Minimaps II - Vectorial print outputs
      #907640 - 04/11/06 08:54 AM

Sometime ago I shared here a collection of 5800 small maps showing the surrounding area of selected deep sky objects. It was a nice first trial, but it was not enough. I wanted vectorial, high-quality maps, and for some time I have been reckoning how to get it.

Well, I have been working hard in my deep sky charting software and I would like to share it with everybody (it is freeware), introducing the first results and to get some feedback. The software (CNebulaX) is very powerful, and manages 25 million stars from GSC 1.2 and more than one million deep sky objects. Everything (databses, software, etc) can be downloaded from my website. A direct link to the downloading area is here. Everybody is invited to get the freeware. I really hope you will like it. Read carefully the instructions for setting it up.

Returning to the minimaps, have a look to these first outputs (that are not minimaps, but this will be the style), that I have prepared as PDF files (view them at least at 150% to appreciate the details):

(1) Constellation of Leo as a B/W output, PDF file #1. A small cropped area is this:

(2) Constellation of Leo in a color PDF output, PDF file #2

(3) 2 degrees area surrounding M51, showing all HyperLEDA galaxies in a B/W PDF output, PDF file #3. An excerpt is this:

Now I think the new project is perfectly feasible. I still have to work in the program, but these results are quite encouraging. What do you think?

Jose -

You are the MAN. Wow.

I'm going to download this now. This is a lot to absorb at one time for an amateur like myself. I will post some more feedback once I have a chance to play with the program. It certainly looks impressive. And to give it away for free! On the behalf of the amateur astronomy community, let me be the first to say : "..Thank you Jose!..."

Clear dark skies to you...and again, WOW.

Oop. 20 megabyte download. That will have to wait until late tonight. I have a really S-L-O-W dialup, so I'll let the PC download it while I sleep...

Thanks again...

The software looks great but I can't install it. I have instaled Visual Basic 6.0 and downloaded file from website but it just doesn't want to work. Until this problem is resovled Cartes du Ciel is my bread and butter.

I have tried to download this software before. It looks *fantastic*. However, I cannot find anywhere that will allow me to download the 'Visual Basic 6.0 Runtime Modules and OLE Automation Libraries'. Please help!
Thanks,

Sorry for the delay, I had some holidays (more than a week) , but I was without internet connection

First of all, this is a link to the download area of the Microsoft website, with the VB6SP6 runtime files. Just run it in your PC, restart the computer, and then install CNebulaX (and restart the PC again).

I will link in a few days a new update with a MSI installation file (in English, finally). The new files will include comets, asteroids and planets ephemeredes. This is an example of what the 1.05 rs is doing just now (in the screenshot, the trail of Pojmanski comet). The database includes the latest JPL files for comets and asteroids and can go extremely deep (300,000 asteroids and 2,500 comets):

The program requires re-starting the computer to register the windows controls. If you do not restart it, you will get a runtime error. Also, the screen font is sometimes not well registered. It is easy to solve. All is explained in the FAQ and in the SETUP areas of the website. Anyway, my intention is linking a new setup in English with in MSI format, much more friendly and flexible. I have to finish before the Pluto ephemeredes and solve a problem in the implementation of the VSOP87 theory, that produces slight errors.

(thelittleman) I am glad to know that CNebulaX is working fine. The installation problems come from the (awful) Microsoft's applications deploy system. I have few chances to alter it; for this reason, I want to try another kind of setup system.

I will link the new files in a few days, as soon as I finish the ephemeredes for Pluto. The prediction system for comets and asteroids is just perfect, I'm sure you will like it. Plotting orbital trails is extremely useful to find small asteroids.

Admittedly, I am still waiting to download. My dialup is GLACIAL, and it will take no less than 12-14 hours to download the program - not including the Microsoft VB files. I have to make sure this is something I am going to actually use before I spend the next 2 days downloading and tweaking it. A good example is Cartes Du Ciel (CDC) - everybody ranted and raved about how great it is. Personally, I don't like the labelling options and I don't like how the charts look. But it's the lack of labelling options that was the deal killer...And I want to make sure this program is not going to be a repeat.

jr.,
Do you have the ability to prevent the overlap of labels? Many are not readable on your examples. I think that would make this worthy of a "sticky" on the top of the Stellar Media Forum under "Free Star Charts".

Hi everybody,

I have placed the promissed update for downloading, including the databases for comets and minor planets, the full VSOP87 theory, the 1.05.48 exe file, the new handbook, and some other files. So this is the link to a ZIP file containing the update to the built 1.05.48. The folder structure stored in the ZIP file should be preserved, and the old files in your setup should be replaced with the new ones. The new EXE is appreciably faster than the one you will have installed as well, since I have removed some redundancies in the flow. I hope you will like it !!!.

About the labels, they are placed without paying attention to the background because this would slow down the program to a non-acceptable level. The number of objects is adapted to the magnification and can be altered by the user. My idea was to build a system that allowed an easy way to get the data even in overlapped areas. If you right-click near an object symbol, the program will show a small card with the data. Then, if there is any object overlapped, just click on the [<<] and [>>] buttons in the toolbox to change the focus to those near objects and display their card. It is simple and very effective, even in very clumped areas. Also, the zoom system dragging the mouse down (zoom in) or up (zoom out) is very comfortable: you can quickly expand any crowded area (or use the zoom swap button (exploration/detail zoom). The zoom system is one of the nicest features of the program. The labels, naturally, can also be disabled. Also, they can be expanded to list instead the names, the magnitudes, sizes, classification, etc. It is very flexible.

You can also alter the number of displayed deep sky objects, stars, star size, etc, in both the screen and printed maps. I like for instance writing a magnitude offset of -0.25 to get less stars in my notebook, but in the desktop PC the screen is larger, and I want more stars, so there, the offset is +0.50 instead. Well, all these issues are easy to customise.

About the downloading speed, I have no other place to mirror the files, but I am opened to other possibilities. The current server belongs to my university, whose broadband is extremely wide and the speed, very, very fast (>400 Mb/s).

Glenn Becker had yesterday the initiative of starting a public yahoo forum for CNebulaX. If anyone wishes joining us for betatesting, developing new features, etc, he/she is very welcome. The URL can be found in this link (yahoo forum)

Don, I put the thread here because the program is very oriented -and developed thinking in- deep sky observers (I am an enthusiast of deep sky), and because it is the continuation of the Minimaps thread. It would be a nice idea to put it sticky in the place you mention.

JR -

I downloaded everything (finally), but I keep getting the same error that Acheron encountered above. I tried rebooting, etc, etc. Nothing seems to work.

The instructions on the Microsoft website for installing the VB runtime files were somewhat vague, and I am wondering if I installed them correctly.

Quote:

Before starting the download, create a download directory on your computer.

Click the link to begin downloading. When prompted by the download software, choose the option Save this program to disk and click OK. Then select the directory you created on your computer.

Run the file from the download directory. When prompted, select the same directory you created on your computer. You will be expanding the contents of the EXE into this directory.

Create a download directory WHERE? (Does it matter?) Should it be in the Windows folder? Program Files folder? or what?

After running the file, I was never prompted for anything. It just copied a few files into my System32 directory and then stopped. I rebooted, and I get the error that Acheron got above.

Also, I cannot read the installation error message and I have no way of copying the text to paste into a translator during the installation process.

Any help would be appreciated. Acheron, how did you get your's to work?

MikeG

Ok,

I went to the Microsoft link and downloaded and installed the VB files....I'm not sure if they installed correctly and I have no idea how to check.

I downloaded these :

http://www.uv.es/jrtorres/Setup_CNebulaX.zip

http://www.uv.es/jrtorres/CNebulaX_compl.html#Update_EXE

I tried to install the first, and that's when I get the error.

Do I need to download this (for it to install properly) ? :

http://www.uv.es/coque/Update_1-05-48.zip

Thanks...

Glassthrower,

For the installation of the VB6 runtime files, you can create any folder (no matter where), since it is for storing temporarily the setup files. I mena it is only for uncompressing the files within the ZIP. Then, go to that folder and run the "true" setup program (later, you can remove the temporary folder). It was just a little confussion you had, but you have likely solved already.

About the update, yes, install it, because it is a major update: ephemerids for comets, asteroids and full VSOP87 theory for planets. This long weekend I made more improvements. I have replaced the EXE file and the hadbook file in the same file I linked last friday. But install the update, naturally, after having complete the installation of the program (first VB6 files, then the standard installation, and then the update). Do not forget rebooting the PC: the errors most people have in the first run come from having forgotten to reboot the PC.

I have linked an HTML version of the handbook, that I hope can help to understand how the program runs. It is too complex to use it without having a look to the handbook.

SAVING CONFIGURATIONS - there are two ways of closing the program:

(1) Quick exit - does not save any change in the ini file. It is done from the close button in the upper right corner of the main map

(2) Close showing the save INI dialog - close the program from the close button within the toolbox (tabbed area)

I think that, to avoid confusions, I will change this feature.

I also downloaded the software, & got the error msg. Since I can't read what it says, don't know what the problem is. Finally gave up, & uninstalled it.
