Double Stars Database
      #5179951 - 04/19/12 10:00 AM

Hi Folks,

here is my own site, the Double Stars Database: an interface to the Washington Double Stars Catalog (WDS).

Double Stars Database

I wrote it from scratch because I never felt comfortable with the Aladdin interface and searching information from the WDS datafile.
My goals are easy to use, data accuracy and completeness.

I just completed the translation to English (I'm Italian), I need help if you like. Please report me if you find something wrong.

My suggestion is to register and login to use all the features like data filtering based on your telescope's capability.

Thank you for your time.

Gianluca Sordiglioni

Bravo Gianluca!

To me it doesn't save the instrument parameters under Setup/Preferences. I'm using the latest Firefox browser.
Don't know if it's a bug or a problem with my own configuration.

Andrea

That is an excellent tool, Gianluca. I just added a link to it here on a double star blog I write with Greg Stone.

Grazie!

Great job. Could not figure out the format of the input for "separation between" - how do you enter for example 1 to 25 arcseconds?

Thank you so much for your kindly comments.
If there will be enought interest I'll continue to develop new features. For example, inputting reports and measures is quite "basic". Images uploads. Visual simulation. And of course more debugging (I'm aware there is something on "PA now", "RA now" and graph to investingate when orbiting period is expressed in days).

@WRAK: you can't do it right now :-) I disabled this feature. My JavaScript solution was unstable/not compatible with all browsers. It's not my top priority, I'll not spend more time on this issue for a while.
Your question gives me the information you used the Advanced Search feature. Very good!

Fixed. Thank you Bruce.

A side effect of the Double Stars Database development is I'm forced to check my data, including the WDS. I send email regularly to Brian Mason and he always kindly reply me. Last time I submitted 1600+ magnitude errors on multiple systems.
I think he is aware of this site.

well, bad on them if they don't ask to have it supported via the .gov domain. after all, they control the data.

if what you're calling magnitude errors are discrepancies in the pairwise entries (e.g., AB gives A as 5.0, AC gives A as 5.3) then yes, there are many of those in WDS. unavoidable, since they are typically measures made by different observers, instruments and equipment at different epochs.

i have to do quite a lot of cleaning and cross checking when i prepare my spreadsheet version of WDS, which i do about once a year. i don't mind that, because cleaning is a form of editing (censoring, adjudicating, overwriting) and it's better to have the unedited data always at hand. however it creates unique challenges for a query tool.

thanks for the fix. the lists i examined (including my wm. herschel attributions) look great. i realize that you have a lot on your plate. but an FAQ that explains how to create custom lists would be very helpful.

i worked with SQL PERL query/browser programmers during my internet years and i know what is involved under the hood.

good on ya!

and also azure1961p:
If you issue a "diff" command from one WDS file to another taken in another date, you see so much differencies! At USNO they have a lot to work to do. I think they have no time nor resources left to maintain a search engine. All professional astronomers use Simbad/Aladin/VizieR and that's enought for them. But those tools are not intended for amateur astronomers, and not for double stars works: these are general-purpose search tools expecially good for cross-reference catalogs.
If they will ask me to support them, we will see. For now, it's me to be "beared" by them with my petulant error reports... :-)

yes, it's like what you're saying, but there's more.
A double A was discovered to be Aa: the magnitude reported was in a case the single A flux, in other cases the combined A+a flux, in random order.
In my software I already split in single components all the stars, so it was easy to check them all and compare each other. A week of work, during my Christmas' holidays.
And now errors are detected and corrected. :-)

Check the tool to create your own lists. It's enought powerful in your opinion?

I updated the database to the lastest WDS version.
Minor bugs where fixed. For example, one did not allowed to show the menus until you refreshed the page.

Minor issues still exists in data visualization, related to graphs. I'll fix them as soon as I can get some free time.

In the meantime, I wrote an article on "Double Star Bulletin" (Il Bollettino delle Stelle Doppie) issue #2, an Italian new online pubblication.
If you are interested to how many problems I encountered writing this software and how I solved them, an english version of the article is available, translated by me.

What Bruce said!

You've done a fantastic job with that site, Gianluca. I find myself reluctant to switch over to the WDS now unless I need to confirm some data or search for something not otherwise available.

Very, very much appreciated, believe me!

And the Bulletin of Double Stars looks very appealing as well -- I'm working my way through that now.

Thank you Bruce and John.
I advice you all there is a bug in the "advanced search" page: I tested searching for SAO, it seems to have no effect. Still investigating.
When checking the visual filter flag the algorithm did not filtered doubles with magnitudes out of resolution limit of the telescope. This was fixed but not yet in production.
I also discovered an unexpected format of the Orbit 6 catalog, confirmed by Dr Mason, USNO. Some data are duplicated for the same double because the are multiple solutions to the orbit. Difference is most cases minimal, it's matter of decimals, but I had to invent a solution to handle this. So it may happen multiple graphs are displayed, and "pa now" and "sep now" refers to the first graph.

Many thanks for a great site!

I'm getting a 403 error when I try to go to the registration page. Using Firefox 19.0.2 and IE9.

I've tried the registration links from these two pages:
http://stelledoppie.goaction.it/
http://stelledoppie.goaction.it/index2.php?section=1

Both return the 403

Hi Folks,

It's time to consider the stelledoppie.goaction.it website stable, so I passed it to version 1.0.

Here is a short list of updates and bug fixes.

[new] flamsteed shows number and constellation, not only the number, ie 30 boo vs 30.
[new] news ordered descendant by date
[fix] table fix in orbital elements
[fix] an .htaccess problem prevented new registrations and login/logouts
[new] implemented References and Authors in Notes, a new database file imported by the WDS website
[new] implemented "between" and "not between" to work in searches, using a comma to separate terms
[fix] in neirborhood graph coordinates were inverted left-right. I know there's more work to be done here.
[new] in advanced search, added date first and date last fields
[new] in advanced search, added notes flags field, the one in the main WDS file.
[new] the WDS import script was redesigned to minimize lost records (doubles that changed designation)
[new] constellation (cst) column in lists

I planned to implement a coord to clipboard feature but I realized it's a time-consuming task, so I solved modifying the coord_arcsec_2000 field layout leaving out the grade symbols to permit cut&paste without strange characters to be deal with.

In the next release you'll be able to merge, integrate and do many operations on you personal observation lists. Export to SkySafari too... if they will kindly import the entire WDS in their software!

I know there are many bugs to be fixed.

It's all for now.

Bye,
Gianluca

A new database update was performed. New measures from BolSD are still to be included, as I can see.

A bug was fixed that prevented to display the correct value for rho and theta in sep_now and pa_now when an orbital solution was found.

Here is version 1.1 of stelledoppie. WDS database updated to latest.
Thank you to Robert and Gianluca (not me!) for their bug reports.

[new] added Tycho-2 in simple Search box. BEWARE: this is experimental, I know some records are off.
[mod] left menu changed in Catalogs, added "Computed Lists" and "My Lists"
[new] "Doubles seen" list back online (requires login)
[new] Besselian and Julian dates calculated in measures and reports
[new] list export to SkySafari (!!!)
[fix] pa_now,sep_now calc fixed when Orbit6 was involved (7 Tau was 0.54" sep instead of 0.7")
[mod] Double star WDS data listed in 4 columns instead of 3 to improve reading
[fix] could not modify or delete reports and measures

There are many people using custom lists. I'll improve this area in next version. You'll be able to merge lists (union, intersect, difference) and import from different sources (yes, SkySafari too).

Gianluca

Well done and many thanks once again Gianluca!

How do I export a list to SkySafari? I can do an advanced search but I cannot find how to export that search to a list (I think I did this one but for the life of me cannot figure out how again) and then where to click to export the list out...

You can't export a selection. This function will be implemented in next version

You have to create a custom list in Setup->Lists :: New list

then enter in a double and add to the list using "Add to list" on the left.

Then return to Setup->List, click "Show" in My List, and "Export to SkySafari" appears on the left column under Actions.

I know, it's a weird procedure. I'm redesigning the entire list handler.

I worked hard in version 1.3 to implement a powerful lists management. I hope you'll enjoy it.

[mod] in advanced search, field boxes are of different sizes
[fix] a permission bug prevented a published report to be displayed to other users
[fix] fixed doubles seen in this section
[new] in Setup->Lists, now lists can be merged to create complex unions
[new] computed lists and searches can now be salved as a list
[fix] it was not possible to modify a report, and some fields could not be saved
[fix] in neirbourhood tab, a mouseover a red dot star shows again a comment
[mod] remarks field added to lists; description was renamed in title
[fix] fixed bad Orbit6 import, some values where truncated
[new] export to SkySafari for searches, user lists and computed lists (as requested by Roberto)
