>>>BEFORES and AFTERS<<<( Part 1)
      #6015733 - 08/09/13 12:34 PM Attachment (65 downloads)

We all seem to like PICTURES, so here we go. Look what came yesterday, another Tasco to restore, a 7te-5. Not as ruff as the 7t Tasco I just finished, but looks fun to restore. It is missing the Barlow, Porro prism, and the .965 visual back, but I was able to fabricate one from some spare parts.

That's a great looking mount. Excellent job. These mounts were well engineered for the 60mm scopes. They are far nicer to use than the 76mm sized version.

Nice work on that mount!! It's amazing what a good cleaning, a couple hours of buffing and polishing, and a coat or two of paint will do for these older pieces of equipment....

"She's got legs,,,She knows how to use them" (ZZ TOP)... Moving right along , finished the tripod legs today. Straightened the eyepiece tray supports and had to repaint them. Then mixed equal parts of mineral spirts and boiled linseed oil together and took 0000 steel wool dipped in mixture, and applied to the wood, then wipe of excess. P.O.C. (piece of cake)

Not to worry Dave, In fear of using all my Precious, John Paul Miller 0000 steel wool. I went to Lowes and bought some 0000 steel wool so I could save the highly collectable J. P. Miller 0000 steel wool for my heirs.

Any tips for straightening the pinion?

Well,,, James,, This is how I did it....If one side of the pinion is bent, that is fairly easy. I found the bent side and chucked it up in my drill press, then set up a dial indicator on the other end , and found the high side of the run out ,by turning the chuck by hand, (no power). Then took a small nylon mallet and tapped the high side end of the pinion and checked the run out again. repeat and repeat till true. Hope this helps Tom

Tom, thank you also from me for that ingenious tip - I had a bent pinion on one side of my 7TE-5 focuser as well, and eyeballed it best I could as I tapped it sraight, sandwiched between wood for protection. But of course it still has a slight wobble after my best efforts. - To the drill press it is! By the way, you did an incredible job straightening the metal spreader tabs that hold the eyepiece tray - I used a mallot, and it still shows a slight ripple. Your telescope truly does look like something out of a time machine.

Steve

Thanks Steve , for the compliment, But if both sides of the pinion are bent ,I have set the pinion up between a set of V blocks useing the dial indicator to indicate the high side of the run out once again. I use a nylon of wood 1/4" dowel rod and small tack hammer to pinpoint my strikes to the high side, on both sides of the pinion. Until true or at least very close.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits applied with 0000 steel wool do for the tripod legs? I have some tripod legs in great shape that I've applied Liquid Gold to and intended to wax. I have another set of dark tripod legs from a Tasco 7TE that have numerous scratches down to the wood, below the stain. Would the linseed oil etc be useful in either of these situations? Or do the darker legs need restaining?

BTW, what finish of black paint looks best - satin or gloss?

Larry, I'm not one to upset original paint or finish ,unless it is absolutely necessary . I found that in restoring antique AM radios, the wooden cases finish had alot of dirt, grime, and scratches on them. I read that if you mix equal parts of mineral spirts or terpintine with boiled linseed oil and apply lightly with 0000 steel wool, this would lift the dirt and grime and hide alot of the scrathes also. It's also good to remove a paint scuff on the wood finish and revitalize the clear finish.

Gloss or satin black paint? you just have to judge for yourself, if it's has alot of shine, go with gloss, if it don't I would say satin.

Chips and scratches, I use a 10/0 sable brush, mix the paint to match and fill just the chip or scratch with paint and let dry . Then wet sand with 2000 grit, just the fill, til level, polish ,then bury it in wax..
All the above takes alittle longer to do,,,,BUT if classic telescopes are anything like the classic bicycles I also restored, collectors prefer ORIGINAL PAINT.
Remember.... "They are only original once...You can repaint everyday." Good book...The furniture Doctor by George Grotz

Thanks again Tom, success! In the absence of a drill press that was set up I chucked it up in a lathe and after a few taps with my fine adjusting tool (nylon tipped hammer) I have a straight pinion. I also have a straight sun screen support rod now as well. I'm happy!

Well, lets put this thing together and take a look.
I had the 7TE-5 out for first light last night. I must agree with CharlieB I like the 7T alittle better than the 7TE-5. Good star test on both, but the 7T just seemed abit more user friendly, and tack sharp star images . If it's clear tonight I might try both on the moon. I'm sure the extra FL. of the 7TE-5 might have a slight edge over the 7T we shall see.
It was a sunny day here in the Buckeye State (Ohio), so I took some pictures outside of both the 7TE-5 on the left, and the 7T on the right.
Still working on the wooden case for the 7TE-5.

Hello Tom, could you post a close up photo of the leg chains and associated hardware on the 7T scope? Do you know if they are the original ones, or did you buy/fabricate your own? What is the length of the chains for each leg...10-12 inches?

Thanks, Stephen

Awesome!! I always cringe when someone "improves" a finish with absolutely incorrect "Urethane" or so forth almost as much as I do when some idiot guts an antique floor radio to make a tacky ersatz liquor cabinet out of it!

If the finish is totally trashed, sure, years of mouse pee out in the barn can ruin a lot of things past saving, but most stuff can be brought back from the dead with just a little elbow grease.

I'm very interested in trying out the linseed oil/mineral spirits. Thanks!

Ahem, I take that somewhat personally, as I've sprayed more than one tripod with that aforementioned absolutely incorrect finish, as well as used also equally incorrect modern wood oils of various types on various astronomical and other "restorations". In many years of vintage restorations and repairs, I've seldom encountered any oil finishes at all....they just aren't real-life durable enough. In addition, I've sanded off the authentic rust from more than one piece and sprayed it with totally modern semi-gloss paint, and have also removed and replaced vintage hard-as-rock grease now and then.....My recently 'ruined, by some accounts' Kasahi scope's tripod had a strange yellowish varnish-stain of some sort on it (what was left of it) that I sanded some and recoated, splotchy look and all..... but on the other hand, I rubbed with rubbing compound the OTA, focuser, and dew shield, and then waxed them.

Please keep in mind that the organic varnishes and lacquers and shellacs of old are no longer made, except in small and very pricy batches, usually used by musical instrument restorers and the like. Some of them practically require a hazmat suit to apply. Also, many manufacturers had secret-formula tinted finishes that are very difficult to duplicate.

Would I polyurethane a 400-year-old violin? of course not!
Would I urethane a 30-year-old ex-broken cheap one I got at the dump and hand it to the 12-year-old up the road? Yep.

Would I strip-to-the-aluminum a chipped ,scratched, oxidized, 50-year-old mount with the slo-mo's frozen into their bushings and repaint it? Many on this forum have, and gotten many compliments for how nice they look. Would I buff out and apply nitrocellulose lacquer to a truly antique Brashears scope? Probably not. But, some do.

There's a difference between a hack job and putting hours into carefully cleaning the crud out of the corners with a toothbrush and a dental pick and refinishing it as close to vintage as possible. If you're lucky and got a really nice one like Tom did, well then, spit-and-polish will do the trick. That's not always the case.

Ya know, my 55 year-old Asahi (Pentax) 60mm is regarded as a higher-end scope of its era, but.....the mount really needs to be - and will get - shimmed so it doesn't wiggle around, the slo-mo's, even carefully cleaned and regreased and adjusted, don't work smoothly, the tripod is wobbly, the finder is so small as to be pretty much useless on anything dimmer than Jupiter, and the optics, even used with more modern higher-performance EP's, won't split the double-double.... Most of the scopes we revere were mass-produced, export-market scopes, likely as not built on machines worn out and no longer able to make precision parts because they had run 7/24 for 20 years making military products, assembled with the knowledge that 2/3rds of them wouldn't catch photons more than a dozen times, and I truly wonder how many of 'em that we have oh-so-carefully restored will catch photons more than a dozen more times.

Not all of us have the time, the skill, or the desire, to be perfectionists. Not everything needs to be, or indeed can ever again be, museum quality. Each and every scope saved from the dumpster is a good thing, let's celebrate its rebirth!

So that's my two cents, but as my avatar states, I'm a curmudgeon.........

Russ

Well its been fun, but this project is done. I finished the box , or case , if you will, today. This wooden case is not in "Like New" condition. I opted for the "Clean Distressed" look, "Antique" look. No heavy sanding went on here. No new stain and finish either. A few dings and scratches hear and there, I like that. I call them beauty marks, After all it took 44 years to obtain all that beauty or battle scars,, what ever way you look at it. I have scars also it took 60 years to get mine. and I'm no beauty. I just went over it with the old 0000 steel wool and equal parts of mineral spirts and boiled linseed oil trick, and finished with Johnson's paste wax, added the brass corner protectors and buffed all hardware and screws and polished.

The End, "Thank You, Thank You Very Much" Tom

Nice job on the case, too. I forgot though, that the 7TE-5 case used styrofoam inserts. I have a trio of 7TEs on the project shelf. I was looking to see how you might have replaced the green foam-turned-to-chauk in the case.

Not to mention bringing a diamond in the ruff back to a usefull state once again. I get as much joy out of restoreing an old telescope , as I do looking through one. Restorations help me pass the time of cloudy days and nights here in Ohio.
