Free Anti-Virus program?
      #2426159 - 05/29/08 07:44 AM

Hi All,

Any recommendations for a free anti virus program? I've been using AVG for several years, but with version 8, it will not scan e-mail after 30 days.
Kinda defeats the purpose, IMO.

Thanks

Allen

Not sure about actual "free" Antivirus programs out there, but check with your Internet Service Provider.

Comcast specifically offers a pretty robust McAfee Security Suite for free to every subscriber, so perhaps your ISP does something similar.

Good luck!

I live in a semi rural area, so cable or DSL are not offered.

AVG Free was a great free anti virus program, I don't understand why they would change now. I guess they figure they have a lot of people hooked and it's time to make a little money.

That's discouraging news, I just installed version 8 and didn't realize email scanning would stop after 30 days. I wonder if v7 is still available somewhere.

Allen, this is the program I have used for quite some time with great sucess. It automatically updates itself, almost daily.

Trend Micro House Call is free online. I haven't needed any antivirus software since moving to Linux, but I have friends that still use Windows exclusively and I have to occasionally "fix" their computers for them due to malware and viruses and House Call is what I use for that.

I use Avast and have been happy with it. Zone Alarm firewall is another good free program.

Try A-Squared Free ( http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ ).

I've been using it and AVG for a number of years now. Best protection however is a router between your PC and the internet...much better than a software firewall. Second best protection is to use an online email account instead of downloading email to your PC. Yahoo mail automatically virus scans anything you download.

That's what I thought. My copy of AVG scans all my emails and I'm happy with it.

That's why I stayed with AVG 7.5. I have Avast on another system. Both work well and have not had any problems.

Good Luck.

Just take the "i" off the front of the URL when it gets to the "not found" page. Or here it is without:

I will second Carol's pic. I changed from AVG a week ago. DLaw, I believe grisoft is dropping support on 7.5 at the end of the month. That is why, after reading the forums at grisoft, I made the switch.

Thanks for all suggestions!

I've been very happy with AVG and I thought it was a little strange that AVG Ver 8 would not scan e-mails after 30 days. I just happened to come upon the info on download.com in the review section when I was getting ready to download version 8, so I thought the info was accurate.
I will check out Avast and Avira.
I'm on dial up and AVG version 8 is a 45 mb download, so you know how long thats going to take...
Avast and Avira are a 21 mb download, so I think I'll take a good look at those two.

Thanks very much everyone!
