That's good to hear. Can you tell us what astro related applications and devices you are using?

Their are lots of sites for custom built systems for W7, also generally custom built system can handle older OS depending on the MB.
Their also better quality then off the shelf systems especially when its an integrated MB.
I just recently added a 2gig 16x PC Video card, it literally is 10X faster then the integrated Video card the MB came with. Its like having a new machine again being so much faster.

I just bought the Lenovo Y500 yesterday. 16gb ram, 1tb hard drive, i7, NVidia graphics card, windows 8. I downloaded backyard eos, registax, and stellarium so far and they work just fine. I'm on it right now actually. I'm about to get starry night pro. so I don't know whats so bad about windows 8 so far, its a little different, the start menu is actually tiles now but I have xbox live so its not new to me lol. I kind of like it so far.

I am at work right now but off the top of my head:
-Stellarium
-Orbitron
-Heavensat
-Cartes Du Ciel
-DeepSkyStacker
-ASCOM telescope control for LXD-55
-Craterlet
-Meade Autostar Updater
-a bunch of software for the webcam to capture full HD video for stacking

I also had a few other pieces of software I can't remember the names of because I didn't find them to be useful in satellite tracking. They did work though.

I installed Windows 8 about 4 months ago and like it fine. It recognized my WindowsXP install and gives the option of booting into either. At first I was booting back to XP to find this or that but I haven't booted to XP in months now. It contains a pretty complete driver set, certainly better than XP when it first came out. I have no regrets installing it, it is fast, boot up, restart are quick and I haven't found anything I can't run yet.
I"ve found the charms bar to be an annoyance, getting the mouse cursor too close to the monitor edge will make it pop out there but I"m getting pretty good at avoiding that.

I like it so far, I like the start menu, I just look around at the different news articles I have set up and read them all change and pop up, i'm going to attempt to install starry night pro next week and photo shop, we will see what happens. I also found the charms to be annoying, sometimes the start menu will just pop up or anything that's in that menu, but overall I kind of like it so far.

I heard today that their is a drastic reduction in PC sales since W8 popped up. Companies find it too costly to retrain people, and in general its not quick to relearn a new OS.
I wonder how long this will last and if they will open an option to stick to W7 (once they have made their money on the new system).

You can't really blame the drop in sales on Win8 no matter if it's good or bad.
Tablets are taking over from laptops and laptops from desktops.

I had an appt. with my doctor yesterday. He's in a nice, modern clinic, but I noticed that one of the desktops was XP. But then if my laptop hadn't crashed, I'd still have XP. Got 7. Like it.

If my dog could use Windows 7 I could train him how to use Windows 8 before we went through 4 dog biscuts. I simply fail to see much difference between the two.

Windows 8 is either love or hate it. I'm primarily in the hate it camp for business and technical reasons; but if it does what you need it to do, by all means go for it.

I'm not such a Luddite as a local grocery store where the cash register boots Windows 95!
