My Visit to the Griffith Observatory
      #5551437 - 12/03/12 02:51 AM Attachment (55 downloads)

Here are some of the photographs that I took during my two visits to the Griffith Observatory in October. It was partly-to-mostly cloudy the first evening due to a persistent low pressure region that sat off the coast. A rather chromatically-aberrated Vega was the only celestial object that I saw through a telescope. The skies were clear during the second visit and three 11-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrains were set up outside of the observatory complex. In addition to Uranus (through the observatory's primary instrument), I had a peek at Albireo, NGC 457 (the Owl Cluster), and the Double Cluster through the SCTs.

I wasn't using a flash. The Griffith Observatory is a public facility. The observatory lies right in the middle of a white zone. The NELM is less than fifth magnitude. No research is currently being conducted there.

The Pacific Time clock was correct. The Universal Time clock was not. The time difference should have been plus 8 hours.

The door to the dome is closed promptly at 9:30 p.m. Anyone still in line outside of the dome is out of luck at that point.

So what brought you to Los Angeles? And did you manage a trip to Mt. Wilson?

My wife wanted to visit her sons (in Los Angeles and San Diego). We toured Mt. Wilson on the previous Friday and Palomar Mountain on the following Tuesday.

The new planetarium projector is a state-of-the-art digital projector. The show in the planetarium requires obtaining a separate ticket to see the show (from the entry ticket), but it is worth it. I have seen planetarium shows in the new Hayden (NY), and the Adler (Chicago) and a few other places, but currently, IMO, none equals the impressive projector in LA's Griffith Observatory Planetarium.
If you go, make sure you see the planetarium show. It's far more impressive than the view of Jupiter through the 12" refractor.
This site doesn't have good seeing. The observatory was located where it was to be accessible to Los Angelenos, and it is.

Cool pictures Dave! I've always wanted to go there, but alas, it is the one 'famous' CA observatory that I've missed.

The original concepts and drawings for this place were done by Russell Porter (of Stellafane fame), while taking a break from his work at Palomar.
