spinning things up so close to to NEAF two years ago. When I do attend NEAF, I am always on the Stellarvue Team so it's great to hear that others will be able to focus their full attention on the Classic scopes.

I will offer up my Unitron Model 160 to bring to NEAF. It looks like I will be able to attend but it's always iffy for me until about 120 days from the event. I have some other scopes if you need to fill some holes at the last moment.

Just wanted everyone to know things are still on track for the Classic Telescope booth at NEAF 2014. I spent some time on the phone with Preston talking about the event two years ago and got a lot of information about the event and lots of good ideas on how to improve it. Preston will be helping on the sidelines which I welcome a lot.

I am still looking for design ideas for the banner signs that will be used in the booth. I also am looking for a local tee-shirt shop to do a "special" classic telescope T-shirt for those participating in the booth. I believe I've worked up a design for that and that may carry over to the banner. I would like to get as many T-shirts as (people) x (days worked). I don't want anyone doing laundry in their hotel room! So if you work 2 days, you will get 2 T-shirts. Design to follow soon.

Maybe Jon could chime in on the telescope plan. Preston is sending us his floor plan powerpoint file to help layout the 2 booths.

Organizers for the event are really not up and running at this early date, so we have little information from them other than we will have 2 booths. I want to add electric and internet for slideshow presentations and something Preston came up with, for "live posting" from the show to a thread here. Won't that be scary!

So things are still churning as we approach the spring event. I am looking forward to making this happen for our group.

Please post ideas here or if you participated last year or attended, give us your thoughts on how things can be improved.

thanks

Turk

For the banner I was thinking of lettering like one would see on ads from the 1920's or so. At the beginning could be an image of some equatorially mounted classic refractor. At the end a nice image of a reflector(Cave perhaps?). In order not to slight the cat people there could be tiny images of sandcast C8's dotting the 'i's.

It would make my life easier of the CNCT booth was next to the ATS booth. And the ATS booth has been near the Stellafane booth which is kind of neat.

Oh, yeah, we have to have at least one of the Crist miniatures there.

Which brings up the subject of the tables. We had 4 tables in the booth in 2012. On them we had a great display of Satellite scopes and a few other smaller scopes. I also had a lot of my classic eyepieces on display. I'm thinking Peter's Quantums would be on a table but we don't have much else committed so far that would be table top items. Of course we could have fewer tables and more floor space if needed. A couple of Questars would be nice. Any other ideas?

Oh, yeah, we have to have at least one of the Crist miniatures there.

Which brings up the subject of the tables. We had 4 tables in the booth in 2012. On them we had a great display of Satellite scopes and a few other smaller scopes. I also had a lot of my classic eyepieces on display. I'm thinking Peter's Quantums would be on a table but we don't have much else committed so far that would be table top items. The current application for the booths does not say how many tables you get per booth. Last year it did and I believe it was 2/booth. I will have to contact them to verify how many we can get. Of course we can always bring our own, I believe. I have some cave original documentation, like catalogs and letters I can bring. We could also print out some of the old ads run in S&T. I can also build those into a slideshow that can run on my 27" IMac I will be bringing. I thought I would grab a collection of many of the scope images from members of cloudy nights. That could be a nice project for someone out there!

It's a darn good thing that we are not adding classic ATM scopes to the display.

There wouldn't be any room and I know some of our forum members have old ATM scopes a lot bigger than mine!

I'm gonna try something here. For those of you who want to contribute to the slideshow, just drop your images at this link. It is a dropbox link and will allow large files to be transferred to me. use the largest image files you have for best quality. Let's put together a collection of telescopes and documents that will be displayed on my 27" Imac at the show!

Start dropping files in!

I hope this works.

UPDATE: It does not work! I need to see if I can make a public fodder.

Turk

Today when I was filling out the forms for the NEAF show, There is a section for a voluntary donation towards the raffle that is held during the show. I thought that maybe we could participate by coming up with a few "classic" beginner scopes (I'm sure we all have one laying around in a box doing nothing!) If we could get a few of you out there to offer them up, I would be happy to pay shipping to me before the show. We could also maybe take the nicest one and offer it up as a raffle in our own booth. It would be a free signup and require the winner to pick up (maybe we get cell phone numbers). We could even do a under 18 required for participation to get it in the hands of a young astronomer.

What are your thoughts?

Along with all the examples of the finest of their kind --the Caves, Unitrons, Questars, and the like-- there should be examples of good quality workhorses available to those with more modest budgets. The Jason 313 is perfect in that role. People need to see what the average person used back in the day, and what they, realistically, could afford now if they chose to pursue our branch of astronomy.

From my experience in marketing, I assess the first draft of our banner:

Quote:

Classic Telescopes
The "Cloudy Nights" forum
Collecting and Restoring the Classic Telescopes

The trouble is, newcomers viewing the sign will have no idea what constitutes a "classic telescope," or why they should care. Let it sound not like the objects we collect, but the people who collect them, a group folks could join. Tell where to reach us, and, briefly, what we do. This will need more thought and input from others, but for now:

Quote:

Classic Telescopes Forum
The International Community Celebrating Antique Optics
www.CloudyNights.com
Collect - Restore - Observe - Discuss - Enjoy

That last line would be in smaller type, without the dashes inserted here because our software does not allow long spaces between words.

Just got an email from Ed Seiman, head of registration at NEAF. We have our two booths. We don't know where we will be yet, but Ed wanted us to be more "exposed" this time. We may be moving to the high rent district. He confirmed that our two booths are free, but we may have to pay $125 for the electrical setup (union electricians!).

Danial Landis (a member here and professional graphic artist) is doing a wonderful job on the banners we need. We will have a large banner on the back wall (4 x 14') full color vinyl, grommets and seams, and a smaller one for the front table. The wording is not complete yet and I've taken some of your suggestions and running them by a few. The banners can be used for future years to come.

Ed Seiman wants to run a few things by me about the show. They may want to use us in some of the promotion. That's a good thing. It's almost time for those who are going to go, to be reserving the hotel room. I as most of the venders at NEAF, will be staying at the Crown Plaza hotel. I believe the NEAF rate is $114 / night. I will be there thursday thru monday.

If you want to come and work the booth, you do not have to bring a telescope to qualify. You can work the whole show, one day, heck, one hour if you like. Just show up at your time if you sign up. As I said before, I don't expect anyone to come and work and have no time to see the show, or no time to go to a lecture. If we get enough people to come and cover the hours, it will be easier on every one.

Setup on friday night is a little different. We have 4 passes to the floor. I might be able to purchase 2 more, but the NEAF board does not want this abused. There are armed guards, and anyone without a pass will be removed. Jon and I will tap 4 people that will be helping with setup. We have not chosen anyone yet, but need people that are committed to work and to showing up. Friday can go late. The bar is open, AFTER the work is done. Same with teardown that happens late afternoon (4-5) on Sunday.

So think about if you want to participate at this years show. You can email or PM Jon or I if you are planning to come. We need to know what days, hours, and how willing you are to work. I will be providing 2 tee-shirts for workers on the floor that man the booth 2 days. I may sell additional Tee-shirts to those who want them just to help cover the cost. I am not soliciting you for orders now!!!

I would like to thank John Raymond for the donation of money toward the display. He paid for half. I hope you don't mind, John. That was very nice of you.

That's the update so far. Jon might chime in to see where we stand so far with telescopes. Please remember, if you commit to bringing a telescope, please do not let us down. We are reserving space for it. The space will still be there if your telescope does not show up. In fact, we will put your name on the empty space! These have to be solid commitments. I can't go back to Ohio to grab "filler" for the floor.

I am looking forward to some great times at the show! I am excited and can't wait to meet all of you. My hotel is booked (the crown fills up quick!) and I made sure I had a ground floor! I'm carrying some big armor for the show. Let's show the world what our hobby is all about. I know we will be turning heads. If you go, you will meet the cream of the crop of manufacturers, enthusiast, astronomers, usually an astronaut, journalists, bloggers. and the best amateur astronomers around. At the Crown Bar (the best place to met) I've talked with the vice president of Meade, owner of Atik, manufactures reps from everywhere, famous astrophotographers, and individuals from all over the world. Most of all though, we will also have time to talk over our hobby with good friends, good food and a little drink (if your at the hotel, a lot of drink!).

I want to see you there. Please plan on coming. We do need your help.

Best Wishes,

Turk

So I guess I'm ready!

The order has been placed and the graphics are being finalized for the banners. Daniel Landis from here on the forum has done an outstanding job with this banner. It will be 15' x 4' and spread across both rear walls of the booth. I will post the picture as soon as it gets it's final tweaks from Daniel.

It is just outstanding!

OK, the tweaking is done and Daniel Landis has made final approval of the artwork. It is now in production. It will be done in less than 6 days and shipped. Actually there are two banners. One is 15' x 4' the other is 7 1/2' x 2'. I want to thank Daniel for the incredible amount of work and time he put into this. These banners can be used year after year to really give us a presents at the show. Job well done Daniel!

Cost of the two banners was just under $200. I think that is reasonable for the quality they are. The printer used is a commercial vinyl printer at 1000 dpi. full photographic quality. I can't wait to see them.

We were looking for a quester or two as someone could not make the NEAF show this year and couldn't bring theirs. I contacted Questar and they agreed to bring the one in their lobby for us. It is a #1-1079 3.5" from 1964. Case and all and supposedly superb optics.

No, we are not having a drawing!

Fabulous banner!

Turk, my idea seems to have fallen flat, which likely means that is the fate it deserves, if for reasons I do not yet know. What do you make of the idea of a classic star party just outside the doors of the exhibit hall? We could look at the Moon and some bright planets, so no need for perfect conditions, and no intention of replacing the classic star party being planned for a full weekend and a dark sky site. Just seems a shame that so many of us should finally meet and not find some time behind the eyepiece. To protect the integrity of the display and to keep things simple with our booth needed again in the morning, we could limit it to only scopes that would be easy to move after a long day. We could also agree only to use scopes that we have permission to move, meaning the owner would need to be present or to have given consent for the scope's use.

Beautiful banner, Tom. I wish I could be there this year, but I'll have to wait until I move back East...maybe next year!

I thought about that briefly and then realize that after a day of setup and a full day at the show, the last thing people in the booth want to do is look through a telescope. I think we will be exhausted and in need of beer.

The rules at NEAF say we have to leave the hall just after the show and it goes into lockdown with several overnight guards. No one is allowed in or out. We would not be able to use those wonderful scopes unless we bring them to our hotel room after the show. So we are all going to the crown plaza bar and all are invited. We can talk and dream of scopes and get to know each other over a cold one only to get up the next day and start all over again.

I always like telescope events, but there are several reasons not to have it at Neaf:

Neaf does not want anyone entering or leaving after hours.

I don't think the college wants a group event at night. There is the possibility of providing a Friday/Saturday evening stargazing event for the college. But...

Friday and Saturday evening I'm just too tired. I spend all day Friday driving, and all Saturday on my feet. Sunday is another full day of Neaf work, and then a long drive home. I gotta deal with Jersey traffic, Philly, Baltimore, DC beltway...its a grind.

I suggest one of the locals host a classic scope star party Wed and Thursday before Neaf. Having it right after might be a little anticlimactic.

Last year the Stokes Star Party was the weekend prior to Neaf. I wanted to go, but didn't want to make that drive two weekends in a row.

See you soon

Those of you who are going to NEAF this year and have booked a room at the Crown plaza hotel, you need to verify that you are getting the $124/night rate. Also, if you want an outside ground floor room, you need to request it now. I'm showing up early on thursday and wanted a ground floor outside to keep an eye on my van and to bring a few pieces indoors for the night. They have a window while the inside rooms face the inner courtyard and you end up keeping your blinds drawn all the time (people walking by). Plus it is nice to have some fresh spring air at night!

Truth be told, I actually can't make the stairs after being in the hotel bar.

So far this year, there are 4 members from our club that will make the trek to NEAF 2014.

If there is a classic telescopes (or similar) observing session scheduled for either Friday or Saturday night, let us know.

See y'all there.

Sweet!

I started breaking down/packing yesterday. Then I called my usual Enterprise rent a car to reserve a minivan and they had none available for that weekend. Panic! Called another store that does a lot of our business rentals and they were in the same boat. Turns out NHRA is running here that weekend and all the race teams have all the minivans within 50 miles booked up. Luckily she will pull some strings and get me one. Wheeew....

Guess I better call my rental company also. Who knows, there might be a chicken & pig festival I don't know about and all the vans are also gone.

This is going to be a great exhibit. We have a great location and Tom has done an awesome job on arranging the entire display, banners, slide show, etc.

We have a super display of classics and seeing the lineup of Unitrons, from 2.4" to 5", most of them photo equatorials, will be worth the price of admission alone.

I wish I had time to bring a scope for a night somewhere under the stars. It would have to be small but large enough to provide good views. That would also mean a good mount that is also small. I will see if the TMB will work on the Vixen porta mount. IF not, then we will just drink beer.

Hello Classic telescope fans! For those of you who can't make the show, we will be sending images and documenting what is happening at the show. I will start a new thread on Friday as we are setting up. Follow along if you can't make it, and I will bring you up close pictures of all the festivities. I wanted to do video also, and we will see how it works out.

Most of my equipment is staged in my garage as I will be renting a van to take it all to New York. I will be leaving thursday around 11:00 am for 6 hour trip. Once again, follow along here on CN if you can't make it. We will show you the daily events as live as we can get it (including the party at the bar each night!).

Please post back to us with questions and comments as we will have a wifi connection available to us. I'm getting excited to offer the collective knowledge of some first rate collectors and a first class collection of classic telescopes to the NEAF community. Stay tuned!
