It's safer than breathing Thermacell chemicals!

The "Thermacell chemicals" are pyrethroids.

And I have to think that it's safer than getting West Nile.

Thermacell for sure. But they are rendered mostly ineffective on slightly breezy nights - bugs are not as bad on breezy nights either. I usually have 2 of them going, one hanging off the front of my rocker box, and one on the eyepiece table. Haven't applied bug chemicals on my skin since I got them.

I know the Thermacell is the 'holy grail' around here but it just doesn't do it for me. I've been using the Off! Clip-On with good results, that and a little deet around my socks and ears and I'm good for the night.

Seriously, good for you, Jon! It must make for very pleasant observing sessions.

I plead guilty, I just couldn't help myself...

There are mosquitoes here but they are few and far between, we're talking no precautions and maybe one or two bites a season...

Jon

Jon should try my back yard in La Mesa if he feels deprived! Got enough homes with badly kept pools and such around that I usually have to use an Off Power pad lantern as well as the clip on or some other repellant to avoid a feeding frenzy.

I used Thermacell for the first time recently and again at the Cherry Springs Star Party. The bugs at CSSP weren't as bad as they have been in the past, I heard, but I still escaped with only 2-3 bites the whole weekend. Those I attribute to the early evening hours before I turned the device on. The thing to remember is that it takes a while before it is entirely effective, maybe thirty minutes. So while you're waiting for your telescope to cool down, turn it on. Or better yet, turn it on before sundown.

We haven't had the mosquito problem this year due to no rain=no standing water, but it finally did rain over two inches last week and now the little buggers are out in force. I've ordered a thermacell, but won't be hear for a week or so and in the meantime, I tried the fan solution for my backyard and it seemed to work pretty well. Only one bite and it was on the down wind side. Guess another fan is the solution for that. I hope the thermacell works as well when I don't have power!

Cheers and Clear Skies!

Larry

Stagnant or abandoned swimming pools fall under public nuisance laws in many localities... if a friendly, perhaps anonymous, note to one's neighbor doesn't clear things up, a letter, listing specifics, sent to the local health department or mosquito control commission should generate some degree of action.

Dave:

Thanks for your kind offer but at this time I more than happy to avoid the pests. I just got back from a 5 week trip car camping across the west and midwest and got bitten up badly by something a couple of times.

The other good thing about the fan in the summer is that it cools you off as well:)

Thanks everyone for your imput! I too have a Thermacell that I used couple of times last year with success but I was worried about my optics. Never had a chance to used both but I will give them a try at my primary observing area which is surround by a shallow lake. Mosquito heaven!!!

I use Cutter brand repellent containing aloe ;it does seem to feel better on the skin and is pretty effective.

Evidently I am one of those "lucky" to be attractive to insects;both chiggers and mosquitos ,not to mention the occasional bee or wasp!
