I hate my climate, I really, really do.
      #5182367 - 04/20/12 08:39 PM

Sometimes (most of the time actually), I wish I lived in the middle of the desert. I cannot believe this run of bad luck I'm getting.

it all started last weekend, with a forecast of sunshine and warmth pretty much all week. Sounds good, you would think, right? WRONG.

That Saturday was nice and clear, good seeing predicted, no cloud in the forecast. I was eager for fist light on my new scope so, I make up an observing list and wait for nightfall. Well, what happens... as I set up everything, I can see some sort of fog/mist developing, turns out that there are burnoffs in the area I decide to wai it out, and eventually the muck clears. Ofcourse, seeing was an absolute dog and then high cloud moves in killing all chance of observing. Worst first light on record.

The next day dawns brilliant and sunny, but right on sunset, high cloud once again moves in, just like clockwork.

The following day ended up socked in with ugly maritime clag, so that night was screwed up by LOW cloud this time. I just happened to be under about 5% of the state that was actually socked in. The rest of the week is plagued by disgusting seeing and was never truly clear as promised

Then, last night, cloud cleared off by sunset, but by 10pm it was full overcast and fog. Today is forecast to have a sunny afternoon, but now there is more cloud and rain already moving in, should be well and truly here by nightfall.

So, that is the result of a week of "sunshine" as per the forecast. What a crock

Predictably, the next week or two has showers and freezing cold forecast everyday, so there goes any chance of observing for the foreseeable future.

Yes, but we live for the clear, cool nights of good seeing. Its heaven on earth.

Don't feel too badly. We've just come out of the worst winter I've experienced since I got into this hobby. And the winter is the best time for those of us from the Gulf south. In a few short weeks, we'll be in the grips of the heat and haze of summer. Steady skies that are great for viewing the Moon and planets, but it's not as much fun when sweat is dripping and 'skeeters are buzzing.

David

As far as the south (US), I'm visiting here in So Ga and my hayfever is to such an extent that any interest in observing at night is lost by the amount of meds I'll need to take to suffer through my symptoms during the day. It's clear out tonight and I'm going to forgo observing and take an Allegra soon *sneezes*

Come on down to Arizona, where the sky is not cloudy all night. Just don't expect to find a job here. Still in depression. And the pay will be even lower if things ever improve.

Here in the southeast, I always prepare for epic battles with dew. I was spoiled by a trip to the southwest last year and now I am actually planning a move.

Same here, David. Ordinarily; winter is my best viewing, crystal clear very dark skies. This last winter however, was overcast constantly. Very disappointing for sure; but it just makes us appreciate it, all the more; when we do get favorable viewing times!

We too had a strange winter. Mild temperatures (for us), many "clear" nights with "thick," frosty air or high, thin clouds. I'll take real cold and clear to this...

It's supposed to be good tonight, finally.

Dark skies.

...living in a desert means you don't get rain. Unfortunately that doesn't mean you don't get clouds (spoken from experience ). I also can't believe how cloudy it has been this winter/spring. I guess you have to look at it as an opportunity to plan observing sessions and get to those telescope projects you've been meaning to. Look at it this way, it can only get better, right? Right? Better luck in the future.

And living in a desert VERY often means you get to observe the jet stream boiling by the planet. I didn't know it was windy out here until it stopped one day and I fell over!

Where we live, the trees grow at about a 20 degree angle off perpendicular, pointing east. I never observe to the west.

And we get those "teaser" wispy clouds that never dump any rain, but politely obscure anything we'd like to see.

But on the good nights...it's all worth it. Last night was so nice, even a rattlesnake put down a mouse it was trying to swallow asked if it could take a look through the eyepiece.

Chris - same here a ways South of you... well maybe we had two... maybe 3? Many good starts in evening that clouded over quickly - made me put the ep back in scopes and just go visual for the glimpses. Often realizing high overcast forming on what looked clear compared to the opaque greydome... the mind plays tricks...

Same problem where I live. Been trying to get a night with just one star shining so I can finish collimation. Forecast for the next week looks no better either.

Welcome to the joys of living on the Gulf Coast of the U.S., clouds materialize right above you here frequently. I know what you mean, there are times where I too wish I am living in the middle of a high desert.

I often question why I started in Astronomy especially during long runs of bad weather. It seems as we have had more than our share this year and on the few good nights we've had, wouldn't you know I have to work or some other obligation prevents me from going out. I ponder the dollar amount invested per viewing hour !!
When we do get those good or even great nights when I can take part the answer is obvious. Priceless

It seems that here the weather authorities do not recognise high cloud, I've seen a "clear" forecast more often than not when you can barely see a star through the haze. What really annoys me is how it all turned out relative to the "sunny" forecasts all week. Didn't get a single night in.

It's been a month since I picked up my 12" and still no first light

Tonight could be looking promising, atleast according to Skippysky and the satpic loops, but forecast suggests showers and storms. Ofcourse, if this week has been any indication, it'll happen...

ah yes, I know all about the work thing. I head off to work, enthusiasticly looking forward to clocking off in the evening and getting the scope out, but in reality, by the time I get to the end of the shift, the thought of lugging all my equipment out after a long day consigns me to the couch infront of the TV with a 6 pack

Lol I too sometimes wonder why I bother to spend thousands on a scope when there are so many variables against us.. yes I agree, those few excellent nights are worth it

Well, I copped a pretty intense thunderstorm this afternoon, which completes the set for the last 7 days - high cloud, low cloud, smoke, fog, wind..... lol the only thing missing is snow!

One day, one day first light will come....
