Age Poll of Astronomers
      #5845476 - 05/07/13 12:45 PM

Hi all, I am interested in seeing what the average or demographic of all of us are.
Myself for instance is 52.
How about you?
At the end of a few days take the total of all the ages and devide by how many individuals there are...
should be interesting!
thanks for participating.
Larry

Larry

A similar informal poll was conducted a few years ago on both Cloudy Nights and Astromart. I will try to dig up the results.

Since then, I have gotten older so I that I qualify as a senior citizen by all possible measures, I am 65.

Jon

28 here

For the moment, there are 56 answers.

As luck would have it, using the current results (rounded for those with decimals or Jupiter years) we have an average of just half a century, at 49.93.

Standard deviation is pretty big at 12.4 years. The attached graph shows that we might hope for a neat normal distribution if we increase the sample size. More respondents needed!

Also,I suddenly feel very young!

Cheers,

Yannick

Also attaching the Excel used so anyone can follow up. Column A has the data, with the last respondent taken into account being JayinUT. Adding new ages in column A will automatically update mean, stddev, and graph.

Cheers,

Yannick

Currently aged 35, been looking up since the age of about 7, first scope at 11, took a break from the hobby during college and early work years, got back into it over the past 5 or 6 years now that I have some spending money for gear.

Based in Ireland so not a lot of views - my gear investment gives a very poor cost per view return

Wow, I am just older than average, 52 years of age, but right in peak of the sample. Wonder why that is.

Was amateur astronomy more popular when we were starting out? That teen aged group appears smaller than it might have been 40 years ago. Maybe many of us picked up the hobby as we aged. In that case, a few of us were, well, a few doing the hobby back then.

Or is it just more of us middle aged folks are on CN arguing about everything? Is CN a representitive sample? Interesting...

Attached is graph, also with actual smoothed distribution vs ideal normal distribution.

Yes I do so wish that we had more younger astronomers. I consider myself one of the younger ones at 28, although we have a few younger as well. The data does include the sons and daughters mentioned in the posts.

Is it simply that there is a failure to fascinate the younger generation with space and with sciences? It could be linked to so many factors (the moon landings, etc.), but I bet some of them are deceitful advertising and light pollution. Imagine you're a teen, you get a telescopes with all those awesome images of galaxies and stuff (I'm looking at you, ETX 80). Then you point to M31, and you see a vague blob. If you are lucky. You have no real idea your eyes need to adapt to darkness, and anyway the light pollution is killing it. Not to mention you have never ever seen the Milky Way.

People aged around 50 these days may have started when light pollution was significantly less, and were getting much more exposure to the beauty of the heavens.

Also there is a problem that kids or even young adults with such a hobby are considered weird and nerdy. I remember an episode of the tween series Drake and Josh. Josh has a younger sister, who is very mean and somewhat nerdy (although liked by the audience) - and because of her nerdiness she gets what I think is a CPC 8 inch telescope for her birthday (I would have loved to get that myself ).

I myself, am considered a bit of a weirdo and eccentric at my workplace (mostly young adults in their early 30s) due to this hobby.

Then there are the toy telescopes - I walk around libraries here in Japan and see books for kids that include cheap plastic binoculars or short scopes with terrible aperture, for only the equivalent of 40 USD. Now think about the real binoculars 40 USD can buy you - but parents wouldn't get those, just the plastic ones in the books.

And then of course, it's not a cheap hobby...

it does not have to be expensive

naked eye is free

binoculars for <$100

8-10" dob and eps < $1000

but we do tend to get carried away

Beautiful work you were born to Poll.. LOL.
I think part of the disinterest is the Information age, the Hubbel Telescope and the Rover Voyager missionsetc. have taken a lot of the Mystery out of Science.
I can remember looking through my RV6 at mars in the 70's
and ....wondering.... Shining a Light at Andromeda and wondering if anyone would see it..
There is a lot of media coaxing youngsters from the Stars.
My Favorite current Show is The Big Bang Theory..
If you havent watched it.... You should.... Much better than 2&1/2 Men..

Definitely a Trekkie (all series), and also liked the Star Wars movies (never, EVER get these confused and crossed up!). I also enjoyed Babylon 5, and Isaac Asimov's Foundation series is excellent reading.

Between these and my Dad's stargazing through a home-made telescope as a boy, I really never had a chance of escaping this fate...

Thanks for the positive feedback on the results presentation, I'll try to keep it going.

At the moment we are at:
# respondents: 117
avg: 49
stddev: 13.3

I was hoping we would be getting away from a normal distribution to have a little bump in the tens and twenties, but no such luck - if anything we are getting closer to the normal distribution!

Cheers,

Yannick

Anyone under the age of 35 is most likely out observing, or otherwise having too good a time to bother with an age poll... or for posting on CN to begin with.

Might really skew the results...

Started my journey so long ago I don't remember exactly, but I do remember using my 4" Dynascope on comet Arend Roland ( ? ) about 1957 ? Lasted about 5 years until I got too busy with life at 15 or 16. Now I'm an an older newbie, just having returned with a purchase of an AD10 Nov. 2012 --- I'm 67.75 !

Just for kicks I took the data we have submitted so far and compared it with the general US population from the 2010 census bureau (table 1, http://www.census.gov/population/age/data/2010comp.html).

Interesting data!

If you do NOT ignore the <20 age group, you get this:

Age group General population CN'ers
<20 27.3% 1.7%
20-30 14.0% 5.0%
30-40 13.0% 15.0%
40-50 14.2% 25.0%
50-60 13.5% 28.3%
60-70 9.3% 22.5%
>70 8.7% 2.5%

But I think a better comparison, since we don't have data on the kids/grandkids involved here, would be to just ignore the <20 age group and bin the remaining data, which gives you this:

Age group General population CN'ers
20-30 19.3% 5.1%
30-40 17.9% 15.3%
40-50 19.5% 25.4%
50-60 18.6% 28.8%
60-70 12.8% 22.9%
>70 12.0% 2.5%

Someone made the comment that the younger and older ones are probably under-represented here (younger are busy with facebook/twitter/etc and older aren't internet savvy). This data at least doesn't rule-out that theory, since the tails of our distribution at both ends are lower than the general population.

Nice job with the data reduction. An engineer sees this, and feels compelled to plot it. So here's the first set, including the <20 years age bin. The next post will have a plot of your second table, without <20.

50.5

My mother encouraged us to simply lie on a blanket at night and look up at the skies from my earliest memories. She knew nothing of the constellations and stars -- it's just a beautiful, inspiring experience.

Got a Criterion RV-6 when I put up $100 earned from cutting lawns and my Dad put up the rest in the mid 70's. In my teenage years things waned quite a bit and returned in earnest about 12 years ago.

I, too, am a big Star Trek fan, enjoying the Original with Kirk and ST/NG with Picard. Actually think I prefer ST/NG of the two, but like both. I remember vividly watching David Scott dropping the feather and hammer simultaneously in the summer of 1971, proving Galileo's theory about falling bodies and gravitational fields. I have two young daughters who my wife makes sure are in bed soon after sunset, but hopefully someday, when they're older and perhaps on a camping trip, I too, can spread out a blanket and have them just enjoy looking up. Of course, I'll probably have a scope to show them things, too, but must remember to keep it simple, peaceful, and inspirational -- perhaps the most important part when they're so young.

Happy Mother's Day!

I think it would be more informative to create a poll with ages in 5-year bins and let people answer that way. I think you'll find a bimodal distribution, with peaks in the early teens and mid 50's, but that's just a guess. I'm 57.

We met again at a fairly large party about 20 years later and had a short astro discussion. He was out of astronomy by then, but I was hopelessly hooked. He was surprised I stayed with it.

In those nights back in the 60's he was really more focused on my older sister anyway, so he was being especially nice to me back then.

When I was about 20, a friend got me to help his little brother with a new telescope. He stayed hooked, and went on to work as an engineer in radio astronomy at the NRAO (Green Bank and Arecibo) and now at ARO in Arizona.

Happy birthday to all the posters who recently had or soon will have their birthday!

The latest data is as follows:
# respondents: 157
average: 49.1
standard deviation: 13.6

Amazing how the average and deviation have stayed basically unchanged since the first respondents!

I'm 62.25 years old and received my first scope for my 50th birthday- a gift from my kids, who were tired of hearing me padding around on the deck watching the constellations. I started 28 years earlier with an old pair of Sears 7X35's and now I have a 16" lightbucket to enjoy the night skies with.

28 years young. Started when my parents bought me a department store 60mm Jason scope when I was 9 or 10.
Bought myself a Nexstar GPS complete with wedge and AP equipment as a graduation present from college, and got into grad school shortly after and sold it all.
Now here I am out of grad school and having my first house built and am now planning out the design and having approved, my 6x8 roll off observatory.

I'm 60 going on 14 and have been interested in the night sky all my life, but had to leave it on the back burner until 1998 - the year I turned 46. I actually started out looking for a good spotting scope to use while long-range nest watching (Eagles, Hawks and Osprey). Lucky for me the ETX 90RA turned up in a search list, so I got one and used it day and night. It's still used for nest-watching, and also for white light solar observing and it's my grab'n'go lunar scope. Those little Maks sure give nice views!

27 Years old.

First book I every remember with pictures was a book about the solar system. (around 5 or so)

Bought some 10x50 binos about 6 years ago, 8SE 2 years ago... and deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole from there.
My son loves it as well, says he wants to work for NASA.

I am 53 years old. I started out at age 9 when my parents bought me a Tasco 60mm refractor in 1969 because my intense interest in the space program. I can remember observing Jupiter, Venus, the Orion Nebula while I had that scope. I built my first scope at age 16 from parts my parents bought me for my 16th birthday. It was a 6" mirror, my Dad made me a mirror mount. An oil technician down the street made me an 8" OD tube from rolled stainless steel. I made a mount from piping and a draw tube focuser with a single vane stalk from Edmund scientific. Back then, Jaegers was still in business.

These have been the best 44 years of amateur astronomy in my life.

Well we are now at:
#respondents: 191
Average: 49.6
Deviation: 13.9

The curves are below. I like how the people in their twenties get a little bump in the graph - to me it signifies that maybe at 30-40-ish you're too busy dealing with family and kids, but at before 30 and after 50 you have more time. Dunno though

Currently 55 and counting. Started with a department store scope when my children and I (30s) were much younger. I got serious about it at 48. I am fortunate that my wife love to go on astronomy camping star parties. She actually understands how much the stuff costs.

We are thinking about buying a 2nd property in the next 3-5 years. We want something about 1 to 2 hours away and in a grey or black light pollution zone. It also needs to be near Sierra Nevada mountain hiking.

I'm turning 48 this summer.

When I was in high school, I spent a fair number of summer nights looking at the moon through a 60mm Meade refractor, fascinated by the view even though I only had the 2 garbage EPs that came with the telescope. I've been an Apollo Program junkie for as long as I can remember, but I didn't seriously take-up astronomy until I was 36...

54. Started observing at age 9. Watched all three seasons of Star Trek TOS in prime-time, religiously. Yelled at my little sisters to "SHUT UP AND GET AWAY FROM THE TV!" when Armstrong was descending the LEM ladder and Cronkite was wiping tears.

I miss those days.

I'm 49 here.

Started in the hobby in the early 1970's, received my first telescope (a Tasco 11TE5 that I still have) on Christmas 1976. Drifted out of the hobby (but still kept up on astronomical news) when I started college and got back into the hobby in a big way in 2008 after showing my wife Saturn (through that same Tasco). Bought an ETX80 the following year and my signature kinda tells the rest of the story....

Actually, it's bad on the ep front too! Complete sets of Sterling Plossls, ES82 (in 1.25), Orion Stratus, Paradigm, Baader HD's, etc plus many one off's!

I'm been planning on thinning the ep and scope herd, but it's hard as I can always think of a (very specific) situation where a particular scope or ep will work better than the others!

(And the herd is STILL growing...a couple days ago I ordered a C90 and this weekend will be picking up a C6).
