Welcome to the General Observing Forum
      #1733828 - 07/23/07 11:22 AM

Let me be the first (Moderator) to welcome you to the "General Observing Forum! You asked for it (so did we) and here it is!

As it says in the forum description:
Quote:

General Observing: A forum for observing experiences involving satellites, meteor showers, aurora, atmospheric phenomena and other observations that do not neatly fit into existing observing fora. Also encouraged are: discussions of meteorology, home weather stations, and the effect of weather on amateur astronomy.

If you observe something that just doesn't fit elsewhere, or like observing things that aren't covered elsewhere (say, you're one of those people who just loves 'noctilucent clouds' this is the place.

I like to say this is the forum for things <300 miles above the surface that you can see with the UNAIDED EYE, no instruments, just the old MkI Eyeball.

If you post in this forum and the moderators think it fits better in one of the more specific forums, we'll relocate the post (and leave a pointer). Please don't be offended if we do this, it's our jobs.

So keep it fun, keep it nice, and post what you see (or don't see if it's more appropriate).

And once again, WELCOME!

Hi Folks!

I'm excited about this new forum. Although the focus is not entirely on weather and atmospheric phenomena, I'll likely contribute in those areas.

Randy and Tom, should we sticky a thread with some links relevant to the subjects at hand? I have a heap of weather and atmosphere links that are quite handy when it comes to predicting observing conditions.

And we have an undercover weather expert here on CN. I won't call him out by name, to avoid embarassing him. But he is largely responsible for lighting the meteorology fire in me. I hope we see him in here soon.

Clear dark skies,

I moved house 2 years ago to get a perfect view of the northern sky to observe and photograph noctilucent clouds. As a bonus I discoved I was also perfectly placed to observe green flashes from May to August. I'm a complete fan of sun pillars, parhelia, CZAs etc so I'm thrilled that this forum has been started up!

Wow. I leave town for a few days, and a new forum pops up on Cloudy Nights

Thanks to Randy, Glassthrower, et. al., for creating a General Observing forum. You don't really appreciate the Deep-Sky Objects without an understanding of the Near-Sky Objects. Growing up in NE Ohio, it's a frustrating experience at times, but a quest to understand atmospheric phenomena really pays off over time. I'll be checking in (and chiming in) here often, to be sure.

Clear Skies,
Phil

Don't thank us, we just offered to moderate (ok and begged just a little bit )

The Admins in their wisdom saw that there was demand and opportunity and wisely chose to allow a new forum.

Great new forum RandyR - but I hope that doesn't preclude photos of sky phenomena like rainbows, solar halos and noctilucent cloud etc where a picture is worth a 1000 words

Photos are indeed worth thousand words. It's an observation forum just like the others, and photos of the observations are most certainly allowed. That was one of the basis for creating this forum to begin with. It was a great suggestion, Maurice (and Stargazer) for the Atmospheric Phenomena/weather forum.

Just a thought--would a better forum title be "Near Sky Observing"?

Might be, but we kicked the title and description around for a while. Probably going to stick with GenObs.

When I was in school, they used to call me a day-dreamer for staring out into space during algebra.
And I still watch the dawn out my big window every morning at work, and keep close watch on clouds and weather.
Now we have a forum for it!

I'm sure this will become one of my "regular stops," especially the weather-related threads. Super idea. Thanks for starting it up!
