What is a White Zone?
      #5754660 - 03/24/13 06:18 PM

I see some observers mention being in an observation white zone, or grey zone. What does this mean?

Hi Brian, read this S&T article (scroll down to see the definitions of the different colored zones): link.

Chicagoland is a white zone. You can drive without headlights at night and unfortunately is all too often done.

Keep in mind the scale just stops at white, at least as far as I know. If you look at that map, you'll see plenty of relatively small metro areas, at least when compared to something like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc, that are white zones. Viewing from a white location in one of those smaller areas will be significantly better than in the middle of a huge city.

This refers to the degree of light pollution affecting the area from where you are observing. A black zone site is free of any manmade light pollution at all, and very few land areas meet this rating. A white zone is the center of an metropolitan urban area lit up to the point where only the moon, bright planets and the brightest stars can be seen with the unaided eye. The colors in between represent everything in between. Generally speaking, a green to gray zone site allows for very good views of galaxies and nebulae. Most people can reach such a site in an hour's drive from home. Yellow and orange zone sites are not as dark, whereas red and white zone sites are what you will find in a city or suburbs. This system of rating how dark a site is does not take into account passing cars or your neigbor's annoying security lights, local sources of glare can be blocked with light screens, fences or other means to screen out glare from nearby lights.

Ebyl,
This is one of the reasons I'm adding the ability to do Solar to my gear. LP is so bad, there is NO Milky Way, anything dimmer than a Mag 5-6 is totally washed out & can only be found using LP filters, M31, M42 NADA. I've got 19 New coachlight style streetlights between 150-500ft of my Obs. None of which are on the County's Approved SL list, & the SL design plan was installed without approval. The developers response "The streetlights are in & are working fine. I'm not changing something that works just to make a couple of cry babies happy." This was said to the County Street Light Engineer & Me. The fight goes on but the development hasn't stopped. My Obs was in place 6 yrs ago & I,, along with the rest of my town were assured we wouldn't even know the difference. Then they started BLASTING, 150ft from my well, for 3 months.

That's certainly how us urbanites see it. The white zone has the amenities of civilization; the black zone has the beauties of nature. The red zone tries for both and achieves neither.

But it is a practical compromise between affordable housing and access to jobs. My home town of Cambridge has more jobs than residents, but nobody would call it affordable. The black zone has essentially no jobs at all -- else it wouldn't remain free of light pollution.

A white zone is where you cheer when there is a major power outage and all your neighbors are reduced to using candles.

Well, I was just out for a couple of hours in the Toronto white zone. SQM 18.35. One purpose of my night was to measure the faintest star I could see near the zenith. I made a thread about it a moment ago here in General if you want the methodology. The skinny is that I could get to 12.6 with steady vision in my 6" Mak Newt and I caught a 12.9 star with averted vision.

For more perspective, I could not see M35 at all in my 50mm finder, little NGC 2158 the fainter open cluster beside M35 was completely invisible in the 6". The great M42 in Orion only showed the central part -the ' fishes mouth'. I tried for M1 and only got the barest hint of it with averted vision.
No filters, BTW....

Much can be accomplished in White zones with judicious choice of targets and some good filters.

Dave
