What did you Get for the Hobby from the Holidays?
      #5587771 - 12/24/12 09:29 PM

Okay, a day early if your a Christmas Day opener but some are Christmas Eve Openers. So the question is what did you get this year to help you in the hobby? This can be from equipment, to eyepieces, to Atlases, to software, to lots of things? I thought the General Observing and Astronomy would be the best place for this.

What did I get? Well I got a ES AR102 f/6.5 refractor; a 2 inch OIII filter and some clothing for winter observing (new gloves, new hat and a few other items of clothing). The wife came out better than me with a trip for both of us to northern California coast next June after tax season.

The Complete Guide To The Herschel Objects by Mark Bratton.

Love it! Outstanding book. Already read the whole text up to the individual observations.

It will be a big help as I go for the rest of the Herschel 2500. I've nailed 1119 of them so far.

Expect a more formal review in the near future.

Nothing astronomically related this Christmas.
However, last Christmas (2011) I got the Sue French "Deep Sky Wonders" book as a gift. Other than books (that I suggest when someone asks me "what do you want for Christmas), the people within my gift-exchanging set aren't knowledgeable or well-situated to select appropriately useful astro gear.

I used zip ties for mounting the telrad. This way you can move it if need be. It's held on my fob for over a year.

After being out of astronomy from a physical aspect for about 10 years I was finally able to make this purchase for Christmas.

Bosma Beta RE 4" f/9.8 refractor

Years ago, my wife accidentally knocked over the OTA from my Meade 826C and I left my stand outside too many nights in the elements and it turned to junk. The focus assembly and finder scope mount holes were all cracked/chipped after the OTA fell over. I was able to repair the OTA using of all things a plastic bucket cut and sandwiched to patch the cracked tube on either side of the focus assembly and finder scope screw holes. It actually worked very well.

I dusted of my old Meade this weekend and performed a thorough cleaning on everything including the optics. Performed a rough culmination and then modified the Vixen/Polaris mount from the Bosma Beta RE 4" f/9.8 refractor I had just purchased to accommodate the Meade 826C reflector. The weight of the Meade is too much to use in in the Equatorial without adding more counter weights but it works fine in the altazimuth mode with a slight modification of adding a steel band strap to the mount which keeps it from flipping to the equatorial mode due to the weight.

All and all I am very happy with how it turned out and now have a choice of using an optically sound 4" refractor or an 8" reflector.

Next up is that in a couple of years I will be getting a pension which will allow me to purchase either the Meade 14" LX600 or LX800.

Well my wife surprised me with a new toy to use, a DSLR camera. I love photography and she figures we can take rides and hikes and I can take pictures while we are doing these things and it isn't based on clear skies or clouds. This is a good thing since I have only had 2 set up trials uses with my new scope in the backyard and only 1 dark site use of the scope since October. Today I used my snow blower to move another 6 inches that fell just today from those clouds above. My daughter got the same gift so we can share in our passion of photography together.

I think you went beyond thinking about it, Sean! Kinda miss my old 9T1.

Not exactly an astronomy tool, but cool nonetheless. I received a 150 gram meteorite from the 1947 Sikhote Alin meteorite fall in Russia. It's pretty neat to hold an actual piece of outer space in your hand!

ES 11mm and 18mm 82 degree eyepieces, Orion deluxe accessory tray, and Nikon 10x50 binoculars. Also got the small chunk of meteorite from ES. Very nice touch for their customers.

And....lot of clouds too.

Folks, I got a modest group of gifts; "Star Testing" by Suiter, more cerium oxide for a mirror blank I'm figuring and a green laser pointer.
Peace, Bill

Rain and clouds most of the time, and a near-full moon the other few bits.

I'm at a point where I need more clear, dark, moonless night opportunties than I do more equipment.

Just down the road from me is a guy that does a lot of corporate entertaining for his business.
At the start of the New year he lets me have his left-over Fortnum & Mason wooden wine presentation boxes.
Can you believe that he use to chuck these away. They are well made, and make great storage boxes.
Best of all, I get them free.

Very nice indeed. I'm glad you're using them - shame for those to be trashed.

Happy New Year!

William Optics binoviewer kit will be here tomorrow. Plus we've had LOTS of clouds and rain here lately. Hopefully the skies will clear soon. Also have $130 here to be spent on something....perhaps I'll save it and get my Canon T3 modified soon.

The Celestron Sky Scout, which is better than the 6,000 objects (thx to its Hipparchus Catalog, SAO, etc.) that I originally thought as per the old brochure/manual lit that came with it. The website claims 50,000. But coolest of all is the aim and shoot which brings up a dozen objects every time.

Oh -- I almost forgot to mention one "little" item that appeared in my stocking (yes, I still get a stocking. Santa must really love me). It was an Energizer Trailfinder 5-LED headband light:

Energizer Trailfinder

It has one central one-watt LED that fills the room with more light than my Coleman 8-D-cell flourescent lantern (and claims to have an 11-hour runtime on only three AAA batteries); a second, lower-output mode for that LED; two other LEDs that will run for 35 hours (and still fill the room rather well), and then -- the piece de resistance -- a pair of red LEDs that will run for a claimed 50 hours on those 3 AAAs. It's all on an adjustable headband and can be angled up and down in click-stops, and it's so light you hardly know you're wearing it. My family knows very little about astronomy, but somebody's been paying attention! This little sucker is PERFECT! (They claim it's waterproof too, though I don't plan to test that claim.)

Didn't have anything on Santa's list. Pretty well have what I need so I'm good to go. Time and clear sky's would be nice but don't have a need for any more "things."

Nice sound track, but Johann Strauss would have been more appropriate.

If I wanted to learn how to build a rig like that where would I start?

I gave myself an early Christmas present of a 6mm Tele Vue Delos.

As a joke, my wife gave me something that should come in handy as an observing "aid", two pounds of Death Wish Coffee.
