It was a bit past the peak of the anti-twilight arch at the time.

Funny, but when I lived in PA I never saw one Belt of Venus. But I wouldn't have known what one was until I got a copy of the Backyard Astronomer's Guide. Now that I've moved to UT, I see one every night, and it's about 40 miles away.

I've seen the Belt of Venus and the shadow of the Earth many times over the years. Knowing about such phenomena really improves one's chances of actually seeing them.

I only became aware of the Belt of Venus a few years ago, when I edited a column by Fred Schaaf on the subject. I realized in retrospect that it's visible every clear morning all the way across the sky from the apartment where I grew up in New York City. Now that I know what to look for, I see it all the time.

It does, however, require having a clear view of the horizon -- something that's hard to find it the tree-infested eastern U.S.

Here's a photo of the Belt of Venus and the Earth's shadow that I took on October 16th from the top of the observation tower at the summit of Spruce Knob, the highest mountain in West Virginia. As with the more recent shots, I used a Canon PowerShot SD980 IS digital camera set on auto.

Seeing the Belt of Venus and the Earth's shadow rise and race across the sky is one of my favorite pastimes while waiting for the sky to get dark before a nights viewing at our club field. Thanks for the great photo's Dave.
