Favorite Fall Galaxies (non-messier)?
      #3318655 - 09/06/09 02:49 PM

Ok folks, I'd love to hear your favorites. I'll kick off a few:

NGC 891
Persus Cluster
NGC 253
NGC 7331

--------------------
Hyperbole - undoubtedly the best thing ever.

NGC 7626 and 7619 are definitely worth looking at. Their neighbourhood is pretty nice too
NGC 7332 and NGC 7339 are also very nice, although I've had trouble with 7339.
Can you tell I've been visiting the flying horse recently?

Hmmmm, I would have to say that would be NGC-7331, NGC-891 and NGC-253. Others include NGC-7479, NGC-6946, NGC-779 and the NGC-7332 and 7339 pair. The NGC-7619, 7623 and 7626 trio is a nice trio of galaxies that is within reach of an 8-inch from a good site.

Certainly NGC891 and 7331.

NGC1023 is kind of cool with the line of stars below it.

NGC7332 and 7339 make a nice pairing.

But you've already got all of those.

About the only thing I can add is the chain centered on Arp331:

I should probably add that if I was observing in the southern hemisphere, I'd include the Telescopium group (NGC 6851-6870), the Pavo Group (brightest member NGC 6876), the Phoenix Group (NGC 89-92), etc. But then again, they would be favorite *spring* galaxies

Should be. In my 12" I was in a green (probably yellow by now) zone, with dozens of streetlights nearby that I blocked off using trees and walls. Both of them were fairly easy direct vision (although not bright direct vision) at about 35 degrees altitude.

Seems like I missed 7623! 7611 was within reach though, so that'd make it more like a quartet I imagine.

NGC7331 and Stephen's Quintet - about ten galaxies within the field of a wide angle eyepiece;
NGC 278, 185, and 147 - all in a line above M31
NGC 404 (next to Mirbach)
NGC 891 (I always hear the "Outer Limits" theme music when I see this one)
M33 (always worth an extended look)
And a whole bunch of small NGC galaxies in Triangulum

I have seen NGC-7611 too, but not at the same time as the other three galaxies. The third galaxy in the drawing I assume is NGC-7623 because it's the brightest one I can find near enough the other two to be visible in the field.

My favorite fall galaxy has got to be NGC 253, the Great Sculptor Spiral. The first time I saw it as a youngster, I was desperately trying to find it with my little 2.4 inch refractor. I finally did, but it was found using a pair of 7-12x35 binoculars and not the main scope. In my 10 inch from my dark sky site, it is just loaded with dark detail which I take my time absorbing at close to 200x. NGC 7331 is nice, as are a few others, but the one that really makes fall observing memorable has to be NGC 253. Clear skies to you.

I'll second--or is that, thrid--the nominations of NGC 6946 and NGC 7479 as Fall favorites. These show wonderful spiral structure in moderate aperture. NGC 253 is a big, impressive object that can be enjoyed even under moderately dark skies. NGC 7217 and NGC 7331 round out my top five non-Messier Fall galaxies for moderate aperture...for this week

Bill --

Arp 331 is in Pisces. The brightest galaxy is NGC383 at Mag 11.9.

My guess is it'd be a struggle with a 10" SCT from a slightly light-polluted site. The sketch was done with a 16" from NELM 5 skies, which suggests you're going to want something on the order of NELM 6 or NELM 6.5 with a 10".

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

Between the Pegasus square and Pisces. I was asking if I had a chance with an 8 inch and the response was encouraging.

I've seen Arp 331, and spotted NGC-383, 380 and 379 with a 10-inch. From a site in the blue zone they weren't exactly easy objects, and I apparently missed NGC-384 and NGC-385, which are about as bright as the others. I'm planning to return to this group at the earliest opportunity.

Thanks for the locations. Maybe I'll try the 7619-7623-7626 group when Pegasus gets higher in the evening sky in October/November. Jerry..Arp 331 may be out of my reach unless I find darker skies. Thanks again.

I used my 16" LB ...... NGC 7331 look nice but not easy to see several faint galaxies around NGC 7331 in the yellow zone. I used 19 mm eyepiece to see faint blob Stephan's Quintet.
NGC 253 look nice!

It is the Pegasus-1 galaxy cluster with the center about 2.6 degrees northwest of Theta Piscium (on the Pegasus/Pisces border). The center of the group is roughly R.A. 23h 20m Dec. + 8 deg. 14', and the whole group is only about 40' arc across. I managed to pick up about 12 of the cluster's galaxies in my 9.25 inch SCT at 98x while observing at the Nebraska Star Party, although looking back on my notes, I may have missed logging one. Of the galaxies in the group, only the two central ellipticals NGC 7619 (11.0) and NGC 7262 (11.1) are all that obvious, with tiny NGC 7611 coming in at around 12.5 and most of the rest being roughly 13th magnitude and fainter. Under light pollution, you may only catch the bright central ellipticals. The others you kind of have to work at a little even from a dark sky site, although you should see more than just the center two. I just put in my 24mm Panoptic (98x, 40' arc field of view) and went to work. Under some skyglow, you might want to increase the power a little to maybe 140x, as that may help the fainter ones stand out a bit better. Below is a somewhat processed and cropped DSS Quick-V image of the group with north at the top (the brightest star shown in the lower part of the field (HD 219949) is magnitude 6.9). Good luck and clear skies to you.

I've got to agree. I fell in love with NGC 253 decades ago when I saw the color photo of it in the old Time-Life "The Universe": it looked like a blue and silver dollar coin rolling through space! About 12 years later I was delighted to discover how easy it was to spot in my 10x50 binocs and that it has the same basic shape as in the photo--a kind of thick sliver, with that pair of field stars conspicuous toward one end. And it's in such an interesting galaxy group with NGC's 55 and 247, a couple of giant binoc targets. And the professionals are discovering such interesting things about star formation and stellar associations from their photometric studies of it--

7331 was one of my first non-Messier galaxies, so I will always rate it at the top. I also like 7814, 253, and 891.

I also like to turn my scope to the north and look at 2300, 2276, and 2268 in Camelopardalis.

Well it would seem that NGC 7331 is a landslide winner, mentioned at least 16 or 17 times.
NGC 891 was mentioned probably 6 or 7 times.
NGC 7332 and 7339 were both mentioned at least 5 or 6 times.
While NGC 404 , 1023 both were mentioned at least 3 or 4 times.
Many others were mentioed once or twice.
My question is , I also use an 8 inch dob, though its coatings are starting to dim, so assume its the equivalent of an 6 inch reflector.
How many of the above can I expect to see from a so so dark sky site.
And does any one know where I can find finder charts for the ones I can expect to see?
Im guessing 7331 would be visible, lol.

In John Johnson's 20 inch Obsession at the Nebraska Star Party, I was viewing over 30 galaxies in the Pegasus-1 group. Here is a chart from MEGASTAR of the area of the Pegasus-1 galaxy cluster with all galaxies with photographic magnitudes of 15.6 and brighter shown:

I completely forgot about NGC 55 and NGC 247 when I made my list.

Andy,

The only thing I can say is to pick one and give it a try. They are getting low now, but if you can see M81 and M82, swing your scope and try to pick up the companion, 3077. It's face on and how well you can see it will give you a hint.

7331 was the first one I picked and I was very happy to find it. Then I tried a few more in Pegasus and noted which were easy and those I couldn't see in my scope. Depending on your latitudue, the galaxies in Camelopardalis are nice targets to try and they might be visible most of the year.

I use the S&T Pocket Sky Atlas.

Best of luck in your search.

Ron

I haven't taken a close look at Pegasus I since the mid to late '80's, but at the time I logged exactly 30 galaxies with my old 17.5-inch, which is in close agreement with David's numbers. Time to go back, though, with a detailed Megastar chart and hunt for the really dim members.

I can confirm that some of the Pegasus I cluster can be caught in an 8 inch from a moderately light polluted garden with dewing eyepieces (albeit with a clear, moonless sky). 7619 a confident sighting (with averted vision) and 95% certain I got 7626. Quite a straightforward star-hop in the finder.

These are my first galaxies outside the Local Supercluster. However massive the Virgo Cluster gets these guys will be receding from us for ever!

Hi Tom,

Before answering your question, it all depends on your location, darkeness of skies and equipment available.

September, IMHO is not a great month cuz so many of the galaxies at or near zenith are small and/or low in surface brightness or magnitude.

My vote for September would be NGC 7331.

If you can "bur the midnight oil" this month and get out there after midnight...I am retired so I can...my October list has some much better candidates:

NGC253, 6946 and 24

Hope this helps.

Keep lookin up......Michael

How about NGC 4565, NGC 4631, and NGC 4656?

I'll also go with NGC 7331 and NGC 253.

I agree with NGC7331 for a favorite Fall galaxy. We observed it last Saturday and when I'm in that area of the sky, I always go for Stephan's Quintet, which is close by.

I don't know why i do this as they certainly don't look like the Hubble picture (eye candy) and many times it's even a challenge to see them at all.

I have seen all 5 with my 13" from a dark high mountain site, but can't seem to do it at my home site. Just not dark enough, but I can usually see 3 - Bruce

NGC 4565, 4631, and 4656 are spring sky galaxies, so they aren't exactly easy to see in the fall (unless it is very late in the fall and you are a very early riser). Clear skies to you.

Added 7611 just now. So obvious once you know where not to look directly at! Shocking to be able to see permanently receding galxies through light pollution with only a moderate scope.

I got out last night with my 10 inch dob and was surprised that I was able to see some pretty faint NGC galaxies from my light polluted yard. NGC 891 was extremely faint but as it got higher in the sky I was just able to make out its elongated shape but darkening the background sky with a higher power ep. Here is a list.

NGC 1023
NGC 891
NGC 7331
NGC 7332
NGC 7457
NGC 7448
NGC 7479
NGC 7606
