Wow, I am just older than average, 52 years of age, but right in peak of the sample. Wonder why that is.

Was amateur astronomy more popular when we were starting out? That teen aged group appears smaller than it might have been 40 years ago. Maybe many of us picked up the hobby as we aged. In that case, a few of us were, well, a few doing the hobby back then.

Or is it just more of us middle aged folks are on CN arguing about everything? Is CN a representitive sample? Interesting...

Somehow I'm 52.

I should double check, that can't be right.

Wife said I could have an Apertura AD12 for my birthday, so I did.

Some updated results:

Attached is graph, also with actual smoothed distribution vs ideal normal distribution.

Yes I do so wish that we had more younger astronomers. I consider myself one of the younger ones at 28, although we have a few younger as well. The data does include the sons and daughters mentioned in the posts.

Is it simply that there is a failure to fascinate the younger generation with space and with sciences? It could be linked to so many factors (the moon landings, etc.), but I bet some of them are deceitful advertising and light pollution. Imagine you're a teen, you get a telescopes with all those awesome images of galaxies and stuff (I'm looking at you, ETX 80). Then you point to M31, and you see a vague blob. If you are lucky. You have no real idea your eyes need to adapt to darkness, and anyway the light pollution is killing it. Not to mention you have never ever seen the Milky Way.

People aged around 50 these days may have started when light pollution was significantly less, and were getting much more exposure to the beauty of the heavens.

Also there is a problem that kids or even young adults with such a hobby are considered weird and nerdy. I remember an episode of the tween series Drake and Josh. Josh has a younger sister, who is very mean and somewhat nerdy (although liked by the audience) - and because of her nerdiness she gets what I think is a CPC 8 inch telescope for her birthday (I would have loved to get that myself ).

I myself, am considered a bit of a weirdo and eccentric at my workplace (mostly young adults in their early 30s) due to this hobby.

Then there are the toy telescopes - I walk around libraries here in Japan and see books for kids that include cheap plastic binoculars or short scopes with terrible aperture, for only the equivalent of 40 USD. Now think about the real binoculars 40 USD can buy you - but parents wouldn't get those, just the plastic ones in the books.

And then of course, it's not a cheap hobby...

Note that a complete plot of ages of everybody currently alive will not yield a symmetric bell-shaped curve, for a variety of reasons.

"it is not a cheap hobby"

it does not have to be expensive

naked eye is free

binoculars for <$100

8-10" dob and eps < $1000

but we do tend to get carried away

29. For the tenth time.

I have, on occasion, been accused of being twelve. You have to grow old, but you don't have to grow up...
