HI all,
Like to observe deep sky objects? Like to write? If the answer to both questions is yes, drop me a line. I have a little project I want someone to tackle. I'm also willing to send you the astro book of your choice from Amazon for your assistence.
Thanks

Hello there Allister,
Perhaps, you may wish to specify some pre-requisite. For instance,
o Skill level of the observer (must be over 18 years of observing ?) o Minimum aperture mandate (20-inch perhaps ?) o Sky darkness (NLM mag 4.0 ?) o Etc.
Thanks, Ron B[ee]

Hey Ron,
Pre-reqs are quite simple. Be able to write, have a reasonable level of experience observing deep sky objects and want to help out. That pretty much covers it.

Allister;
Ron B[ee] has some good points there
Having a scope over 20" sounds reasonable to me.
And are we talking English only here?

Ron(x2),
We'll start with English - bonus points for anyone who can translate into Spanish.
20" sounds reasonable to me too but we are mostly concerned about some deep sky stuff surrounding a small scope and a beginner.
Speaking of which - anyone on this group use one of the big guns?

Hey,
I always think of a "big gun" as starting at 18". Don't know where or how I got this definition stuck in my mind.
My biggest is a 12.5" dob. Like Tom, I can only wish for something really big.
Rob - did you build your 20"?

Ubly is a little village (yes village) in the upper thumb area of Michigan, 10 miles south of Bad Axe, if that helps... If you were wondering where because of Tom's Yooper talk, don't be alarmed that we're not in the UP. He graduated from Michigan Tech, and I'm working on graduating from Northern right now, so that's why we're excused to talk like Yoopers. BTW, I'm makin pasties for supper tonight! =)

Have you taken your scope to Lake of Clouds yet? Years ago I tried downhill skiing on telemark ski's there. Just about killed myself.
There was a high risk of hitting deer on the way down. Herds of them in the woods that you got a good look at as you road the lift up to the top. Like squirrels in front of cars, they would bolt in front of folks, or right after a group, across the slope into the woods on the other side.
I firmly believe animals have a sense of humor.

I would be glad to help out if I can. I have an 8" SCT and a TV Ranger available and I enjoy observing deep sky objects. I am no pro but I enjoy it. Let me know if I can assist but before I jump in with both feet I would like to know what the project is.

I'm not sure what it is your really looking for, but I enjoy writing though I'm not the best. I have a Meade 12 LX200GPS and I just purchased a TAO-130, which has not arrived yet. I should qualify as a beginner. I have only been observing with a telescope since last August, but love the night sky and setup every chance I get.

Hey guys,
Wow - we've had a number of people volunteer to help with this project! I really appreciate the offers. Right now Ron B[ee] has taken ownership of the project and you can contact him and see if he needs any help.
We'll be doing other projects starting in a week, so stay tuned if you are interested.

Ron, Need a DSO observer? Been doin' it for 40 years--have 1000's of observations at sites with 6.4+ ZLA. Only have 8" of aperture but regularly reach mag 15.1-15.5. Let me know if that's deep enough. Don

Well, it's been published . Sorry it took so long . http://www.cloudynights.com/beginners/beginners_deep1.htm
I'd like also to thank all of you guys who volunteered. Looking to "share" the next phase to the next victim , oops, strike that I meant "volunteer" , Ron Boe (being the next one down the list) has accepted to do Part II - objects for the cold wintery nights (I hear he likes the snow much more than I do). Thank you Ron and go Brother Ron, go .
So if you have any questions on Part I, don't call the wrong Ron B[ee] - call the right Brother Ron Boe .

Ron Boe <sp> did a terrific jobs with the summer delights! I appreciated his easy going approach to helping people find these glorious DSOs I also liked the way he didn't slam people who use GOTO's
<soap box on> Not as a critisim to Ron, but his approach pointed out one of the things I find most annoying about telescopes today. If he used a equatorial mount rather than a Dob, then find things like M27 would be easy. Find the reddish orange star in the tip of sagitta (nu sge) and move only in declination 2.5 deg. Using a 24 Meade with my 8" f7 scope gives a 1 deg field, so I can move 2.5 eyepiece fields north. I have a table of all the messier objects and RA and Dec offsets from "bright" stars Pushing around a Dob at random to find objects is much to much work for me.
<soap box off>
Congrats Ron you did a terrific job.

Thanks Bob for your kind words .
Actually and secretly, I use an EQ mount myself . But when writing the article, I couldn't help but to accommodate the fact that there are probably lots of Dobsters out there !

Ron;
You covered quite a bit with very nice drawings to set a level of expectation to ground the new observer. Certainly wished I had been grounded before I bought my first scope.
I have a couple months now to collect my wits and favorite winter DSO's. After your excellent start I'm going to need the time!
Bob; as you have probably guessed by now, there are too many ronb's here. You can tell us apart by my lack of an EQ mount. While I'm tempted to remain handicapped for the sake of identity, I like your method of star hopping. Although a Telerad would be a great aid for EQ challenged observers.
Also; I find it a godsend to have GOTO in my skys here in Phoenix. After trying like mad to find things with my Pronto, the extra 9" of the NS11 and it's GOTO really kept me in the hobby. Some objects still elude me because of the light pollution but others are now on the table so to speak. I've even seen Uranus and Neptune now! But truth be told, I still prefer the Pronto and my 15X70's for the backyard. Too easy to set up for such a lazy old fart/geezer.
I'm glad Ron B[ee] took the summer objects for this forum as my favorite summer objects tend to found at beaches; not really appropriate for this group.
Finally; Ron B[ee], which EQ do you use? Would you recommend it or something else?
