To the question: how do you make naughty astronomy talk.

My Love,
let us bask in the light of ancient suns.
Our love,
is like the universe, growing, expanding and illuminating.
Lo, the time before,
we met was an emptiness like the vacuum of space.
We met,
our love blossomed like ancient novas.
Our souls,
swirl around each other as of ageless nebula - streaming and caressing.
Our hearts,
beat with the pulsing of the stars.
Our love now shines
with the light of new stars - bright and intense.
Our minds,
but with one thought - to love each other.
Together,
we warm and hold each other, like merging galaxies.
Our love,
endless, ageless and as timeless as the universe.

Regards

How do you keep the eyepiece steady?

Ive been into astronomy for all (and more) of the 45 years I've been married. In all that time I think my wife has looked through one of my scope less than a hand full of times. However. she does understand that it is my passion. The subject of money spent only came up once and its then I asked her if she knew how much a bass boat or a Harley cost.

Marriage is 'give and take' so when she wants to go garage saling or antiquing I smile and go along.

My wife spends most the day doing crafty things - scrapbooking, making embroidred thingys, knitted novalties (people can't seem get enough apple cozys and banana cozys and knitted stuffed animals and monsters), hand made cards and special fancy things for cards etc. I let at it, she even sells some of her craft products online.

I guess this makes me craft-widower ...

I've never understood these kind of responses. When a man states he is happily married, why do so many people joke or assume that he is being "watched" and goaded to speak positively about his relationship?

Some, if not many, of us truly are happy in our marriages. If you are not, perhaps YOU are the problem and not the other person! For anyone who chooses their scope over their partner, you should not be and do not DESERVE to be married! You should have remained single rather than entering into and subsequently giving the institution of marriage a bad reputation.

It took me two tries to get marriage right. I am not only happy, but blessed by Jeannie being in my life--32 years.

What some call the "Ball and Chain", I call my balloon because she lifts me up and supports me in more ways than one.
After 20yrs of marriage this past month she still brings a smile to my face when I see Her. It does'nt hurt that when she was bartending and she would get home at 2am and if it had cleared off she would wake me and ask if I wanted to observe even though she has very little intrest in it Herself!

As the wife, I have been blessed with a wonderful husband who shares some of the same hobbies as me. And we have had quite a few over the years (model railroading, wood working etc). When I wanted to get back into astronomy, he was all aboard. We always go out together and have a blast. I do the hunt and he does his "wow!" when he takes a look in the EP. Then we just sit back and talk about how spectacular our universe is.

Yep, he's a keeper.

You also are a keeper! Marriage can be fulfilling for both parties. It is too bad that half or more don't work out, for whatever reason(s).

I am fortunate that my wife likes to do public outreach astronomy and multi night star party camping with me. The first time I took her to the GSSP I showed her how to use the Sky Commander on our club's 20 inch Obsession. She took a pad a paper and pen and started with M1 and tried to observe every object above the horizon and take notes about what she really liked. The second night she was giving tours to others. She really loves public astronomy and showing children the wonders in the sky.

I am also really fortunate that she loves to go on multi week backpacking trips. Last year we did all of the John Muir Trail over 18 days. We have been backpacking together with our children (now grown) since 1993. We do a lot of naked eye observing on those backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada. Those wonderfully dark skies really put the seeds of astronomy into both of us.

We have been married for 32 years and respect and appreciation of each others interests has kept our relationship strong.

As a single person I totally agree! Well said. There are far too many snippy and unpleasant comments about spouses and 'significant others' bandied around these days. It makes me wonder why these people remain married if it is *really* that bad. Unless they are trying to be 'funny'.

My wife will only take a quick peek at a single object now and then and admit that's kinda neat, mostly to be polite. Oh the other hand, she's happy I'm only a few steps away outside on the deck and not off chasing other women, drinking or gambling.

More seriously, she spends time and money on her crafts, and I don't object. I once commented that it's too bad I'm not into astrophotography and don't have anything to show for time spent on my hobby. She pointed out that I do. I show her a smiling face for a month after every new galaxy I find.

My wife is very supportive of my astronomy habits. She was disappointed the first time she looked through a scope because the magazines and internet gave her false expectations for what she would see through the lens. She seems to have gotten over that and definitely loves to come out sometimes and look through the scope with me.

I am lucky! new [Re: Ian Robinson]
      #5314110 - 07/12/12 11:16 AM

And I try to remember that.

We (by accident) had booked camping at the Grand Canyon during the solar eclipse. We found out days before and my wife rushed around looking for proper equipment to view it. We got 3 #14 welder's glasses and found a local telescope shop that sold solar film for my camera. We hiked to the rim of the canyon and had a great view of the event.

That got me back into astronomy. My wife is hooked too. We already had a 4.5" reflector we bought about 10 years ago which gave a decent view of Saturn and Jupiter.

After viewing the Venus transit with the 4.5" scope with the solar film over it and taking lots of pictures again we decided to get a better telescope.

We went to a local telescope shop and bought a Meade LT 8" and the Orion 7-22mm zoom eyepiece. Now my wife worries that we may have bought too small a telescope. We will take it camping with us about 20x/year so the size and weight is definitely handy for that. But we may save up and with the LX600's come out buy a 12" or a 14" and keep the LT 8" for the general camping scope.

Also, on the way up to the canyon we had stopped at Lowell Observatory and they had a solar telescope out at noon for viewing the Sun. My wife got totally hooked! Now we also own a SolarMax II 60mm (which I just got set up last night). And of course it's cloudy today! We'll probably get the 2nd etalon in a month or two when the credit card cools down

My son is still only 5, and liked seeing the moon and Saturn, but doesn't have enough patience just yet.... but astronomy should be a family event before too long.

My first picture of the moon is already on the wall

And here are the eclipse photos (Olympus E-PM1 and 45-200 lens (90-400mm equivalent) :

And the transit photos:

I am lucky... and I know it!
