Well, Since to my eyes the moon tonight seems brighter than ive seen this summer the views tonight were to say the least BAD. BUT, i did view the Coathanger and ncg 457. That was about it. I always get a kick out of the Owl cluster. I waved back!!

Just as the nights are predicted to turn clear - guess what ?
A NEAR - FULL MOON !!!
What makes it even more galling is that we're near harvest-moon time, so that the moon rises only a few minutes later each evening as it moves north along the ecliptic.
Looks like showy open clusters and doubles for the next few days then ...

From my latitude the moon barely gets above 20 degrees. Most of the sothern sky is a no go, but otherwise I am ok

Brings to mind the old Creedence Clearwater Revival tune, "Bad Moon Rising" doesn't it? I heard about the wildfire problems up in your area, and firefighters are getting stung by swarms of bees too.

Taras: Boy, I had completely forgotten that tune! Now, I'll be humming it when that "bad moon is rising"! Yes, this is a very bad fire, #1 priority in the nation. And, the yellowjackets are the meanest, this time of year!

Yes the orange/red moon was quite the sight last night rising in the southeast through the smoke out in the valley from our wildfire burning in Manning park. Tonights full moon is the biggest of 2006. Should be quite the sight tonight with the current conditions.

Don't I know it, I'm very allergic to yellow jackets, who like to build massive nests in the ground here. I got stung 13 times at once in both legs and it felt like I was shot multiple times in the legs, it took a week for the severe pain to subside. Then I got stung once and my leg swelled up to twice it's normal size. Now I avoid them, I'm afraid I might go into cardiac arrest the next time. My mom was also savagely attacked by yellow jackets, 40 of them got her while thousands swarmed all over the lawnmover, whose vibrations prompted them to attack. Be careful out there!

The moon was out last night and very bright.I have never viewed the full moon before but it's been cloudy here for 2 weeks so I went out for an hour or so.I got to see the craters inside of Plato clearly at 240x.Since my dob doesn't track I just let the moon slowly pass again and again.It feels like you're in a hot air balloon or a shuttle looking down.I also like the way the seeing get crystal clear for a few moments,bringing out even more detail.I hope the moon and planets never lose their magic one feels if you haven't observed them in a while.

Last night was clear, but once Luna cleared the neighbours' roof, it was a 'doubles only' night.
Up till then, I was able to see the Delphinus diamond and six stars in Ursa Minor with the naked eye, giving a ZLM of 4.5.
Planetaries were not too badly hit by Luna, as M57 was still impressive and NGC 7009 was easy, but most deep-sky stuff was diminished. M23 and M25 in Sagittarius were still good soon after twilight, and M39 and NGC 457 were impressive, but I struggled to see more than 40 stars in M11, and I needed averted vision to spy outlying stars in M13.
Top doubles were Rasalgethi, Izar, Albireo, Zeta Aquarii, plus many lesser-known examples from the STF and other catalogues.

The moon was obscured by clouds, but here was this morning's sunrise! The main fire in Montana (there are several), is up to 195,000 acres! So, our sun & moon look pretty weird.

Wow, that is an amazing picture! It is too bad that the fire has destroyed so much out by you, I hope the fires get put out real soon, I have heard (on the national news) that it has affected a lot of people and ruined lots of land and property. Lets hope it is all over very soon!
I'll bet before the fires were there, you had a real nice spot to observe from. Looks like a nice location!

Thursday night was a very bright full moon here too. Normally I don't look at the full moon through a telescope because a reversed afterimage remains. That's why forums like this one are great. You'll have something else to do when the moon's full, LOL.

Good Grief!! When you say bright moon, you really mean it! My full moons arn't nearly that bright, they just cast a soft glow in the shadows. Yours is like the "Midnight Sun" in Alaska!
