Do you go observing by yourself to ur fav place?
      #5683725 - 02/16/13 03:23 PM

As I'm new to this hobby, not all of my friends are fascinated with what I have been doing on my spare time. But as they do get curious and they have been coming along with me wherever I go observe. I always had this in my head, "God, it'd be nice to be alone and enjoy the quiet night as I relax". At the same time I enjoy the company, and they keep me occupied, but people keep me occupied 24/7, so... +since they aren't into it as much as I am, they are not patient. I sound like Grumpy. Lol. Even by myself I worry that mountain lions or crazy person will jump out of the bushes and abduct me.

Do you guys go observing by yourself when you go to one of your favorite location where you are alone?? Aren't you scared a bit like a little kid?

This is silly

I observe alone far more than I observe with other people. I have three different dark sites that I go to and at two of them I feel safer than I do in my backyard. However the darkest of my three sites is a bit spooky when I'm alone. It's also the one I go to the least for that very reason. It has a fair open area to observe but it is surrounded by woods and anything coming out of the woods at a high rate of speed would probably be on me before I could do anything. And because of the woods there are always lots of strange animal sounds that are very close. But hey, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

Not silly at all. I observe at home by myself. If some of the club members are going to the dark site, I might go. I like the idea of having other people around at that site, if for no other reason to have someone else around when I see something new and exciting.

So far I've only viewed from my back yard. Sometimes my daughter likes to sneak out and scare me. She thinks it is so funny. One day I'll probably have a heart attack. There's nothing like being totally engulfed on a new found galaxy or something and something touches you.

I think a good rule of thumb about remote observing sites is that, absent a secure club dark site where you can observe with other astronomers who are a deeply into it as you are (a good option of you have a local club), choose a site where you would also be comfortable hiking or picnicking alone as well. Which means if the methheads or other undesirables frequent the area, you should probably not for any activity.

As for critters, there have been many posts here about alleged dangers from nature, and unless you are in grizzly country, the biggest hazard is probably mosquitoes. Don't sweat the creatures, who are just as anxious to avoid you as you are them.

This is a very general question. What exactly are you worried about? If you can be more specific, I think folks here will offer specific suggestions.

Dark skies.

I like the knowledge that comes with more experienced people. Sometimes you get someone that talks a little more than I'd like. And I know everyone is proud of their scopes and the views, but I typically have one of the larger scopes at our dark sites at 11", so I sometimes find myself more annoyed when the guy with the 5 inch insists I come look at the Orion nebula or Andromeda. I do it, but deep down I find myself thinking about how rare it is go have a clear night on a dark weekend and I don't really want to spend it looking at the easier objects in the sky...through a 5" scope.

When I'm alone at the dark site I find myself wishing someone else would show up. When someone finally does, I think to myself, no no no, not him again. I'm probably just a terrible person.

This coming from a guy with a rattlesnake for an avatar...
Honestly, those would be MY first concern... and ARE! I try to make reasonable quantities of noise when moving around at a remote dark site, if/when away from the scope. I'm sure the rattlers stay away from where we are, but when "nature calls"....

This remote site i never observe alone at. I'd be totally safe from druggies, weirdo's, & party hounds- but a drive to the nearest medical facility is 45 minutes. Not something i'd wanna undertake, solo, while snake-bit!

Aside from those, wild pigs can be an issue in our region, and they aren't particularly afraid of much of anything. Those i'd like to avoid, as they can be horribly dangerous. Thankfully, we've never seen nor heard signs of them at our site.

A nearby state park is a decent dark-site, but is right off a main highway... possibly prone to late-nite travelers... tho the few times i've been there i've seen NO one. Not even the ranger that supposedly patrols there. Some of those trips i've brought my dog, but honestly, it's not a lot of fun for him.

I don't get a lot of yard visitors, or interested friends... my complaint might run a little opposite of yours? But when scheduling events with others, non-astro types, i generally shoot for the Moon. Seriously. Right around first quarter is perfect, as earlier in the eve they get wow'd by its views, then as it gets lower the sky darkens to where deepsky views are pretty good. Then, when it gets late enough, everyone bails to go home... and the Moon has set, leaving me gorgeous dark (well, such as they are from the edge of a small town) skies to go huntin' faint fuzzies only *i* am likely to appreciate!

For Moonless nites, i *try* to reserve my efforts for myself- and those who are more similarly invested... all things bein' equal.

Still, happy are YOU that so many wish to "observe" with you. I suspect this is a VERY odd "problem" to have among we enthusiasts.

When I'm at my observing site about half the time I'm the only one there. I like places with good visibility so I can see approaching cars ahead of time. I admit it does get a little spooky when I'm surrounded by the sound of howling coyotes, but I've never actually had any problems.

I like to observe alone and with others. I don't mind going to my dark sky spot alone at all. Very safe and minimal scary wildlife, skunks are the only thing I worry about, and that's not exactly life threatening, just annoying.

You should definitely try some observing by yourself if you are tiring of having your friends alone. It can be very relaxing and I find the only way to get any serious observing done(unless of course they other observer's are keeping to themselves). It's nice to share, but sometimes solo is just plain better. I have fun with both.

Our local astronomy club is mostly doing outreach. I don't have a lot of time for my favorite hobby, so most of the time I view alone. I don't want to spend what few evenings I have with six people lined up to look through my telescope. However, I do like viewing with like minded people. However, my schedule most often won't match up with others.

Hey that's my pet snake George . . . be nice!

Actually, herpetology is a second hobby. Have kept rattlers and copperheads in the past, but just a rat and corn snake now, though I keep my snake hook and tongs in the car all the time. Never seen a reptile once at the club dark site which is well within diamondback country. Your chances of encountering one are really pretty slim, and even then just walk around and he'll go his way. They really don't want to waste venom, which is their food catching tool, on something way too big to eat.

We do have cattle in the pasture right adjacent to the club site and they will come over to say hi when people are on-site. Coyotes and jackrabbits too, and see many possum and raccoons on the road in and out after dark. I kind of enjoy hearing the coyotes tip at sundown. It means the stars are about to come out!

I love star part mingling. I love meeting similar minded folks and I always leave knowing more than when I arrived. I miss star parties. The said I hate being bothered by passerbys. Lol I truly hate answering 20 stupid questions to people who have no interest in the pursuit but enjoy balking. Behind my condo there's one neighbor - she's a sweet heart. And genuinely loves it when I show her whatever, but the others..... Please leave me the h e l l alone.

There I said it.

I don't think its odd or wrong that you find the idea of he solitary pursuit engaging. It's relaxing, restorative and refreshing and time well spent on a deep level. And trying not to sound too spacey, there is on the other hand something not at all ALONE about scanning the star clouds and galaxies and such. But it's difficult to feel that when your peace is disrupted with the mechanics if being entertaining, cordial and educational.

I think you can have both but at seperate times. For the 95% of it or more its a solitary pursuit - I wish it were more so - cept for star party commeraderie - that is actually the perfect compliment to those solitary nights.

Pete

I like to practice the buddy system.....for the most part a solitary person might look pretty doable to a pack of wild dogs or coyotes. Two or more not so much.
Secondly and my area more importantly two of our best local viewing sites are teenage hangouts, partying disturbing others who " arent welcome" only happened to me once, but there have been other reports, one or two turned violent.

Lastly ,no Im not afraid of or in the dark, I grew up in the country in era when light pollution was non existant, Im used to the dark.

I am usually with a friend or two but I am more than willing to go alone if I have to. I am not afraid of coyotes or others, a good bear spray will distract them if needed. Last I have had encounters with people driving up where I am with others and watching for a few minutes and then driving away. I've never had that alone and that might change my opinion. In the end I prefer to observe with at least one person with me just for the safety factor. Getting older makes me consider the buddy system a good thing. In addition I really enjoy the company of the people I observe with and we are serious and do our observing and then talk when we take a break.

There was a lengthy discussion of this very topic just a couple of weeks ago on the Deep Sky Forum here. I don't have much to add besides what I said there.

I definitely prefer observing alone, though observing with other people has its charms, too -- depending on the people.

I do both. I like to observe alone at the dark site so that I can make a list and plan in advance and slowly work my way thru that uninterrupted. And I can concentrate on messing with my gear with no distractions.

But I also like meeting up with the guys. I enjoy their company and the casual atmosphere. But chatting takes up a lot of time that I could spend observing.

My observing site is in my 20 acre yard. Cougars, bear, etc., are around. Rattlers are around, but rarely seen. I observe alone 99% of the time; welcoming it when a fellow CN'r comes to visit, and we can observe together. I love hearing the coyotes, owls, cattle in the far distance. This is music to observe by.

Agreed! On the edge of town where i live, with undeveloped fields all around nearby, i get overflown by barn-owls all the time. My dog loves them, too... in fact, i think *he* thinks THEY are what i'm scopin' for! Generally he'll spot them first, but if i see one i'll call it out to him, and he'll run around the yard like a nut, arfing at it. It's the highlight of *his* evening of stargazing with me.

We hear the coyotes singing in the night from our darksky observing site, and that's also very cool. Still, as was stated above, i feel a li'l more comfortable when partnered up... not sure how being all alone might factor into one's vulnerability with those rascals.

Many years ago i was out & about with my young boys- day trippin' around some local boonies, my eye set to find a secluded observing spot- one sequestered from view, headlights, etc. from which to scope the night skies. We noticed a few aircraft buzzing about... slightly unusual, but not unheard of; it's a gorgeous place to fly, away from crowded airspace. Then, on our drive back to town, we ended up behind a large white sedan- obviously an "unmarked" gubbermint car of some flavor.

Watching the news that nite cleared up the mystery of the aircraft & car... they'd found the body of a missing rape victim, dumped right out near where we'd been poking around, and would be continuing to search for additional victims.

This pretty well scuttled my plans for observing out there. Since then, it's at public sites that are "rangered", or else private land behind gates... *locked* ones. Unfortunately, it's just the way things are these days...

Part of the appeal of observing (to me) is that you can do it alone. However, where I have observed the risk of dangerous animals is small.

I love observing the moon, planets, and easy DSO from my suburban front yard, where I enthusiastically encourage all passersby to have a look. But when I have a list of dimmer DSO and a planned trip to darker skies, it's almost always alone. I do get a bit freaked by nearby deer-snorts and coyote howls, but I usually just speak loudly to the critters and they go away.

It doesn't help to have a zoologist buddy who studies (and informs me about) the coyote-wolf hybrids now turning up here in NE. But I'm still pretty convinced they're not interested in humans.

I am pretty much a lone wolf, observing can be a solitary, meditative experience, I like it that way. I also enjoy observing with a friend or two, it's a different experience. And get togethers are fun but again different.

Being in San Diego, my favorite local dark sky locations are all within a few miles the US-Mexico border in remote regions where all sorts of smuggling goes on. I have never had any sort of an incident, but it is always in back of my mind and a few times an Owl on a post or a falling branch has brought me back from the distance reaches of the universe to the earth, startling me. The adrenalin rush certainly helps keep me awake.

Realistically, it is a region where there is a lot smuggling but it is heavily patrolled, the inner cities should have it so good. The area is flooded with Border Patrol agents, helicopters with infrared detectors, cars and trucks, agents on ATVs looking for tracks on narrow paths.. I feel extra safe...

Jon

"These days" the violent crime rate is pretty low - you have to go back more than 40 years or so to find it significantly lower. I think folks watch/listen to too much "news", which is actually "bad news".

For instance, look at the FBI violent crime rate data:

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-...

Well, lets just say it varies by region... and i never have been one to watch much "news". The incident i referred to happened a long while back, and we local residents didn't need news coverage... we lived it.

In fact, the young man was finally captured, sentenced, & imprisoned a couple of hundred miles away. A few years later he escaped, and info led authorities back to his family's home here in town. Our skies were then suddenly filled with helicopters, and streets with "gubbermint" cars.

That'll possibly make an impression on a person.

Folks who have not experienced such too-close ugliness might have a different take on matters... bless them! No one should have to see that. News, or otherwise. So i'm careful when i'm out & vulnerable, and try not to assume anything in regards to safety. Not only do i have no great love for "news", i do not wish to MAKE any.

Mostly do it myself, go out into the middle of nowhere and set up. There's some spots not too far from our dark sight. Maybe one car a night down that road not related to the dark site. Except now, they've opened back up that gas well they drilled last year. Hopefully the lights will go out again soon, it's lit up like daylight out there right now. But, I do ocassionally attend a dark sky weekend, or if I go to the dark site and someone else is out there, then I don't mind the company.

Bad stuff happens, and that is really awful. However, it happend in "those days" as well as "these days". I hear the "these days" stuff a lot, so I guess I am somewhat sensitive to it, especially as I think "these days" are, by and large, the "best days"!

I used to live on a farm (so to speak), and did most of my observing alone out in the middle of a wheat field. On one occasion, just after harvest, I found out how slowly and steathily the bovine crowd could move. I remember the feeling of something breathing down my neck that wasn't there a few minutes earlier. I raised my head from the eyepiece and ran smack-dab into the lips of a huge Jersey cow. She jumped back (it's amazing how fast they can move), and let out a huge, "Mooooooooooo". Needless to say, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I probably lost a couple of years off the end of my life, but gained a memory that I will carry to my grave.

As for now, I'm fortunate enough to have decent skies just off of my back porch in a small suburban neighborhood. Most of my neighbors seem to be concerned with the high cost of electricity, so they pretty much leave the outdoor lights off and rely on illumination from nearby street lights (from which I am shielded). There are quite a few dogs in the neighborhood, so it would be almost impossible for someone or something that doesn't belong to sneak in here.

So, to answer your question, I almost always observe alone.

Great story! I observe with cows, but they are (usually) on the other side of an electric fence. They seem to be very curious creatures, and seem to enjoy standing there and watching me observe. I have never seen them look up.

I prefer to either have my son with me, as he is interested, or all by myself if he is busy. I love the outdoors. I lived in the mountains for 10 years, so it doesn't scare me. I have a couple nice dark spots. Pitch my tent, set up my stuff and observe 'til I can't stay awake. Then get up early to see the pre-dawn show too. I'm loving this!! I purchased a 10" Orion SkyQuest last night. Can't wait for it to show up.

Most the time I observe by myself, but I prefer observing with others.

The only time I got scared was in yellostone knowing bears were nearby, and at my favorite site when cyotes apparently attacked something and the shreaks, growling, attacking noises was really scary since I was lying down with my binoculars looking up - well I did jump up and ran to my car. After 15min got out, but observed standing up.

Great thread.

I always go by myself. When it is warmer, i may take my maltese. She isnt much of a threat and may be more bait for all the owls flying over head. I go to a state park/civil war battlefield. Some traffic but not bad. I only have to drive 40 miles to hit dark areas. If all the stars align (pun intended) and the moon is new, I am not on call, no clouds then I may head down to darker areas.

I biggest concern is setting up near a meth lab and drawing attention from them.

I always observe alone on my rural 40 acres, and i'm not protected by an observatory - i'm right out in the open with everything. Still in all, i feel quite safe despite the Cougar, Black Bears, Wolves etc that are in the area. Only 2 animals have ever 'intentionally' approached me in over a decade of observing: a feral cat, and the neighbor's dog. A Porcupine ambled about 10' away from me one night, and then a Skunk did the same thing a few weeks later - that's when i decided it was time to put up a few rolls of 3' high wire garden fencing around me. It definitely won't stop a predator, but it does a good job of keeping the little creatures from getting underfoot.

The nightsounds are phenomenal out in the country. There are Fox barks, Wolf howls and Owl hoots as well as the seasonal sounds of Whip-Poor-Wills, Woodcock, Spring Peepers and Crickets. There's a herd of Horses in the field across the road, and they whinny and snicker to one another - sometimes the whole herd decides to have a run, and it sounds like thunder. A low-flying Loon cruised about 15' directly over me at 1:00AM a number of years ago, and its vocalizations were picked up by the voice-activated recorder i use for field notes - cool. Last Autumn, a pack of Coyotes (about 50' away) started to yip-yip-yip SO loudly that they couldn't hear my ear-shattering whistle - i had to blast the horn on the truck to get their attention.

The only time animal activity ever made me pack up and go home was many years ago when the sound of a Bear's 'huffing' (very different from a Deer snort) kept getting closer and closer. The next morning i found out that someone accidentally hit a Bear less than a mile away. Good thing i decided to leave - there's no telling what an injured animal might do.

I've only had one experience that could be considered a 'close encounter'. About 7 years ago, i was sitting quietly (too quietly) for about 15 minutes, trying to split a close double star. Usually there's a few moments of better seeing now and again, but apparently it wasn't going to happen that night. So i removed the small 5mm ep and plopped the large 32mm ep into the diagonal.
A quick snarlygrowl exploded about 30' to the west, and i thought it was the Badger i'd seen earlier that day. I clapped my hands and yelled for about 10 seconds to scare it away, and then continued the session. The next day my friend (local PD dispatcher) called to tell me that about 3 hours before i heard the snarlygrowl, a Cougar was sighted less than 500' from my observing site. Neighbors who were born and raised here (i'm from Chicago) told me not to worry about it - Cougar sightings always increase during that time of year because the mamas have hungry kits to feed. My forest has plenty of Rabbits, and the predators are welcome to all they can eat. I just have to be intentionally noisy so they're aware of my presence.

Two weekends ago my closest darksite was unoccupied (went on a Sunday - otherwise there's usually a few people). I'd done that before on a night with some moon, but not the other night. Nice and black, lots of coyote yipping and owl hooting, but not a big deal.

Then I put my iPod on.

The second I did, the hairs on the back of my neck went up. Never realized how much I use my ears to keep track of what's safe and what's not. With the earbuds on, I felt like someone/thing was creeping up on me from behind. Without, I was good. Weird. Obviously, I left them off the rest of the night.

Oh, and I set-up at a trailhead parking site, and before sundown a group of 20-something guys came with their sports cars and practiced drift driving on the lot. Dinner AND a show! Nice kids, no problems, and no one ran me or the scope over.

I always meet someone interesting at that place.

Well, with telescopes we view the past, why not view from a place we all end up at in the future???? They're also very quiet, and dark (ever seen a well-lit graveyard?)

I would say 90% of the time I am mostly alone in the backyard, well unless you count my dog. Tesla likes to curl up next to the mount. I am only about 10 minutes from my club's dark site and I bring the dog with me during the day, but I have been worried about bring her at night. So far I have left her at home and just go to the dark site when there are groups. I would like to take her up there and go when there is no one else out there, but I fear she might take off after some wild life. We have had issues with tweekers in the past at our dark site.

I observe alone on my 15 acres of bush in northern Saskatchewan. There are bears, moose, elk, eagles, etc. Last August when I was there many gunshots were fired on the other side of the river. Guess someone was getting an early start on hunting season? Or maybe they thought my dob was a cannon - it's a little red of neck round there.

I have a cemetery right behind my house. I usually don't observe IN it, but occasionally I'll take a walk back through it to get a view to the south away from the perpetually lit parking lot of the church off to the west.
As for guns, I have them and enjoy shooting, (my favorite is the 1911 .45,) but one can only use them when his life is in danger, which is highly unlikely in this part of rural Iowa. In the outside chance I might be seriously bothered by meth types or just punks out at one of my dark sky sites, I do have a sort of collapsible club that helps me relax.

There was one time I was really sure there was someone out there... We had the motorhome at our secret spot, it was less than 10 miles from the US Mexico border right on a smuggling route that bypassed the normal check points.

About midnight I heard what sounded like someone taking careful steps every 15 seconds or so through the surrounding brush. I was quite fearful. Went inside, woke up my wife, to her what was going on. Got a big flashlight and went outside to look.

I couldn't see anything, just the sound.

After a couple of minutes, I just caught a glimpse of a large owl flying away...

I guess I feel best when observing alone even when I didn't have my own observatory. The only real exception to this is when my oldest son visits, He's the only one in the family that has ever shown any interest in the hobby, so someday all my astronomy gear will be his. He's a single Dad, and that means between gymnastics, girl scouts and school activities he gets to spend far less time with me although we do get a few nights observing each year. Dark site have always been a lone thing for me and I only had two times when I got a little nervous 1st time, sun was setting I had set my equipment up and was relaxing on the tail gate of the old truck when I heard a heavy grunt a cow moose was standing no more than 50' from my spot. Moose are common around here so we know the signs of one that's maybe upset at you being there. She seemed calm and soon went back into the woods .The only bad thing was I was on the tail gate of the truck and the camera was on the floor in the cab. 2nd time was the same location and all of a sudden a group of leather clad bikers showed up. They were off to the side of the clearing when one of the bikers said hey that guy's got a real telescope over there!!! Quick I thought (what would John Dobson do)WWJDD. Soon most of the group were looking me and the scope over so I asked "Does anyone want to look at the moon?" Worked like a charm in just a few minutes they were on their way (I guess they had to be in before the streetlights came on) unlike us astronomers.

I love my observing buddies. So much so that once or twice a year I plan a big observing trip with them. You can read about our last two big trips here on CN.

http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=2673

http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=2804

Now as much fun as it is to share an observing adventure with like-minded individuals, for me my best observing is done solo. I have no qualms about heading off into the wilds alone for multiple nights of observing, and I observe a lot (a couple times a week, weather permitting) from my new home site, also solo.

I enjoy both, but if I could do only one or the other, my pick would be long solo trips to off the grid very dark sky sites.

I've encountered meth tweakers, bears, wolves, mountain lions, scorpions, rattle snakes and drug traffickers at remote observing sites in various locations. I haven't been killed or eaten yet.

Regards,

Jim

This brings up a curious angle on the matter; is it possible to be eaten, yet not killed? Perhaps this is an IRS question?

Our li'l group's darksky site, in the dry-grass + oak hills of central-coastal CA, has none of Jim's larger beasts... more the crawling variety. I s'pose that wouldn't include tweekers, tho i could be mistaken on that.

When asked by the squeamish about rattlesnake concerns, we tell them "no worries, the tarantulas scared them off long ago."

Setting aside issues of safety, my best observing memories are from a cross country trip with a 10 inch Dob. There is something about the solitude, under a dark sky, with the silhouette of mountains in the distance. Just you, the sounds of coyotes and 10's to millions of light years of distance. There is a magic to that, that nothing else quite reproduces.

I prefer "alone" and remote, yet since the site is astronomer friendly, sometimes have "company" (and perhaps a few "locals" during hunting season.) Nothing like a week alone under the night sky, no internet, cell phone (don't have one anyway), lights, "city noise", etc..Read, work on AP during the day, view, AP during the night....I Love the Night<<a song title for those who know<<same group/band also has a song titled: Astronomy<< no cheating (ie; looking it up on the internet.)

The worst part is when you are fully preoccupied with observation. I once was alone on the hills and have been at the eyepiece for few minutes but when I took by eye off the eyepiece there was a Raccoon few feet away from me just staring at me and probably wondering what the heck I was doing in its backyard. It startled me to death.

Workshop Lyrics:

By Silverfish Imperetrix whose incorrupted eye Sees through the charms of doctors and their wives By Salamander, Drake, and the power that was undine Rise to claim Saturn, ring and sky
By those who see with their eyes close They know me by my black telescope
Your green tree mantle from which these things derive A lens of quartz and refract spoke That crystal lens whose crystal rope Once bound me to those doctors and wives
When my vision was oh, so cloudy And I saw things through two eyes
I am a sailor on the raging depths And I know a thing or two Back to the corner mates and over the side Yes, I know a thing or two
By Silverfish Imperetrix whose incorrupted eye Sees through the charms of doctors and their wives By Salamander, Drake, and the power that was undine Rise to claim Saturn, ring and sky
By those who see with their eyes closed You'll know me by my black telescope
Before my great conversion when the ridge was closed Before my visit to the workshop of telescopes
By Silverfish Imperetrix whose incorrupted eye Sees through the charms of doctors and their wives By Salamander, Drake, and the power that was undine Rise to claim Saturn, ring and sky
By those who see with their eyes closed You'll know me by my black telescope

Astronomy Lyrics:

Clock strikes twelve and moon drops burst Out at you from their hiding place Like acid and oil on a madman's face His reason tends to fly away
Like lesser birds on the four winds Like silver scrapes in May And now the sand's become a crust Most of you have gone away
Come Susie dear, let's take a walk Just out there upon the beach I know you'll soon be married And you want to know where winds come from
Well, it's never said at all On the map that Carrie reads Behind the clock back there you know At the Four Winds Bar
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Four winds at the Four Winds Bar Two doors [Incomprehensible] and windows barred One door to let to take you in The other one just mirrors it
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hellish glare and inference The other one's a duplicate The Queenly flux, eternal light Or the light that never warms
Yes the light that never, never warms Or the light that never, never warms Never warms, never warms
The clock strikes twelve and moon drops burst Out at you from their hiding place Miss Carrie nurse and Susie dear Would find themselves at Four Winds Bar
It's the nexus of the crisis And the origin of storms Just the place to hopelessly Encounter time and then came me
Hey, hey, hey, hey Hey, hey, hey, hey
Call me Desdinova, eternal light These gravely digs of mine Will surely prove a sight And don't forget my dog, fixed and consequent
Astronomy, a star Astronomy, a star Astronomy, a star Astronomy, a star

I Love the Night Lyrics:

That night her kiss told me it was over I walked out late into the dark The misty gloom seemed to soak up my sorrow And further I went on I felt a spreadin' calm
Then suddenly my eyes were bathed in light And the lovely lady in white was by my side She said, "Like me I see you’re walking alone Won’t you please stay?" I couldn't look away
She said, "I love the night The day is okay and the sun can be fun But I live to see those rays slip away"
"I love the night There’s so much that I can show and give to you If you will welcome me tonight"
"If only you had been there, my dear We could have shared this together"
No mortal was meant to know such wonder One look in the mirror told me so Come darkness, I’ll see her again Yes, I’m gonna go ’cause now I know
I love the night The day is okay and the sun can be fun But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night I love the night I love the night

The worst part is when you are fully preoccupied with observation. I once was alone on the hills and have been at the eyepiece for few minutes but when I took by eye off the eyepiece there was a Raccoon few feet away from me just staring at me and probably wondering what the heck I was doing in its backyard. It startled me to death.
Jason

The same thing happened to me. But in a suburban white zone backyard.

I'm out observing by the garage with a hood over my head. Suddenly I have the feeling I'm not alone. I flip back the hood and there I see the neighborhood raccoon not three feet from me. He was probably annoyed that I was blocking his path to the garbage cans.

Anyway, knowing their reputation for nastiness(and rabies!), I yelled at him as loud as I could. At the same instant he hissed at me...

...and we both ran off in opposite directions!

"Wild" animules who are a bit too familiar with people, like 'coons f'rinstance, are probably more of a danger in the our neighborhood than the truly wild ones one might encounter in the boondocks.

Oh knock it off, you're making me anxious to get back out under the night sky (not in the city).

I would just like to add that I hate racoons, and they might be the only thing in the world that I hate. Always freak me out during my camping trips.

I observe alone... from my backyard

Honestly, I don't go out to dark sky locations. It'd be nice... but I don't want to pack up all the gear and drive.

Didn't see mentioned what your sky's "darkness" was- mag __?
Figured it must be pretty decent, if you're doing A/P...

I am lucky in that there is a state park with a hilltop picnic area that astronomers are allowed to use at night, for the usual $5 day-use fee, of course! They even have red lighting in the restrooms. I usually head up there alone, but if it's a decent night near the New Moon but you can usually count on a couple others up being up there too. Sometimes I'm alone at several of the other more remote and rustic sites, but with all the solo backpacking I've done, I know there aren't too many animals that I should fear in the night. I do have a CCW, and my 9mm is usually on my person when I'm not headed to the state park, but that is for the sketchy methheads you run across at strange hours in rural places. I have had some very enjoyable observing experiences with the guys I have met up at the park, but I also very much enjoy my solitude with the Cosmos too.

So if someone lists a 9mm in their sig, it could be a lot different than the 9mm in mine (ES100)?

Seriously though, I go observing with my observing buddy unless I am in my backyard or doing outreach. One day when I get my other 9 milli I can go out by myself

Observing from my front yard at 1AM, I noticed three teenage/20-something young men (maybe slightly stoned or tipsy) approaching along the street, all much bigger than me.

But it was I who scared them when they noticed me. I immediately asked "Hey, you guys want to see something cool?" (I happened to be viewing Saturn, which maybe the single best object, especially for new observers.)

After looking, they said "Dude - that's baller." They were psyched, so I think "baller" means good.

I'm pretty comfortable with people, and I'm confident that almost everyone wants "to see something cool."

That 9mm ES 100 could really hurt someone if you hit them with it.......it really is a dangerous weapon (in more ways then one).
