FYI...just looked at my Jupiter App and there's some good stuff going on tonight. These are EST
Io Transits at 7pm
Ganymede Transits at 9pm
Red spot Transits at 7pm

Sounds great! Sadly, I'll miss it - it's been cloudy here all day with a chance of rain through the weekend. My kid's elementary school had a star party scheduled for Friday, but it was cancelled.

Why do I get
Io Transits at 6pm
Ganymede Transits at 9pm
Red spot disappears behind planet at 6:30pm
on my older version of Starry Night Pro 3.1? Usually its on the money.

I'm using the App I bought from S&T for $3.00
Say's Io begins transit at 18:07 = 6pm and the shadow starts at 19:15= 7pm
Ganymede starts at 21:08 = 9pm
Red spot transits 19:20 = 7pm
At least that's the way I interpret it?

Yes, that agrees with what I just posted within 1 minute for the Moon events and 2 minutes for the GRS. Moon transits are slow events; it takes a while for something as big as Io to slide in front of Jupiter. And the GRS is even vaguer. So for all practical purposes, the agreement is perfect.
However, when you're standing out in the cold, 15 minutes is a long time. So I wouldn't round 7:15 down to 7 pm.

Very cool -- thanks for the tip. I'm in taking a break, but I'll go out again from 9 to 9:30 to watch Ganymede start its transit and Io's shadow finish its transit.
The seeing is pretty abysmal, as one would expect during a cold spell (currently 18F, heading down to zero). And the wind periodically shakes the scope too much to see. Nonetheless, fine views of the GRS and Io's shadow popped out several times for several seconds at a stretch.
I also wasn't expecting Callisto so near Jupiter, passing right by the disk on the north side.

I watched Io begin its transit shortly after 6:00 p.m. EST this evening through a 6" f/8 Orion SkyQuest XT6 Dob and an 8-24mm Vixen zoom eyepiece.
At 7:15 p.m., I witnessed a -7.4 magnitude flare from Iridium 58.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., the GRS was to the west of the CM and Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto to the east of Jupiter's disk. Callisto was far to the north of the disk. It formed a somewhat unusual triangle with Ganymede, which was also close to the planet, and Europa, which was far to the east. Europa was approximately co-linear with Io's shadow, which lay just south of the SEB. I used a magnification of 150x.
I also looked at M42, NGC 1981, Sigma Orionis and Struve 761, and the Moon. Aristarchus, Vallis Schröteri, Kepler, Wargentin, and other craters were easily seen. The Tycho and Copernicus ray systems were quite prominent, as was the mysterious Reiner Gamma.

I upped the magnification to 200x (6mm Tele Vue Delos). Io's transit is over and Io, Ganymede, and Callisto are "surrounding" Jupiter in a very unusual configuration. Io's shadow transit is still underway.

I can no longer see Io's shadow, although the transit is not quite finished. Ganymede has made its ingress. The seeing is surprisingly good tonight and the views through the humble little 6" Newtonian at 200x are really excellent.

Ganymede has cleared Jupiter's disk. Io now appears to be farther from Jupiter than Callisto does, whereas the opposite was true when Io's shadow transit ended. The seeing remains very good and I even can see a bit of color in the NEB at 200x.
The temperature is currently 15 degrees Fahrenheit and the "real feel" temperature is 7 degrees.

I have a very handy free app called QuickSky that shows the positions of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, along with some other useful information on the planets.
